I've seen Dr. Lisle speak on this subject several times but this is hands down the most focussed and thorough expression of his ideas I've seen to date. Simply fabulous. For those who are unfamiliar with him but find this talk of interest or even fascinating, check out the podcast called Beat Your Genes (a treasure trove of brilliant and mind opening discussions with Dr. Lisle and Dr. Nate G). It's clear to me that I myself have been stuck in the Ego Trap for some time now. I'm so thankful to have found a pathway out. Time to set some goals I know I can achieve and get to work.

You asked at the end, what do I do that gives me self esteem? Every day I set little goals for myself. I also enjoy free time, but I set little goals. A sample day might look like the following. I get up and have a pile of vegetables for breakfast. I will enjoy the patio with all the trees or watch the morning news as I eat the vegetables. I will empty the dishwasher or some other "maintenance" house task. I will wash face, brush teeth and hair. I've been doing chef AJ routine but in I am in maintenance mode so my BMI stays at or under 25.0. I will set a goal to clear out a portion of a closet, or some other thing that I call a "special project" . Special projects are things that also tend to benefit mostly the house, but they tend to be for longer term benefit, as opposed to "maintenance " items that have to be done or they pile up quickly. Examples of maintenance activities are dishes, grocery, laundry, trash out, cooking, chopping vegetables/ food prep. Special projects might include taking dog to the vet for vaccine, going to the dentist, Doctor, reducing stuff that goes to Goodwill etc. Appointments are not difficult things but with driving time they take up so much time that I don't expect myself to do more special projects that same day. I separate these things in my mind just so I can balance/ do time management. After a bit of time on a special project I will take a break. I might read, watch KZbin or HGTV. I might take the dog to the park. On some days of the week I will exercise at the gym, outside, or do some Leslie Sansone or yoga from KZbin. I will take a break. I will fix dinner, which is trickier because the guys eat higher density calorie foods. In the evening I will mostly relax, but I likely will be folding he laundry, putting stuff away, taking, dog out, tidying the house, usually the kitchen., writing a grocery list or planning the next day. Nothing is done to perfection, but my self esteem feels better when I know I have done a mix of these things or at least spend a part of the day rolling the peanut forward. Sometimes I get knocked way off, like twice last month when I helped our almost-not-a-teen on a big project. Sometimes the husband wants me to run errands with him or take a day trip out of town. On top of this I have a job that has some very positive aspects ( muscles, tips, compliments, pay, social) but now I can see that they are not self esteem things, they are esteem things. Right now I am trying to figure out what I really want, retire since hubby did, or keep on going and get a little overwhelmed at times. I am trying to pick through all Doug Lisles videos so I can figure out what I want to do at this point in life. I have a BS, an RN and an LMT degree/ licenses. I am doing the LMT part time. It gives me esteem, mostly. So, do I want esteem and self esteem or am I DONE with the esteem thing, at least via work? Not sure.

I've been watching some videos of Dr. Lisle's talks and wonder if he addresses self forgiveness or how to overlook permanent "flaws" and knowing one cannot hope to ever compete in arenas and how to cope. I don't know if it's my internal audience saying this, to not bother, "what's the point?'. What happens when the live performance is never successful? I hope you understand somewhat my concerns. Did I misunderstand that the outcome is important for our happiness? I feel like I'm missing something in my understanding. Honestly, all this talk about competition makes me anxious.

Sounds similar to “Growth Mindset” in Positive Psychology. A great book about this from a personal viewpoint is “The War of Art”.
