Nothing against Russian astronauts/cosmonauts/scientists - but it was the USSR that landed, not Russia. By that logic, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and about a dozen other countries have also been on the moon. However India's achievement is truly a pioneering kind because IT IS indeed very difficult to land near the south pole. The orbital mechanics are completely different, and the sheer risk associated with it all is what has deterred other countries to attempt such a feat.
