I feel like matched combat should have been a thing from the start. The Illiad is filled with formation battles as well as matched combat all the time. I get that it's mostly against heroes but the Trojan war was an event where new Heroes made a name for themselves.

Honestly, matched animations is a least thing i thought about when played Troy. That's how good this game for me. But a very welcome addition, and looks very organic for this type of game. Nice!

Love how a mod once more has fixed a game issue that's been in Total War for so long. Limiting the number of duels keeps things working in terms of unit based combat, while still giving the chance for some stunning actual combat to break out. CA really should just employ the modders for post game updates at this point, they basically fix the entire franchise.

The key issue surrounding matched combat is that it hasn’t been further innovated and improved upon. Many of the problems that people criticize matched combat for could likely be fixed with time and more development. Higher quality animations of simple fatal slashing and stabbing blows can also mitigate the need for lengthy 1v1 duels. In general, the primary dilemma with matched combat is that CA hasn’t dedicated the time to properly improving the system.

If anything, matched combat works even better in this setting than other TW games. The traditional shield walls and staying in formation are more associated with classical and Hellenistic periods.

@@2009VandA yea, it's like saying the made Rome 2, though sold it 3 times with Attila and Britannia, with broken mechanics (in each part more broken than before) that only modders had done. Instead of fixing your own games that people had PAID for. Modders, are the only reason games like this survive, for the replayability. And even there, you had to put mods to see normal animations! The only game that could be clear vanilla to me was Shogun 2, with moves and animations never seen before, and the agents cinematics with general's speeches.

@@2009VandA What expensive work exactly? There is no new engine, no really new skins (some of them are three kingdoms), new textures are easy to make, they have teams. The monsters and the kill moves mostly from warhammer, the really expensive thing was naval battles up untill Shogun 2, then they took it the easy way but managed to make coastal battles, but never fixed the ai. Modders did LOTR, Medieval kingdoms, animations fixes, features, and many more, most of those people work alone and for free! How's that full budget company can't manage crucial things like animations???

@@Mikesman1000 I am talking in context of the specific mod in the video. The matched combat animations were in the game. Someone was payed to make them. All the mod does is make it so that rank and file units can use them. The mod is literally just flipping a switch.

I think Divide et Impera strikes a nice balance. There's a wide variety of kill moves but most of the actual combat animations are either short or just simple slash/thrust animations, which helps mitigate the issue of formations breaking.

i Really like the heros duelling each other like in Three Kingdom and also now in Troy. I hope we will see more in the future like that but it seems people like to go back where there were not those 1 hero unites anymore. But it is just so fun watching them fight and then finishes each other. Problem is often: I wished some stuff they have in newer games were in older games or vice versa. But that will propaply only be dreams and wishes. For example Warhammer does not have those sync fights with the heros but i guess that is due to the high amount of diffrent models and it would take too much time and money to do every hero unite have an animation fitting to the opponent.

I've always liked the mini duels that happened. Considering the time where people were more tribal at the time (more in culture then anything) makes sense that less tactical use of soldiers were used. I know the bronze age did utilize shield walls and such (not an expert on this Era so corrections are welcomed) but this was some time before that. Please correct me if I'm wrong on these things

Looks pretty cool. Tbh I never noticed how janky the stock animations were. I actually don't typically zoom in too far in battles, otherwise units tend to get wiped when I'm not looking. Lol. But I'll have to give this a try.

I‘ve an idea: Import the two handed matched combat animations from 3K into Troy, and import Shield+Sword/Shield+Spear animations from Troy into 3k.

Its just on Steam now, I am trying to release it on Epic for some time but its still stuck at approval list :/ Honestly, Epic is just such a crap place for mods and you can't even simply update existing mod without long waiting period. There are even no comments on Epic mods so you cant even get feedback from people there.

Man I tried so hard to get into Troy, especially with the myth units they added… I just couldn’t get into it, every fight was just swings and random deaths, people flying through crowds after being hit, even with the mods that attempt to maximize matched combat, it doesn’t do much for me. Decent graphics though 💁‍♂️
