RYG are you kidding? She was the only anti-capitalist, reasonable person of the bunch. But of course she has no idea big corporations want yur money and they don't care if you're hungry and bankrupt. Of course!
@glossyplane5422 жыл бұрын
@RYG how much did Apple Pay you to say that
@ReddwarfIV2 жыл бұрын
@RYG She isn't ignorant. She makes valid points about financial responsibility throughout the clip. She is told to shut up and leave precisely because her arguments are valid. She isn't "anti-capitalist". I think capitalism is a better system than any of the alternatives, and I can still see that people with no money shouldn't go out and buy super expensive equipment that would be no more effective than any of the far cheaper alternatives Laura-Lee proposes. Under capitalism, consumers should have a choice of products, allowing them to buy the best one for them. What the rest of the panellists (except Duncan) are arguing is that consumers should buy the least appropriate product. Probably because they were bribed to do so. (In the skit, not IRL.)
@ReddwarfIV2 жыл бұрын
@RYG She's a normal person offering normal person advice. The other panellists don't appear to know any more than her about how Apple products actually work, or whether they really are good for graphic design. But hey, you don't have to be a 5-star chef to tell that food tastes awful. You don't have to be an acclaimed director to tell when a movie is badly made. You may not be able to express what's wrong with it, but you can still make that judgement. Laura-Lee doesn't have to be a tech genius to know that the people around her are peddling nonsense to get people to buy things they do not need. Most people _don't_ need the latest and greatest, nor can they afford it. Often, new technology is expensive, to the point that only rich people can get it. Things like cars and airplanes and mobile phones used to be solely the purview of the rich. As the technology matured, it became _more_ affordable to the average person, not less. Part of advancing technologically is making expensive things cheaper. The market incentive to do that is that normal people can't buy your product if they cannot afford it. That is very much a part of capitalism.

Man, that makes me scared of what'd it be like if I were to get a job after college. I use a new budget Dell laptop I recently got, that I'm completely happy with and don't have plans to switch for a very long time (because I don't see why I should unless I fuck it up real bad). When I showed my dad which laptop I wanted, my dad who's an office worker asked "You sure you don't want a MacBook?" and I just stood there thinking "Dad you just bought a 2017 used MacBook Air because you and I both know you can't afford the latest one, and the latest Air doesn't even have the storage nor memory that I need for my college work so I'd need to get the Pro anyway, and in no world am I using a used Macbook from pre-2021 because those all sucked". That, and I secretly wanted to play video games as well. It's very disheartening to know that in the work field there's gonna be SO much more condescending folk I don't even know who's gonna ask me, "so why don't you use a Macbook?" Bro why tf are laptops status symbols in a workplace I just wanna get my shit done so I can EAT man

I find it disgusting that the people in the comments care so much about Laura Lee and yet express no sympathy for Clifford Banes who was hit by 2 cars. Shameful.

"Well, you know, if they get a MacBook Pro they can learn graphic design. They can pick up some freelance design work while they're waiting for the full-time job." "I need to teach myself graphic design. I keep telling myself I'm going to do it." LOVE it.

Apple's kind of amazing with how they advertise their products. They manage to sell something that's $500 for $2000! And they could've possibly out sold all the other brands with a $500 price tag. That is incredible marketing. All for a glowing apple.

Lol anyone who says Mac is for creative types doesn't know what they're talking about. All the real creative software like adobe programs, Blender, Fusion 360 and AutoCAD are Windows first if not Windows only.

The funniest part is that if there is that film companies owned by apple actually use PCs instead of mac because PCs have more memory.
@cottonballs18510 жыл бұрын
***** I guess he's talking about RAM. Apple solders it to motherboards, so there's no practical way to upgrade. As for storage size, Macs are on par with PC.

Lol, I know. Things changed either shortly before or shortly after I made my comment. Most people are on Mac now. I don't quite recall why people made the switch, though. I'm assuming Apple came out with a better product than Windows or something along those lines. The tech industry is a pretty fast moving, fickle one. It is very competitive. Who is on top changes very frequently. I wouldn't be surprised if, in a few years, everyone is back on PCs.

TL;DR, used to be able to get high quality laptops from all vendors so apple seemed overpriced, now everyone is trying to cut corners more and more so apple quality control > lower prices. Apple didn't change, other vendors did. Everyone is still on PCs, the only thing is, "recently" laptops have been degrading in build quality. With companies like HP cutting corners, every other company has had to do the same to compete. What we're left with is Thinkpads moving from being legendary computers that people still use 15 years later without any issues, to laptops that break after a year or two of usage. Dell has gotten somewhat better recently but its still lacking in terms of quality control, with some laptops using screens that are horrible to look at even at the 1300 price range. Also, recently windows has been cracking down on their laptop bios' to make them "more secure", by preventing you from installing another OS like linux. You used to have the option of opting out of having a preinstalled OS, and install linux or windows yourself, now you have to pay for windows. It also spies on you like crazy. Meanwhile, apple laptops are consistent in terms of quality, still support dual booting out of the box, have really good build quality, and generally have decent specs where it matters. For most professionals that's what matters. They'll pay the extra apple fee, and then install whatever linux distro they want on it or use OSX for more creative tasks. Its not worth the hassle of trying to figure out which models of the new thinkpad have cooling issues, or which model has a hinge thats been known to break.

In the Know is back! What is the Onion without Clifford Banes? The debate actually seemed too real. I've actually had this exact debate with a group before filling in Duncan Birch's point. The dismissal of computers and entertainment is too harsh. Many employers today only use email to communicate to applicants, and accept only online applications. Relying on internet cafes could actually cost a lot to frequently check. And entertainment is important. In harsh times we need escapism.
