I fix appliances and tvs in homes. I do up to 10 jobs a day and each one is totally different from the last. I see my boss every few weeks. Each job feels like solving a puzzle, or a crime drama to me. My van is a disaster area, but i can find the things i need. Sometimes there's an argument going on in the next room, and i need to put on headphones to not completely break down. They're in my pocket, but there's a tracker stuck to them for when i do lose them. It's important to find something your brain is perfectly suited for.

@gnocchidokey Same. I pick up my van in the morning, call all my clients, give them a 2 hr block. When i head out, i hit a button that texts my arrival time, some jobs take a few minutes, some take over an hour. You never get bored doing the same thing over and over this way. then i go home when there's no one left on the scheduler. There's only a few that need a certain time.

Before I even knew what adhd was or let alone that I had it, I realized I could not take in verbal instructions. my first few jobs were awful because I continuously asked the same questions which caused me anxiety, which made my performance even worse. Now I tell whomever is training me that I need to write everything down. I used to worry that they would think I was stupid for having to write everything down, now I can say I have adhd so I have to write everything down. I don't tell them this in the interview, but only after I am hired. Also, after a few days I tell them that it takes me a little longer to get things and that in two weeks they will be worried that I won't "get" the job, but that in a few months I will be one of the best employees they ever had as I am very conscientious (I also have autism and ocd, I make sure everything is done right). As absolutely hard as it is, I make sure to be on time because that is one less thing to cause me anxiety.

Just finished a residency and someone gave me “constructive criticism “ about my poor time management, despite the fact that I had completed everything on time/early except for some stupid self-evaluations which I had another week to do. She said I was unfixable and not even trying. Like, no, I’ve improved, but my priorities are not the same as yours. She literally said “completes things at the last minute” which is literally on time. I really wish I could be this honest when dealing with “feedback” like that.

Some managers just love to put people down, it makes them look better in their eyes. I've met many managers like this, it's not personal to you although it feels that way. It's a power trip.. Know in your mind that 'they' have a problem. Any good managers would focus on the positive and balance the feedback. This person is unprofessional and unkind. They probably fear someone else taking their job one day.

This is so accurate! And I love that you two share such videos for people like me who are now realizing why being in the workplace was so difficult! I remember when I finally landed a coffee shop job that I loved(I struggled to get hired!) And I did amazing at first like you mentioned then spiraled and struggled to the point where the assistant manager came to me gently and told me she really liked me but coworkers were complaining I was too flighty, wasn’t finishing tasks etc. and I started to bawl right there. I then did everything I could to do better, and they kept me for I believe 6 years til they were bought by a company that completely changed everything about the shop and I quit. 😆 I can’t tell you how many times I was let go by jobs who would all say the same thing”you are a hard worker and so great to be around, but you just don’t quite fit what we need.” And at that time I had no idea that adhd was probably why I was struggling! It took having a boy who clearly has adhd for me to look into it and realize.. he is also me! Good luck my fellow adhd’ers out there! You got this!

Felt this. My experiences have been very similar. And honestly, my most recent job (I'm no longer there) was part of the reason I started to wonder why (no matter how hard I tried) I wasn't able to organize, meet deadlines, and just perform at the same level as my coworkers. It got to the point where my family lovingly tried to convince me I was normal and fine, and I said "Either something is WRONG or I'm just plain stupid...and I DON'T want to believe that I'm stupid." All of this played a part in my diagnosis.

Mate just do any trade. Everyone in the building industry is adhd . Nobody cares when you turn up or leave. Nobody cares how you act. They just pay you by the square metre. You do as many square meters as you need fun tockens that week. I've tried other things it's all completely intolerable. In the building industry you could turn up at 10 , drunk and stoned , punch someone on the face , leave at 2 . Come back the next day and they ask what's your measure for last week?. Theres a snag in plot 6 . Put that right and il pay you for plot 6 . Heard you punched dave in the face. Lol

And if someone stands speaking loudly outside your office you’re likely to either go to the door & let out a primal scream or just walk out with the intent of never returning. Don’t stop yourself talking with your hands, just let them do what they want. I move my hands loads when I talk, sometimes I move my hand to my to my words like I have a sock puppet on my hand! and I learnt from a speech and language therapist, not one I was seeing, just one I was having a conversation with, that it helps you process your thoughts, something about the movement helps - I was self conscious of it so would try and stop it and it would affect my ability to get my words out, once I understood this I just let my hands go for it, and as far as I’m aware nobody has judge me for it. What I am saying is take your hands off your worry list, let them do whatever they do and good luck with your interview.

I have gotten hired for so many jobs and the bosses are all impressed with the results I churn out. What they never see is the internal screaming everyday because the lights are too bright, the noise is too loud, or alternatively I am bored and KNOW I should make work to keep busy but starting a project? Nah fam impossible. The multiple bathroom trips to play on my phone just to keep my brain going. The snuck in music on headphones time. The sitting on the floor in the bathroom stall covering my eyes just to get some quiet and dark. The desire to quit after 3 months. 🙂 The last minute mad dash to complete tasks because I sat on it for hours just not wanting to do it but knowing I must for a paycheck. Longest I've ever held a job down was 2 and a half years I wish that was a joke. Only been fired twice, let go a month early after I gave notice, quit all the others. Every single tax year for the last...9 years? 🤔 I have had between 2 and 4 (record was 5), w-2's at year end to file. Sometimes from holding multiple jobs at once, other times just job hopped. 😅

So I've gone at this with an open mind..and therefore I needed to Thank you for teaching me that I was taught wrong, thank you for teaching me I'm ok. Thank you for this book I may just finish! (One of a handful of books that can hold that title)

I dont work due to having autism, currently going to be assessed for adhd , starting tomorrow, through the NHS. Also have short term memory issues and dyscalculia. I would never know what to say during interviews. Big part of that is is because i haven't beem able to hold down a job since 2004, but way back in the mid 2000's i had no idea about any of this. Its only since i was diagnosed with autism two years ago that ive realised that the complexities of living with these health issues has been the reason why i cant hold a job down. I always hated telling people all of the above in fear that i will be gaslighted or judged in some way but ive got to the stage that i just dont gove a shit what others think.

I'm not diagnosed yet (still working through therapy and evaluations, only have generalized anxiety and unspecified depression confirmed so far, which were not surprising to find out). That said, this is generally how I handled work throughout school and precisely why I've procrastinated on job hunting. With each new video I feel more and more convinced that I've had ADHD this whole time... I know self-diagnosis is very controversial, but I diagnosed myself with depression and anxiety before it was confirmed and was right. I'll never say anything's confirmed until it is, but I think more people know what's up within themselves that some people think... 😅

If it doesn't turn out to be ADHD, check out info on C-PTSD. I also have symptoms of ADHD, but diagnosed with generalized anxiety, and now CEN (Childhood Emotional Neglect) They're starting to find out that emotional neglect , which doesn't look like trauma, doesn't have to be about violence or physical neglect - changes the brain in ways similar to those born with ADHD brains! ( And parents can be loving but not know how to teach us about our emotions if they never learned themselves!)

Same here. In my late 40s and realizing no one wants an older employee, especially with no experience (jobs I had before don't count for anything as I needed no skills and were long enough ago that they're not allowed on resumes (only last 5 years are allowed). Bachelor's Degree and an Associate's Degree (separate things in related, but separate fields) without experience doesn't get you anything. My parents have given up on me as a total loser, and thanks to physical problems I can't go flip burgers or build sandwiches or even babysit (not even qualified for those jobs anymore as they require prior and very recent experience).

A training "data management for beginners" might help with the "clean desk policy" because with this, you learn how to create folder structures (which make sense for your tasks) on your computer, among other things. And then, you can just keep the desk clean and put it all into your computer. Please be aware I have no diagnosis so please feel free to discuss this suggestion and / or try it out at your own risk. Worked for me, though, to deal with the clean desk policy.

Interesting how even among people with ADHD this stuff can differ. My Workplace is extremely tidy, My home desk is not thou. Also I'm still performing my job even after 3 years in it with extreme care and high quality. I still am highly motivated to do a good job because my employer values frequent praise. If you have done something well they tell you so. My Clients also have nothing but praise for me and if I went somewhere, I usually get requested BY NAME. My Team lead once asked me half jokingly if "I couldn't dial down my work performance a bit every once in a while. Every Client requests me and they only have me once, so it causes slight problems with the schedules." XDDDD I have a little bit of say in how my contracts are scheduled, but I don't have the final one, still I get called by former Clients to get an Appointment with me. xD

My workplace is always clean and tidy. If not I can't focus. I think my autism helps with this. There was never a fitting job for me, so I am a freelancer since a few years. No collegagues, no meetings, no phone calls and I can work whenever I feel good.

ive had like 8 different jobs and im only 29 hahahaha from coaching college teaching to animal rescue to dog boarding kennel to labourer to 3 different hospitality jobs and now ive been coping decently for 3 years being a self employed cleaner to pay for life. i also feel like the best employee there in the first week then when the criticism comes in i then feel like a waste of space and quit out of shame. working towards being a professional trance producer and touring dj though been the dream since i was 13, getting a track signed to a major label soon. Even this wouldnt haven been possible without a mentor who believes in me and keeps me grounded (adam ellis- youll know him Rox). I literally cannot function with a normal person job doing normal person hours it feels like a prison- actually a safe minimum security prison chilling in your cell is much more preferable.

I found out I was a good teacher, though my planning was really good, I never stuck to my lesson plans. The good thing a about teaching is you manage yourself, and are trusted to get on with it. I moved to the NHS where I became a trainer, which used less creativity but I worked hard with what I had to do. By 17 years was up I felt that if I hadn't had to retire for health reasons I would end up getting sacked. But oh I miss my job.
