My heart broke for both of them the first time I saw it. I relate to both in some aspects. My mom passed away and sometimes I feel like I didn’t know her enough to grieve her as much as I do, even tho I was 19 when she passed. I also got frustrated with my step/half sibling(s) sometimes because sometimes they would talk about her with a better understanding than I had despite the fact they never really had a relationship with her. I was devastated that I was only able to come to certain realizations from people who didn’t really know her. And made me feel even more like I didn’t know her. The thought that you maybe never really knew someone who passed that you loved is infuriating and heartbreaking. And kinda like Steven I had to work through my own feelings about my mom while everyone else’s feelings about my mom were placed on me. And it’s hard to really know what’s real to me and what’s real for others. It’s such a confusing thing to go through on both sides.

One of my favorite little “clues” about how Greg and Amethyst use to be really close and spend a lot of time together is that Amethyst has Greg’s hair. We see in flashbacks that Amethyst use to have short hair and it isn’t until after Greg has been hanging out with the Crystal Gems for a while that she has her more recognizable long hair which looks exactly like young Greg’s hair.

Seriously, the kid is going through a lot and his whole family should just go to a therapist. So much emotional baggage they still carry around. I love this show for not being afraid to really address this stuff, and make them all into extremely believable three-dimensional characters, who don't always have the right answers, who are hurt and lash out, who are simply struggling to keep going, but still do it anyway.

I think one of the best things about this show is every horrible thing a characters does, you can be like "I understand but it's still wrong." Or at least almost every time. There was one thing involving connie later on where I was like "nah. You're being pretty stupid connie."

So many good episodes back-to-back~! X3 I love the Halloween episode and any one that focuses on Lars or Pearl, really. It's always fun in general to learn more about a character, what they might not be sharing or layers you might have missed from just assuming they're just one way, etc. And Pearl's relationship towards Rose was... not really sisters, but a bit more romantic--at least on Pearl's side.

I think instead of being a joke about "The Nanny", "Li'l Butler" is calling back to weird 1980s sitcoms like "Down to Earth", where a rich family's maid is really an angel-trainee who died in the 1920s, or "Small Wonder", where a family's daughter is really a robot, or "ALF", where a family's alien is a wisecracking puppet. It seems also like the "Li'l Butler" disappearances last time - when Greg and Amethyst would watch the show for days on end - were when Steven was already around. So they'd both be in mourning, talking refuge in mindless comedy, and probably it ended the same way back then: Greg realized he had to be there for his son instead of wasting time like this, and Amethyst took that personally and hurt Greg by assuming Rose's shape.
