I once had a guy grab me from behind (in the US) and I used a typical American pepper spray and sprayed him over my shoulder... just a small squirt and he was done, he let me go and I was able to run away. It was a steady pointed stream so no splashback. If I used one of the ones featured in this video I woulda been hit too since the guy was right behind me in a half-nelson. Ya those aerosol ones are crap, what's the point of incapacitating your attacker if you also get incapacitated?

Great job reviewing the most common pepper sprays available here in India, I don’t think anyone else here has reviewed pepper sprays as comprehensively as you have. I have purchased impower in the past. After watching the video I agree that cobra seems to be the most effective brand in India. I definitely think companies need to do more research, they should remember that they are producing a self defence tool and should cut corners with their product. We should try manufacturing a prototype based on the American brands. 😛

I was a beat cop in Honolulu, Hawaii. Pepper spray is a great tool. Saw it work on quite a few folks. The fight USUALLY goes right out of them. We cops all had to get sprayed in the police academy. The guy who hit me with the spray was NOT my biggest fan and he painted my eyeballs with the stuff. AGONY! And the amount of snot it makes is amazing. My eyeballs hurt for about a week afterwards. Compare that with getting tazed. Yes, I was the stupid guy who said he would "ride the bull" for 5 seconds. Felt like I was getting hit with a million whips all at once. But...when it's over, it's over. I will take a tazer over pepper spray any day of the week!

Based on the little research I have done, fog type is better for civilians than stream or gel. Yes there will be a blow back, but generally civilians don't practice enough to get accuracy with gel/stream, where accuracy is important. With fog, you just need to point it at the general direction and spray. For example, with gel/stream, Someone can just cover their face with their hands and come out ok, since the stream hit their hands... with a fog system, since it's in the air, If he breaths in, even if he covers his face with glasses, he will be effected to some level.

There's a place for aerosol pepper sprays. They are excellent for disabling a large number of people. So you shouldn't call aerosol pepper sprays rubbish. Gels and streams work for one to one combat or a maximum of 3 people. Aerosols on the other hand can be effective for around 20 people. The whole point is to spray and backoff. You're not supposed to stand there after spraying. If you want to use a spray indoors, like in a cab or in a room, then your best bet is the MACE stream spray or a gel spray (not available in India yet).

Thanks a lot for this comparison! This is so useful for anyone who might be thinking of buying one. I didn’t know there were different types of pepper spray (aerosol, gel etc.). I guess the aerosol type will be more useful if you are attacked by a bunch of hooligans, not just one attacker, rather than the gel type. Have you taken any course in self-defence, like Krav Maga, judo etc.?

POM OC Spray check it out. Its strongest legal limit in US, and theres a self defense channel, Active Self Protection or ASP that uses it and tests it. It's a liquid spray and they even sell inert cans to practice with.
