I just love the fact that Nina sings in english while the barrio answers in spanish. It marks a cultural difference between who left and those who stay.

This embodies the responsibility that us children of immigrants, especially those of us who are first generation to attend college, have to face. The imposter syndrome, the pressure to make the sacrifices of our parents worth it. All embodied in this song. So powerful.

@The Guy Who Knows Some Guys didn’t say they didn’t ❤️ Nina (this character) and many of the other characters are children of immigrants or immigrants themselves, imposter syndrome especially when we go to college or begin our careers is unfortunately very common that’s the specific scenario I was commenting on.

Leslie has such a beautiful voice. This whole scene was so powerful. And I love how they show Nina when she was little (played by Ariana Greenblatt).

Its pretty amazing how this movie might set the threshold for future stars, cuz a lot of the main cast (and even Ariana Greenblatt in Barbie) have moved to even bigger projects and bigger roles. Unfortunately Leslie Grace rlly got screwed by Warner Bros. But Melissa Barrera in leading Scream 5 & 6. Anthony Ramos heading a major blockbuster like Transformers (but more importantly big roles in that Dumb Money ‘biopic’ and in a new Twister movie). And Corey Hawkins in that new Dracula movie. Not all first-round picks for movies but its awesome to see that while this movie didn’t do so well, the actors are getting picked up for starring roles

Hearing this for the first time was like hearing my own feelings put into music. I was born and raised in South America, in a poor community. I could see the ocean from my window, eyes lost in the horizon, always dreaming of beyond. I learned English and Portuguese on my own, got a scholarship to study in the US. I left. And while I was away, everyone always thought so proudly of me, "the girl that made it". If they could only see me. I'm not who they think I am. I struggle. I'm not a brilliant student, although I'm sure I'm smart. I work 2 or more jobs at times while I study. It's hard. But no one believes it. They're convinced I'm this superhuman who can do anything. I feel that all of it is wrong. That I should've never left, that I'm not the star child everyone thinks I am. But they're unaware of my reality. Unaware of my flawed self. I continue to work hard, always balancing on the tight rope, between succeeding, and just giving up. If I have children one day, I hope the experiences I've been through can make me a deeply empathetic and supportive mother.

I have no way to actually relate to your experiences, but have you ever thought: is this what you actually want to do? Does this make you in any way satisfied, gives you any sense of worth, purpose, happiness, hope for the future? Is this what you actually want out of life? And if not, is there any way for you to take some other path?

I come from a white family. But I also feel this pressure. I’m a 3rd generation college student. I graduated high school and went to college because that’s what I was “supposed” to do. My grandmother was a first generation. Coming from an abusive childhood. And I was the first among her 6 grandkids to go to college. She regards me with so much pride. My mom went to college online and got her degree after being a teen mom. So my grandmother is proud of her, but I’m the one “doing it right”. She throws money to me when she can and tells me “You’ll be amazing.” I don’t feel amazing. I’m so terrified of letting her down. When I failed summer course she nearly flew off the handle.

I think it's so important to note how Nina remains standing and doesn't collapse. Honestly, the mental weight of burnout, academic pressures, and being conscious over people's perception of you would be reason enough to feel like physically falling down the street. I know part of it is because Nina doesn't want her shame to be present to everyone so she saves face, but another part of it is a testament to her emotional strength.

This song is so powerful to me. My parents are both immigrants from Dominican Republic. My mom had me when she was young, she played the Latina stereotype, while my dad has been working himself to the bone since he found out about me. When I was little, I lived in the Heights, and every year, i would get into the “gifted and talented” program. My mom would say that she didn’t want to take me from my friends, but we just didn’t have the money. I knew. My entire life I’ve been the smartest, the first in everything. The first one with dreams within reach. The only person putting pressure on me is myself. To make my parents proud, to make my barrio proud. My whole life, i’ve been juggling my Dominican-ness, while trying to be the perfect girl for interviews, the perfect girl for teachers, but the perfect girl is white. i hate having to act different, but it has to be done to make everyone proud. If i slip up even a little bit, my life is over, everything I’ve worked for, is done. If I end up like Nina, how will I go on?

I relate a lot to this song. I'm the child of parents who grew up in poverty who managed to climb up somewhat through hard work, determination and a little bit of luck. They sacrificed most of the money they made to put me through private education so that I could get the extra leg up in the world that they never. I'm the first in my family to go to university, and I'm at one of the top 25 universities in the UK, and every time I struggle, or think I can't do it, all I think about is how disappointed they would be. I feel like I have to be something incredible to make up for all that they sacrificed throughout my childhood. I'm just worried I might not be able to do it.
