Another great video NoSkillsRequired ! Tried this out today and it worked perfectly using a Beko washing m/c motor, even though it has only 2 coil wires instead of the 3 on your motor. I rigged up a test board with the motor, using a grooved belt and washing machine drum pulley to try to get some idea of the torque output on 12 and 24 volts. The output is poor on 12v but quite a bit stronger on 24, ( the corresponding 'free' revolutions go from 2200 to 3500), although I'm in some doubt whether even on 24 it would have enough torque to power an electric bike as you suggest. However I'm doing some more preliminary tests before I decide whether or not to go ahead with my proposed electric bike project which you have sparked off with your informative videos !

Very good video !!! I have a similar motor but it has only 4 pins (besides the 2 ones for the tacometer) instead of 5 like the one that you´re showing here. Does it mean that the field windings are connected inside the motor ? Thank you !!!
@georgestyer21538 жыл бұрын
Series wound motors are able to run on both AC and DC. Those from washing machines are designed to run on AC through a Triac speed controller. In theory any series wound motor running on AC will develop a back EMF (electro magnetic force) so in practice a 230 volt motor will produce a back EMF of about 180 Volt. Therefore the difference of about 50 Volts if applied by a DC source will make for a good rotational performance. In practice almost any DC volts applied from 12 upwards will produce a rotation, but with little torque. 50 Volts will give a decent performance. Try this...2 motors connected with a belt across each pulley. Put 230 Volt through a speed controller (dimmer switch) on one and measure the output of the other. It should be about 160 to 180.
@georgestyer21538 жыл бұрын
This will indicate the back EMF because after all a motor is only a generator in reverse...or vice versa
@NoSkillsRequired8 жыл бұрын
Very good explanation you know this stuff i know about a dc motor in reverse is a generator and i tried to spin this washing machine motor but i was getting nothing that means i was not spinning fast enough.Thanks for the advice and if you want a practic example watch my video about hand crank generator from a microwave oven motor and if you have something about synchronous motor please share
@georgestyer21538 жыл бұрын
Just for fun and learning take a washing machine motor and identify the field winding, easy really, the two brush connections are for the armature, the other two are for the field. Now apply about 24 volt DC through some sort of controller (variable resistor power type) to the field and then rotate the armature and from the brushes you will get good power
@georgestyer21538 жыл бұрын
Single phase "squirrel cage" motors (these are ordinary motors and not series wound AC/DC types) use two sets of windings. One for start and the other for run, a switch operated by the shaft of the motor will disconnect the start winding as soon as the motor is running, but the drawback is "slip" this means that the rotational speed is not in synchro with the supply 50Hz UK 60Hz USA. This start winding also dictates the direction of rotation. A synchronous motor (a small one found in fans etc.,) uses one basic winding and a single copper loop called a shading ring which will give the motor direction by inducing a high magnetic field on one of the poles.
@georgestyer21538 жыл бұрын
This is more synchronous and can run up to nearly synchronous speed. This is for a 50Hz supply 1500 rpm, assuming a 4 pole motor and 3000 rpm for a 2 pole motor There is a slip loss of 5% on squirrel cage motors referred to earlier A true synchronous motor will use only one winding and will be run up with an external motor before being connected to the supply. This then will run at at true 1500 RPM

On the 2 speed wires could you connect a potentiometer to variey the speed at which the motor spins?
@Garfield1007 жыл бұрын
Don't attach a potentiometer directly to this. You'll have a fried potentiometer afterwards :P Look into pulse-width-modulation (pwm) for things like this. This if you're working with batteries. If you're going to plug this into the wall, a potentiometer would pretty much melt and you'd get hurt. For pwm with mains power, a light switch dimmer might work (they work with pwm) but make sure it's rated with at least as many watts as the motor.

Apply 2v to 12v on field coil (brushes) then tap 1 or all stator coils for power. Wire the coils in series for the simplest output. The higher the voltage on the field (brushes) the greater output of the generator at speed. If wind powered, you will want to vary the field voltage with speed of rotation. Faster rotation, less voltage on field, slower rotation more voltage in field. That will keep the output steady. A simple voltage regulator off a car or motorcycle can do that for you. Add at least 22,000 micro farad caps and it will run without a battery as long as it is turning. Output will be AC.

+Science WITH AUSAN I think you might need a capacitor is different wiring
@AUSAN6 жыл бұрын
NoSkillsRequired please tell me how I have a capacitor but how to connect to battery
@tk5434 жыл бұрын
@@AUSAN You are trying to run a single phase motor with a battery is not efficient. Your induction motor is hard to control the speed. Too much power needed for the motor will cause your wires and battery to overheat. The motor draws too many amps, your DC battery does not supply (even in AC, the capacitor is there to supply more power). The positive goes through your capacitor by the way, into the motor windings. The negative to the only other lead wire coming thru. You will not be able to power the AC motor with DC battery, unless you use a power invertor. You will need about 3000 watt power inverter which is very costly. If I was you, depending on what you are doing with the motor and how you are applying it, if you want to run off of batteries, find a PERMANENT MAGNET DC motor from a cart, or treadmill, or forklift. These motors New are anywhere from $300 on up. golf cart motors run about $400-$1000 and supply about 3-10hp @ 48volts. You can usually find a tread mill for free somewhere

Thank you for verification of my technical analysis. It is quite clever, though I have some skepticism until I do this, somewhere in the back of my mind I can understand why might work. Perhaps the contacts making and breaking to their connected coils builds an energy that in effect acts like alternating current to the motor.This is the quick conjecture of a person ready for bed. Ha! Curiously what RPM do you get, it seems to run quite fast. Thanks for the feedback, welcome comments on why it works.

The idea is to connect a container to water source by BEKO inlet with a way to open the valve when the tank is empty and close the valve when the tank is full. I'm wondering if the chamber pressure and pressure switch will be helpful without the control panel. I know that I may find a similar system in the market. But the idea is to recycling. Lee Macho Just remember that universal motors aren't very eficient. I don't know what you are building but if it's a vechicle, ac motors with pernament magnets will get you around 25% further.

My motor has only 5 pins, two to the tachometer, two to the coils and I assume the last one to the brush. What do I do?

Hello ,,, I have the same motor, but it does not work by 12 volts. Put him a battery charger, ,, 10 Amp power did not work. What is the reason, please explain please
@NoSkillsRequired7 жыл бұрын
+Elyas S hy there check the wires connection watch the video repplay as many time you need and then try with a 2x9v battery in series and take a look on the label if is induction is not gonna work in the same configuration
@HelgiThorisson2 жыл бұрын
After successfully trying to connect a washing machine motor like this to 12V batteries I ordered this 3V~24V 3A 72W Adjustable Power Supply Adapter,DC 3V 5V 6V 9V 12V 15V 18V 19V 20V 24V Universal AC/DC Adapter,100V-240V AC to DC Converter. It works like a switch and speed control for the motor. The maximum volts out are 24.1V from the power supply but the motor starts spinning when the volts out are around 7V so the speed range is rather good. I have no means of measuring the speed unfortunately.

You have to identify the coils and brushes then connect one brush to one coil and the other brush to plus and coil to minus check out my other videos should be a diagram somewhere

IS IT POSSIBLE TO USE AND BUILD THIS MOTOR UP TO TURN ON A SELFMADE TREADMILL (DOG)? ADJUSTABLE FROM 0 - 16 KM/H ? WHAT DO YOU ALL NEED TO LET THIS WORK PROPERLY? DO YOU PREFER TO USE POELIE (BELT) OR CHAIN ? GR.
@NoSkillsRequired7 жыл бұрын
I don't know for sure because the washing machine motor is rated at 1/4HP or 3/4HP and the normal treadmill motor 1.5HP it's all about the force that a motor is rated for.Imagine that the washing machine is designed to rotate 5-10KG of clothes and treadmill can move a person.But you can use the advantage that the motor spins very fast and with a set of wheels you can amplify the force take a look at the microwave oven motor.The motor used in the video is 0.6HP and the microwave is 0.006HP so with a set of gears a washing machine motor rated at 500w can move a person of 100KG. KG-kilograms HP-horse power All the best.

I'm still trying to figure out how a 110 volt AC motor can possibly run on 12 volts DC. Unless the motor is designed for that. I've never seen a transformer inside a dryer or washing machine.
@NoSkillsRequired7 жыл бұрын
+James Seabolt Hi mate this motors are called universal motors that means can run on Ac/Dc now on 12v is not going to run as fast as 220/120v but there are cheap if not free and run with 48v can make an ebike cheap all the best

NICE I WANTED TO KNOW IF I COULD RUN A WASHER MACHINE MOTOR WITH A WASHING MACHINE WATER PUMP TO PUMP WATER OFF GRID SO THANK YOU SIR D C THAT IS HOOKED TO SOLAR PANEL
@NoSkillsRequired8 жыл бұрын
It is possible but there are 12v water pump that can go direct to solar panel is more eficient.watch my other video you will find more off grid tips and solutions.all the best
@crpth17 жыл бұрын
Martin P. Murtha - In terms of cost and simplicity and silent operation, depending on your application, a 12v submersible pump is hard to beat. 2 wires (+ , - ) 1 output for a hose... and did I mention cheap. ;-)

poor ac motor, if you still running like this the coils have a joule effect cause you use an battery dc, then the overheating kill those coils
