Pretty cool.....I recall back in the early 70's going with a friend to have a driveshaft cut and altered for a project car.....we visited a retired machinist he knew, and in his shop, the size of a two car garage he had, not a Harley engine, but a Gray marine engine set up and running a series of pulleys, shafts and belts criss crossing the ceiling....running a couple lathes, drill presses and a milling machine. It was a complete 1920's era machine shop.....I often wondered what happened to it all, probably scrapped as the entire area was developed a few years later. What always interests me is the degree of longevity and reuse of these old devices.....stuff was made to last, unlike today's disposable crap.
@deucerider4304 жыл бұрын
How lucky you were to have visited such a shop! In my hometown we had 2 brothers that invented and devised machinery as well.As a youngster I remember visiting their steam powered sawmill, with an amazing criss-cross of overhead belts running the various saws, ie. the main saw, the cut-off, the edger,, even a blower to exhaust the sawdust... All could be either engaged or disengaged at will by "shifting" levers on a central control area. Fascinating!

"Sounds like my mom's washing machine!" My mom would say when she heard a Harley go by. She told me about watching her mom kick start her washer. My grandma was tiny. I doubt she ever weighed more than a hundred pounds. Thinking of her back in the 30's doing that always brings a smile to my face.

Old Harley engines were used in many odd ways in Finland, too, just like the single cylinder in this video. I knew a guy who built a terrible "car" with a Harley engine after the war. There were also some more successful ways to use old engines: Toivo Kaario (1912-1970), a Finnish pioneer in hovercraft innovations, used a Harley engine in one of his first prototypes (1949). He was later invited to lecture at Princeton University, at the Symposium on Ground Effect Phenomena.

Fun to watch you videos and recognize all the Ford Model T parts which were used on these bikes. This video has the hand cranks. Readily available at the time these engines were produced, could have been spares or picked up on the used market for super cheap. The other part I've noticed so far are the "No Skid" tires on some of these bikes.

Same with the old Cushman scooter engines. They were originally made for stationary water pumps but then the depression came along and the company needed another source of income and started making scooters. Daisy B.B. guns were originally given out as a premium when you bought a windmill from the Plymouth Iron Windmill company. The guns were so popular they quit making windmills and started making b.b. guns. Those old companies thought outside of the box...they had to, no Govt. bailouts in those days!

Boy my generation (I'm 27) here in the U.S.A is messed up with the measuring systems. We know how long 1 foot is, we know what 1 yard is, we know 1 mile. We don't know how long 1 cm is, we don't know how long a meter is, we don't know kilometers. I see people freaking out going 80KPH!!!... converted 50mph wait that's slow... where we are most screwed is engine size, most kids don't know what a 454 Cubic Inch is, nor a 350 C.I., or 460 C.I. or 60 C.I., but we know what 5.0 Liter is , or 6.2 L is and we know what 600cc is or 450cc. Gotta love it. Go to the auto store and ask for something for your 472 C.I and they'll say "what size is that?" Sorry I meant for my 7.7L. I love your videos, but I have to convert from cubic inch to liters to understand the size of a motorcycle engine. Sorry for the rant.

I used to have a book titled Inside Harley Davidson, loaned it out and now I'm trying to get it back. In the book it shows a prototype HD walk behind garden tractor! The Motor Company was struggling to stay alive during the depression. The book also shows two VL road paint stripper machines that the factory mounted the stripping equipment on a side car. Rear sprocket is giant to allow low speeds. Did you know that Indian made some now very rare outboard motor boat motors? I have a Pan and a Dyna Evo and my dream motorcycle would be a Maytag washing machine motor powered bicycle! -'lil stan
