I know Mike pronounces in In Cauda Venenum but Mike might pronounced it In Cauda Venenum. I'm not sure though because I hears Mike say it, but I didn't hear Mike say it. Also because Latin has been a dead language for a long time we don't actually know how the syllables would have been pronounced, we just have to assume based on modern phonics.
@harrycook9041
@harrycook9041 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheBlackKnight1o1 That's not quite right. We know how Latin is pronounced because contemporary writers told us how they pronounced them, Cicero said that what we would call "v" the upper class Romans who spoke Classical Latin pronounced as /w/. There is a degree of assumption but this is also very accurate because it is based on comparative linguistics, which is all about finding regular sound changes and is usually very accurate as a result. Mike is right, Venenum is pronounced /wenenum/ in Classical Latin.

That "dark, depressing shuffle" that is Banemannen (The Garroter) is one of my favorite things about this album. Opeth almost never fails to surprise me, with the way they constantly keep reinventing their sound! I fucking love this album. One of the best that new Opeth has to offer. Mikael is single-handedly keeping melody alive.

This is the first I hear of this dude making "critiques" of records... and to me he's making absolutely zero sense. Even displaces words in his sentences.... He sounds like a very obvious jealous musician trying to dissect the technique on the Mona Lisa of records. Some like Fantano occasionally make sense and give cristal clear explanations of why he likes or dislikes a record, even though I thoroughly hate Fantano.

I really liked Sorceress. I loved the shorter acoustic pieces and there were tons of bangers like Strnge Brew, Wilde Flowers, and the title track. I would agree that In Cauda Venenum is better. Opener was odd, but the rest absolutely rocked.

Sorceress is on the better half of Opeth’s discography for sure. I get why so many Opeth fans hate that album,but on it’s own it’s a pretty good album. Will o the Wisp is easily one of my favorite ballads and acoustic songs from them.

For me, Sorceress was hurt by the track order. If you change the order it flows better, more like the older albums. Try this: Persephone, Chrysalis, Wisp, Era, Slight Return, Sorceress, Sorceress 2, Flowers, Glance, Brew, Sojourn, Spring, Ward.

I think to appreciate it fully you have to get rid of all your expectations of what Opeth should be and shouldn’t be. The new style may not suit everyone but I think much of the dislikes just come from expectations. My favorite song is btw next of kin, so goddamn heavy and feels both opethy and unopethy at the same time, love it nevertheless.

I can see and respect the level of musicianship that is required to create such an album. That being said, almost nothing since and including Heritage clicked it for me. The past 4 Opeth album to me boil down to: "Eternal Rains Will Come" - definitely the best track they've made after the Watershed album. Then there's the beautiful, very Jethro-Tull-esque "Will O The Wisp" off the otherwise soulless Sorceress album. And last but not least, the title and opening track on Heritage is a beautifully crafted piano and contrabass intro. It's not only the growls I'm missing, it's the overall credible contrasts between sheer aggression/brutality and haunting melancholy/beauty, the elevating and almost classical compositions of tracks like Harlequin Forest, April Ethereal, Heir Apparent, The Drapery Falls and countless other pre-Heritage tracks. I see there's many new fans Opeth found with that style change. I couldn't be sadder to say, but they've lost me on the way. The new stuff I just cannot connect to, and trust me, I've tried over and over and over the past years for dear love of what this band has created previously.

longingbydesign your comment totally resonated with me. I've felt the same about Opeth since their change in style. It's not just the growls, it's the overall sound that is lacking. It's sad to see such an awesome talent go to waste.

I really like a couple of CD's before that, but I'm with the cats expressing disenchantment with the newest release. Oh well, obviously every member in that band is a gifted genius, so they dont need little old me to like it. I was not a fan of heritage when it came out but years later I found myself deep diving into it and started to really appreciate its beauty and creativity. I loved pale communion from day one. I agree with most others that sorceress is just not a good album. Its mixed terribly and the songs save for will o the wisp and the title track are just all over the place and there's nothing that particularly grabs me. With in cauda I was absolutely blown away from note one and aside from one or two tracks I think they're all up there with the best of opeth overall not just post heritage opeth.

Although I wouldn't criticize the musicalities of this album as much as you (for I really do find myself liking it a lot), your assessment of the mix being bad is actually a fact, based on several uploads I've analyzed. The issue you raised about the upper-bass/lower-mids can be easily/objectively seen on a spectral analyzer. Really bad/persistent resonances that are mainly around 110 & 230 Hz (along with some others around 618, 1.2k, 5.6k, & 11.5k). Also, I happened to notice the same skip (between a couple of adjoining tracks) on several uploads I've listened to, which I've verified is an actual defect multiple people are apparently experiencing, based on a forum I found.

imo it's not the best album of their post 2011 era. the amount of spoken word samples really hurt a lot of the songs imo. those would've worked better on an album of a funny band like limp bizkit or system of a down. but for a very majestic sounding band like opeth they felt very out of place. the album is still strong but I prefer the sorceress and pale communion... and now that I think of it I think I like heritage more than ICV. still this album isn't bad whatsoever

I liked Pale Communion the most out of the recent Opeth albums. And this new record didn't change that. Probably I will give few more listens, but as a coincidence I also had to stop at that piece same as Mike's, where I felt like continuing to listen next day.

I have pre-ordered the Nuclear Blast MailOrder box, so I'll have to compare the vinyl and CD. I don't normally get CDs, but *really* wanted the colored vinyl, so big box it is, so I will have them both to compare. If I notice anything striking, I'll come back and comment again.

@@harrycook9041 Fair enough, I didn't actually know that v in Ancient Latin was a w sound. I did some Latin in my first year of university but it was pretty straightforward. Interesting to know, I'll add it to my knowledge of Caesar being pronounced with a k sound instead of c. It was kind of mind altering that one.

I think these songs COULD be listened to on their own if you don't have expectations from a band you held an identity to. If you listen to this album not knowing who the artist was (not expecting anything), this album is amazing. Similar to when Genesis changed band members or whenever King Crimson released an album from 1969-1981, if a band wants to change their sound you have to adapt with them because that's what they may be from then on

I was actually very surprised about this review in many ways. :D First of all, I just realized, I have almost never listened to a standalone Opeth track, most of times I enjoy the full album. Very different to your approach apparently. The second thing I noticed, is that I really enjoy the way Opeth take their music to a new direction every album (especially since Heritage), which seems to be one of your main problems. As an example, 'The Garroter' (or 'Bannemannen', I actually prefer the Swedish version) is my favorite track on the album at the moment and I was really surprised by your primary reaction to it. It was great to hear a more critical opinion on this record, even though it might be my favorite Opeth record so far!

I loved it...I love how they always push the prog boundary to new heights and always shocked to see the dissatisfaction in thei fanbase who always complains cos their is a lack of catchy black metal bits and growling...cmon broaden the musical horizon and look at the quality, the sheer genius of teh compositions and having the balls to create new fresh sounds than just holding on to ''what works''...true prog should push the boundaries of compositions to new heights and introduce new sounds and ideas with mix of technical prowes, compositions and mind boggling arrangements and Opeth certainly is doing that with flying colors

Did you listen to the swedish version too? The vocalist said it's the better version cause we wasnt stressed and he recommends everyone to listen to it even if they don't know swedish. With that said. Do you think that would make a difference to you personally? I only had time to listen to one version and i chose the swedish one and really liked the vocals on it. I really liked the album but not gonna relisten much, because i've been stuck in a "heavy" phase for the past 3 years. But as always great musicianship from opeth.

I thought overall that the album felt MUCH more dynamic than the previous three, and the guitar tone was heavy enough at times that it felt much more like the Opeth I fell in love with yet still keeping with the new direction. I also really liked Pale Communion, but this is absolutely the best album since Watershed to me.

still digesting the album.. so far not impressed and I'm really trying to like it. While "Heritage" got me hooked for 1 whole month and I keep coming back to "Pale Communion", "Sorceress" was way weaker (except for 3 tracks) and this one... can't really comment yet, but seems to be again on "Sorceress" level, lacking that wow factor.
