I've been watching a lot of Derek's videos recently, and his creativity is really amazing. Truly he has music in his soul. I'm interested to know, though, he always seems so positive, but does he ever express things like sadness, anger and frustration? Does he ever get sick of the piano and just want to do something else? I hope it doesn't seem like an impertinent question, I'm just really interested to know more about what sort of person he is.

Actually it's often the other way around - He loves playing so much and gets so absorbed by it that sometimes we have to make sure he tells us when he is tired or hungry, or he'll just keep going! That said, Derek definitely does enjoy lots of things besides playing the piano. He enjoys movies, going to musicals, going out for food, going to the gym, being around all of the people he knows and who visit him. He enjoys just moving to music by himself when not playing it. He LOVES meeting new people and asking them questions. He's generally a very happy, kind and calm person. The interesting thing with Derek is that he often expresses his emotions through his music. So for example if something is bothering him he may change key often or use certain types of basslines, or maybe play some odd high notes out of context. It can be subtle, but Derek's playing can be very communicative and compensate for his difficulty with spoken language. The way you see him in our videos is the way he is: He just loves doing his thing and even moreso if someone else is enjoying it with him.

I've been playing and listening to music all of my life. I have never been interested in piano enough to have a favourite pianist until now. Would Derek be up for coming into our studio at the World Music Method and improvising over some Congolese, Hindustani and Cuban grooves with our tutors?
