I suggest that you leave your imports in superthrive+water for max 24 hours, trim the roots and then move them to perlite or moss for the rest of the acclimation. I think you’d have an easier time with it and the plants won’t have to got through developing water roots and then transitioning to a different medium 🙂

I do the same. The soil roots will keep rotting in water.

@@redlady3123yup! letting them soak up water is only to rehydrate them for a short while after shipping. I usually stick them in water for an hour or two, but I know that others like to leave them in water for up to a day-ish

The only time I had to deal with mealies was one of my first plants, an elephant foot, and I had absolutely no clue about plants AT ALL & I am not kidding, I thought the plant was blooming🤣🤣 still dying to this day thinking about it, I left the mealies on for weeks and they grew and grew until I realized they are bugs and freaked out😂

I imported from Greenspace this fall: a labisia had mealies, and I got a dischidia rattle skull that was full of ants! I wound up cutting off all the pods - I live in the southern US and the last thing I want to do is introduce invasive ants - and ultimately the plant wound up dying.

When I’m rooting in water and there seems to be no change in the roots, I find root pruning really helps to promote new root growth. Usually the roots die off anyway when coming from substrate to water, but sometimes they don’t and just stay mushy. Either way, they aren’t absorbing water so a root chop should work! ❤ Good luck! They aren’t too bad!

I've been battling my first thrips infestation for a couple months now, and every time I think I've gotten rid of them, I find a single adult thrip again and feel like I'm in a losing battle. I already ended up tossing, or taking cuttings from the initial infestation area (and isolated them of course), but I'm starting to feel discouraged. I've been using beneficial bugs and I've wanted to avoid hardcore pesticides if I can. My collection is so big just the idea of spraying the whole thing down multiple times a week is so overwhelming. I finally put systemic granules on the plants I saved in the area of the initial infestation, but I just can't repot EVERYTHING. After finding a thrip yesterday on a completely different plant that's getting closer to some of my more treasured "rare" plants that I'm proud of, just feeling defeated.

@hexaitine
@hexaitine 5 ай бұрын
Hey! If the whole nine yards of repotting is an issue, it seems fairly common to just sprinkle the granules on top of the soil and mix them in a little bit. I sprinkle the amount it says to use and then use a skewer to move the soil around at the very top until I can't see the granules anymore, which only takes like a minute or two. I'd really like to move away from granules and onto beneficials myself, but for now it's what I've got. Hang in there!

This video may be the reason my Caramel marble doesn't die. I cut it into three pieces a while ago and since then almost all the roots have rotted off and out of the three cuttings there's only one leaf left. I keep panicking and moving it to different subrates because I don't see roots growing but seeing only two imports have the start of roots after two weeks and hearing you contemplate if you're being impatient made me realize I'm being SUPER impatient! So it's in a good set up now and unless it rots I don't plant to move it at all until it roots

This might be just my conditions but what I’ve learned with my plants (pothos, monstera, peperomia, raphidaphora, ZZ, hoya, snakes and aglaonemas for reference). Is that when taking cuttings/ buying cuttings I will put them in water and it doesn’t matter if it’s a week after pushing out roots or 2 months (please don’t judge I wanted to try growing stuff only in water) they won’t really do much until I transfer them into soil. I had a raphidaphora cutting in water which I thought I was gonna lose (it grew only a root slowly from one of the two nodes I had, but no growth point was going for a month), as a last ditch resort I potted it hoping the wet/dry cycle might help and it did. A week after I potted it up I saw the new growth.

In my experience cuttings in high humidity seems like they don’t feel the need to push out roots. 😂 I noticed that two months ago on some cuttings I water propped, I put the ones with new growth coming in the humidity dome on a heat mat to help the leaves unfurl. After a few weeks they had no roots while the ones at room humidity were full of roots, they’ve since been removed from the dome and is now showing signs of roots.

Chiapense are so slow. I would just leave it as is. I moved my frosted heart cuttings all around and they died in moss. My second batch of rooted cuttings did okay in my cabinet under very high light, but it grew new roots in the top above the substrate, and I'm pretty sure the roots below the substrate are done. 🤷‍♀️ var. Chiapense are rough. If just leave it be, or move it into higher light with the same humidity. But that's just my story. 💚
