The 1990 NASCAR Winston Cup Series was the 42nd season of professional stock car racing in the United States and the 19th modern-era Cup Series. It began on Sunday, February 11, and ended on Sunday, November 18. Because of a highly controversial penalty to Mark Martin early in the season, Dale Earnhardt with Richard Childress Racing was crowned the Winston Cup champion for the fourth time, edging out Martin by 26 points.

Mark Martin was my favorite driver when I became a fan in 1998

I was a Martin fan from 1989 till the end, and the biggest pro and con in Mark's career was Jack Roush.

Yes mark was a good driver but I went to many races and listened on scanner, I definitely watched every race and the truth is mark could not take the pressure, especially the pressure of earnhardt anywhere around him, go back and look at the last 10 races of the 1990 season , dale led and finished ahead of Mark in almost every race, especially the last 3 races which where rockingham, Phoenix and Atlanta, dale led Laps in all 3, completely dominated Phoenix led all but 47 laps and won, mark didn't even lead a lap in last 3 raced. You don't win championships not running up front especially running against drivers like dale. Mark is was and always will be a great chumpion

Yup, they choked in Pheonix by pittng for tires and finishing 9th (IIRC) and has been well documented, the entire team choked in Atlanta.
