India, the land of Mahatma Gandhi, nonviolent protest and Hinduism, is seeking to strengthen itself economically and overtake China. It has already surpassed its giant neighbor in population; the next target is manufacturing.
To this end, one initiative has taken center stage: "Make in India". The objective? To make India an immensely attractive place to invest. First, however, it will have to solve one of its main problems: having up-to-date, quality infrastructure.
How did India get here? How is Narendra Modi tackling the infrastructure challenge? Could India become the next global manufacturing epicenter? Which industry could put Xi Jinping's geopolitical plans in check?

And fyi for the ignorant people in the comment section who think caste system is indigenous to India let me enlighten you a bit caste system was introduced by the Britishers to divide India and especially hindus so that they can rule country for long time in India there has always been Varna system which segments people according to their capabilities to work for example there used to be four segments in Varna like Brahmin, kshatriya, vaishya and shudra according to their capabilities to work so if one wants to be anything among he can become which suits his interest Britishers also introduced caste system in rawanda to divide people where there was no Varna system Britishers wrongly interpreted Varna system and reintroduce as caste system to play with minds of the people in the country.

Three main problems unsolved are: no free market for farmers, no labour and land reforms yet. Without these 3 we cannot leapfrog decades in matter of years. PM Modi has tried to pass these bills but opposition politics has derailed these crucial reforms. I have seen that interview & Report of DW which you are referring it here. There are 1000's of such scholars with different opinions - some more positive & some more negative. Until last decade it was difficult to spread knowledge in India and that was a big barrier but with one of cheapest internet rates in country and cheap mobile phones I am able to witness the flow of knowledge directly from anywhere else in the world to a rural village in India. For eg one doesn't need to wait 5-10years to learn python to come to his country or village. It's their on KZbin with Harvard Prof videos. Yes the implementation & practice of it will take time but atleast the basic knowledge will reach to every indian at any corner of country in no time. Women participation is ~30% and not under 25% so it shows its improving. With growth in multiple sectors will also open opportunities for women too. Undoubtedly there will be many challenges to over come.

@@yeahwhateveridc6062I am a Chinese who cannot speak English, but I can watch videos in other languages through translation, and there are no people discussing the comparison between China and India on Chinese websites. Chinese people have never regarded India as a competitor, nor have they worried about when India's development will catch up with China. Everyone has the right to pursue a better way of life. Chinese people only want to surpass themselves and do better, and competition will make them progress. Don't think that if you make progress, others will fall behind. The majority of people in India are still very feudal and backward in their thinking. Indians are always worried about others making their own money, and they are not trustworthy. What is very unfortunate is that even after witnessing economic blunders of Jawaharalal Nehru for about 20 years, Congress party still did not correct its mistakes. Biggest reasons that India is still poor and backward and so far behind China are the bureaucratic monsters and inefficient/ corrupt state enterprises created and sustained by Congress party for more than 50 years. It will take maybe another 20 years to undo the damage. Modi is the guy India needs.

In my life time Toyota has gone from having the title of Jap Scrap to being the standard bearer of manufacturing achievement in North America. India can possibly do the same as South Korea, Japan and Taiwan all of them starting out as low quality producers if they'll listen and take advice. Culturally they are dam stubborn, detrimentally proud and their cast system is systemically bigoted. Other than that, they're the best dam people you'll ever get to know and the foods will blow your mind. You may call those Indian sectors "robust" but in various ways they have failed their potential. As an American, I see less Indian call centers which are being replaced by operations that are easier to understand free from Indian dialects and sometimes by automated systems. India's software once was a global presence but I rarely see that anymore. Software today is written at as well elsewhere and using tools that that don't require as much skill. Even more than China, India's technological proficiency has fallen behind as leading countries have made great advances over the past 20 years. Indian investments in technology has largely gone to waste and if an Indian really has a world beating idea that could be profitable, he'd probably be smart to develop that idea in the US instead of in India.

Every time someone compares India to China, it’s in terms of overtaking the economy; as an overseas Indian, I can tell tell you it will not happen in this century. Communist China can manipulate their currency and there is nothing international body can do about it. China also doesn’t have to worry about who will be elected president. Basically India’s democracy will hurt it. Now, India really doesn’t need to overtake China in economy. India just needs be self reliant for the next two decades and continue to build infrastructure and pull its population out of poverty. With US and China duking it out for no 1 economy, India should focus on building. 75 years after independence and 20 more to become 3rd largest economy. That’s a deal.

Frankly, anyone who has spent time in India understands that the ubiquitous problem is corruption. It is a problem that permeates every sector and every level of that society. From policemen to cab drivers, everyone seems to be on the dole. It's a central fact of life there. China had a similar problem with corruption and to their credit, they eradicated much if not most of it. The catch is that to do this, they had to resort to extra-legal measures that were only possible in an authoritarian state. The examples are rife. When food safety inspectors were found responsible for allowing tainted pet food to reach market as the result of bribes, the Central Government arrested, detained, secretly tried, and summarily executed them. Corrupt military officers have been quietly removed. Thousands of corrupt politicians have been quietly removed, tried, imprisoned, and often executed. You can do all of these things in a country with no democratic tradition. India is totally different. For all of its issues, India is still the world's largest democracy. If Modi and his Hindu nationalist thugs try to clamp down using the Chinese playbook, there will be a massive uprising. Anyone who has tried to do business in India has encountered corruption, at some level. This makes India generally less attractive for foreign investors. Without that infusion of foreign direct investment (as happened in China), India doesn't have a chance.

You are right about present India. But you, my friend aren't unfortunately well informed about indian history prior to British rule. Talking about India's unproductiveness, it was a meticulous manifestation during colonial era facilitating unidirectional flow of resources and that of finished goods for growing industries in England at the cost of indigenous industries here. This situation was exacerbated by the red tapism and inefficiencies brought in by centralized economy post independence. This has resulted in a largely neglected secondary sector while over reliance and over burdening of the primary and tertiary sectors. Apart from this small thing that I wanted to add, personally speaking, you people make great videos and have my support and best wishes👍

Correction. India was a sub continent of many countries and is not a single country before the British colonialism. These countries have totally different languages and cultures. For example present Pakistan speaks Urdu, Tamil Naidu speaks Tamil, Kashmiris speaks Kashmiris, khalistani speaks Punjabi etc with totally different writing scripts. An estimate of close to a hundred languages not dialects of a language are used. The British lumped all these gountries into a single administration area for ease of control. When the British granted independence it did it in a hurry and did not consult all involved. This led to the first break up of Pakistan. Kashmir is a trouble spot. Bangladesh had ceceded. Kalistan has its independence movement. In its history Nrs. Gandhi was assassinated by sikhs and her son was assassinated by Tamils. Present India officially has a national language but English is the only common language. It will be tough to pull all these " countries" into one direction.

Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, China had their issues before they overcame their problems. Under the Mughals & British India became no 2 in GDP. That couldn’t happen with suppression. Some of the East Asian & SE Asia were far far far behind India when India got independent. In 1990, China & India’s GDP were fairly close. In 2023, India has crawled while China has jumped. Meanwhile these other countries have leaped passed India. You can’t blame Mughals & British when Indians have done a very poor job post independence. Instead of blaming others focus on learning best practices in these countries.

The China today has high level skill workers often beating those in the west for high skill jobs, they are innovative and technology leaders competiting with US companies, China has the most companies in the fortune 500.
