I bought ANOTHER 928 and took it to these guys. What's wrong this time?

Buchanan Automotive in Sydney are well known as the 'go to' guys for transaxle Porsches like the 928, 944 and 968. Bruce has been working on them since they first arrived, and his son Sean for 23 years since he left school. You could say they know a thing or two and Bruce isn't shy in voicing his opinion. In his own engaging way.
Recently I bought this car at auction and, as usual, it's time to pop in for some basic checks. If you've ever thought about buying a 928 you should watch this.
We appreciate your support. If you enjoyed the video, a LIKE would be much appreciated. Or leave a comment or a question. Thanks for watching.

Outstanding video! I've been lucky enough to have owned two 928s. First one was a 1991 S4 followed a few years later by a 1993 GTS, both 4-speed autos, loved 'em both. Unfortunately the 20000 mile round trip to have them 'fettled' by these blokes seemed a bit excessive...so it was the local Porsche independent then. Currently hooning around in a 1996 993 Carrera 2 but keeping an eye out for another 928! Will be keeping an eye out for your other vids on these beautiful cars. Cheers from a pom in a rather chilly Otford, Kent, UK.

Thanks Neil. There's a heap of 928 (and 911) content on the channel already, including 17 episodes so far of my heretical 928 EV conversion which is progressing slower than I'd like. Cheers to you too. Don't worry, as I reach for my pullover down here it's getting warmer every day over there.

Very interesting video about the Fuel system filter. Thank you 🙏🏻 maybe that’s why hesitate to start only after leaving it for a few weeks and not starting it. (got 17,000 miles ) on my 84’ 928 S American spec automatic. I don’t find fuel consumption a lot at all. I actually would prefer it to use a lot of fuel ⛽️ simply because it’s not my daily driver and sits a lot because we have 12 cars. So when I do take it out, I’d rather to use the old fuel quickly so I can get new fresh fuel into it more often.

Very impressed with the knowledge and love the videos on the 928's. However, I have to mention Sean has the pull ties on his hoodie dangling down into the engine bay. OK with the engine off but would be dangerously close to any belt when the engine is running. Cutting these off or wearing a different fleece or sweater could prevent a nasty injury which could be life changing. Keep safe!

Poor Bruce and Sean! New owners constantly craving their shared excitement for the latest purchase! But pretty rare to get straight up, particularly for "auction wins" And enough with the 20W/50 angle, has been on the record for decades and for seriously good reason. Think you gave it at least 3 or 4 runs in this vid alone. Btw, the Red 86 Turbo in the workshop background with gen Fuchs caught my eye. Irrespective, best Transaxle workshop and body of knowledge I know of

@inCARnationAustralia
@inCARnationAustralia Жыл бұрын
Yeah it's not an ad, and we don't want to slag off at the new super synthetic oils because in the right car I'm sure they're great. For the record, Bruce for decades used to use Valvoline GP50 20W50, as per the owners manual, but no doubt there were other good mineral oils of the same grade. It was and remains important that the oil has a high ZDDP level, but this is hard to find as the Zinc has adverse affects on catalytic converters and emissions (cat.converters only came into mass usage in the mid 1980s). Hence the ZDDP was phased out or reduced in many oils. That particular formulation is no longer available I believe but BB is clearly happy with the Gulf one shown. And if he's happy that it performs well, then I'm happy. And it wasn't expensive. Also woth commenting that at times Porsche race cars have been sponsored by various oil companies proudly shown on the car's livery, but they were actually running a different brand in the engines.

I’m looking at an ‘86 928s with 65k miles but low compression on one cylinder (50lbs). Would you guess that this would more likely be an upper end/head issue versus a lower end cylinder issue? I’ll dig deeper but obviously a head removal is a lot less work than pulling the engine.
@inCARnationAustralia
@inCARnationAustralia 9 ай бұрын
I wouldn't like to guess - I'm no expert. My first suspicion would be a burned or bent valve. But yes head removal is obviously much less work. 50 lbs is very low - I presume all the others are over 100. Can I suggest you get someone to do a leakdown test to determine whether it's more likely to be a valve seating problem than a rings problem. Also a camera scope to have a look at cylinder walls and valves. So most likely causes - either rings, valves or head gasket. How's the oil and coolant looking too? You really don't want to be doing a bottom end rebuild if you can help it.
@bobd9868
@bobd9868 9 ай бұрын
@@inCARnationAustralia ok, I appreciate the reply. I haven't actually looked at the car just yet, I was just trying to gather any general opinions beforehand. Yes, I will certainly scope the cylinders and do a leak down test. I appreciate it.

I’m wondering about the oil. With that Gulf 20 w 50 does he think or you the Motul 20 W 50 is the same quality as that Gulf or better? I want to put the absolute best oil in my baby i call Christine. She is bright Red.
@inCARnationAustralia
@inCARnationAustralia Жыл бұрын
I can't speak for Bruce and I know he won't want to go to print making comparisons between brands. But Motul is a quality product. If it's a mineral 20W50 with ZDDP for sure it'll be a good product.
@jasonknight5863
@jasonknight5863 Жыл бұрын
@@inCARnationAustralia great thank you for that information. I just heard that the ZDP eventually clogs up catalytic converters. Doesn’t the 928 have those ? Or maybe it’s just the American delivery ones that came with cats. Perhaps Australian ones didn’t back in 1984 or so.
@inCARnationAustralia
@inCARnationAustralia Жыл бұрын
@@jasonknight5863 I am definitely no authority on this but as I understand it 'clogs up' is probably overstating it. Yes manufacturers reduced it because of the detrimental affect Zinc has on cat converter. But it's not like they suddenly stop working or fail emissions. Yes as you say, early 928s like mine don't have cats but later ones did.
