Mark, I just visited your place a few weeks back and it brought back so many memories of racing in the late 80's and 90's. I was traveling to my daughters home in Springfield and I made the detour through Batesville. I loved everything I saw there, what a great career and showcase. What is the story of the Foremost logo on your old car? My dad worked for Foremost for many years and it put a smile on my face seeing it. Great content in this video.

I'll tell you a story that represents the kind of man Mark Martin is. There was a young man from my hometown that went to North Carolina right out of high school and went to work for Hendrick Motorsports. He was one of Mark Martin's tire changers when he drove there. When he go married they put out the gift list at local stores like most people do when getting married. Mark Martin went to the store and bought every single thing on their list and gave it them as a wedding gift.

A buddy of mine went and worked at Hendrick after auto tech school and putting in 4 or 5 years at the Ford dealership. He always said he was gonna go work at a NASCAR shop and he did. Pretty sure he's still there. He started in the engine teardown room and last I heard, he was learning to assemble them. It surprised the he** out of me when he got hired there because he wasn't an A student or anything. Middle of the class, I'd say, while I was #1 because I had 10+ years experience on everyone in my class. I was 30 and they were all 18 lol. I got hired at the Chevy dealership before leaving school making 3x what everyone else made. They all started at $8/hr changing oil. I started as a technician making $25/hr. I guess Ben had the last laugh though. He works for a NASCAR team while I don't lol I couldn't do it today anyway. I doubt I'll ever leave this city now. My daughter & only child is buried here and I won't leave. Ever. I can't be that far away from... Edit: I remembered his name so I looked his his name plus NASCAR. Turns out I was wrong. He went to work for ROUSH-YATES! WHAT!? Pretty sure he's still there according to his LinkedIn.
@J.C... Жыл бұрын
Looks like I was mistaken. He went to work for ROUSH-YATES. I knew that but it slipped my mind when I wrote this originally. That's why he started in the engine teardown room. They build engines. I'm sure that he's moved on to building them by now. It's been 10 years at least and he's still there as of August 11, 2023. WAY TO GO, BEN! 🙏👍

I have a great Mark Martin story as a kid. I grew up racing quarter midgets in the QMRA all around central florida in the early 2000's. We had a race at the now gone, Apopka track an I was moving up from Sr. novice to Sr. honda. Mark was there with his son Matt an they were in the staging lane right in front of us. I was incredibly nervous as the Sr. honda class was pretty intense (I was 11 or so years old lol). I guess my dad asked Mark to come say something to me to calm my nerves because the next thing I knew, Mark Martin was down on his knee next to me and said "Are you nervous?" I nodded my head Yes. "Does it feel like a bunch of butterfly's in you stomach?" I nodded my head some more and said "yes sir". He then said "I have had that same feeling for 25 years and I love it! You're going to do great!" I never forgot that moment and it has helped me continue venture down some other paths of motorsports through out the years. I'm 32 years old now, have a 1 year old daughter and I hope I can pass this story on to her when or if she takes up racing like I did.

That was fantastic! I have so many great memories of Mark during that time period. I was watching the race when he punched the guard rail. My favorite story of Mark's return with the Hendrick #5 is because he was 50 years old, and all the young kids driving the Car of Tomorrow were wining & complaining and Mark made the thing fly. I think there is a clip of and interview where they preface the question to Mark about what he thought of the COT with a statement saying all the younger drivers thought the COT was awful, and Mark's response was something like, "This is a car you really have to drive, and I like that!" "I guess those young guys can only drive a perfect car". It went something to that affect, and it was the perfect response because the sport really was heading in the direction ( a downward spiral in my opinion) where the engineers were giving the younger generation of drivers a near perfect car. Thanks again for this once in a lifetime opportunity, and I can't wait for the next video!

@@jjmckay6man1 on top of everything I still have very minor scars from Clint Boyers car sliding on its roof across the finish line right in front of me! Some angel of a guy pulled me off the fence just in time, as I was videoing everything through a lens and didn't see him coming, but if it hadn't been for him I likely would have been hurt. That was definitely a rip off. Another Nascar bullshit change the rules as we go!

Mark is hands down one of the coolest and friendliest people. I grew up a fan of his and will forever be a fan of his! Best driver to never win a championship

Getting to hangout with a legend of nascar. Hearing Mark talk about the past. IROC racing was always some of the best racing there was back in the day. Thanks for a little stroll down memory lane.

When Mark said “I can’t remember what I had for lunch, but I remember crazy things like that”. Same. Such a humble sweet man. #LEGEND

Mark is truly one of the big guys in Nascar. He was a truly great person. I never got a chance to meet him back when I was around and that is one thing I wish I did. My father and Bobby Allison where business partners in Bobby Allison wireless and that got me into the pits and garage area and i wish I could have meet him.

Man, I worked in the Kia store right next to there until March this year. So cool to see this place on KZbin. Lived in Batesville for 14 years until I moved to Wyoming this year.

@@Stapleton42 absolutely. Loving the historical stuff going on with this channel. I’m a huge history nerd and am currently in college to become a Automotive Technician. Learning all I can about cars and motorsports combines the two into one thing. It’s very satisfying for me to watch.

Mark Martin has slowly become one of my favorite racers of all time. My childhood was during his Hendrick and MWR days, as his career was coming to a close. Now, I have a whole new respect for Martin than just the old gunslinger I saw in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Best driver to never win a Cup, bar none. Sadly, the personable driver curse also bit his successor in the face of Roush role, Carl Edwards.

Diehard nascar fan since the early 90s, never really appreciated Mark until he left Roush for whatever reason and I regret not having become a diehard Martin fan prior. His results in the Army car turned the page for me, seemed like such a genuine dude. The fact he was aware of you & your channel is awesome. That had to be a damn good feeling.
