I think Stevens reactions in these kinds of emotional episodes is underrated, he reacts exactly like how a child would, hes confused why pearl is even upset or why people around him are yelling and fighting but he wholeheartedly purely cares about all of them with that childlike innocence like that ‘did I do something wrong?’ hits so hard

One important detail is Pearl saying the war was over 5,000 years ago. She was by Rose's for thousands of years. Even though Rose has been gone for over a decade, for gems that have lived for thousands of years that probably feels like just a few weeks/months (if even that).

Yeah, this is one of the best episodes of Season 1. I really like how the second half of the season starts to get deeper and more, idk, real? More human? I think it takes a lot of guts for any show to portray its main characters in such an unflattering light as we saw with Pearl here and with Amethyst in "Maximum Capacity". It's upsetting. But it's also almost comforting in a way to see the human condition reflected so honestly in these cartoon characters. It's an acknowledgement of the imperfections and issues every person has, even the "good guys". And it is an invitation to empathize with people who are struggling with those issues because we understand that good people can make mistakes too. SU really was radical in a lot of ways, including its viewpoint on imperfect people. But of course, if every pork chop were perfect, we wouldn't have hot dogs. I liked how that last bit of the episode with Steven and Pearl riding on Lion has Pearl quickly glance down at Steven and then ahead again. It's a brief moment but it conveys so much. That's honestly one of SU's great strengths in general imo, that so much of what it says is never said out loud. The show manages to pack so much meaning into expressions and gestures. Like the face Pearl makes as Steven is jumping over to her platform. Or the faces Steven makes right before he hugs Pearl and says that he thinks she's great. There's just so much you can read into these moments and I like that we are meant to actually put some thought into what we're seeing and that everything isn't just spoon-fed to us. It really elevates the show into something artistic where we create our own meaning for what we're seeing. As a fun sidenote, Rebecca Sugar would reveal years after this episode aired that the little speech we see Pearl give while holding the flag at the end of the episode has actual dialogue to it. She says, "...and out of nowhere, when it seemed impossible, Rose charged in with me by her side!" And of course the lipsyncing matches up perfectly. What a special show.

I like the pearl trauma dump, although it sucks to see so many reactors misjudge pearl cry for help, i think the reason why she accidentally shouted at Steven was because she felt gaslighted. That’s how someone would act if someone if someone tried to down play someone’s hurt. So yes it seems selfish but she has her reasons

Garnet catches Rose’s portrait, keeps it from breaking, and holds it over her head for the whole scene. This reflects the weight of her responsibility as “the boss” now that Rose is gone.

This episode confirmed that there was a real rebellion, with deadly violence and the expectation of death for failure on the part of the Crystal Gem rebels. No matter what, Steven will do his best to protect and support his family and friends. We saw that in The Trial when he chose the response that would help GAP rather than himself. When he managed to climb back up to the top of the floating rock, you could see that he was angry at Pearl, but he instantly became concerned and caring for her when he saw how upset she was. "Pearl, you have to tell me what's wrong"...I'm sure Rose Quartz had to ask this of Pearl many times.

Whats really heartbreaking to this episode is that the gems are very long lived, so to them Rose just died, so there's still a lot of hurt in evey gem, no matter how little or how big, this is the case for Pearl, she still feels those feelings for Rose and its still fresh because it's only been a few years for them

Thank you for your emotionally-intelligent reaction to this episode! This was wonderful. This was certainly a "Oh. OH! Oooooooh..." episode for me. I love the insight we're getting into the characters, this one and the Amethyst one. And obliquely into Rose's character. And as you pointed out in the Amethyst & Greg episode, Steven should NOT be put in this position. It's not healthy, especially for a growing kid. But he is, and he's killing it.
