After I watched you video, I purchased a Juki 1181N - Walking foot machine. I used a Singer Heavy duty before and making canvas bags, dust covers for my equipment and now starting to make backpacks. The Singer served me very well. I did not have stitch quality issues like you mention. However, the machine strained on multiple layers of canvas and webbing combinations I used. The industrial machine makes light work of it all and the speed is an absolute pleasure if I need to do tent repairs etc where you sew really long seams! I never even dreamed of attempting the tent repairs on the home machines. Thanks for your advice, it opened a new world for me Julie. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for this. I own an industrial Juki and several home Berninas. The Juki 5550N which cost me $500 used is a far superior machine to my Berninas. The quality and control it gives you for the cost is amazing. Home machines now seem like children's toys to me. The reason not to get one is not having the space. They are mostly maintenance free as well.

Yes, once you go industrial - it's hard to go back to domestic ones!

Two biggest things you said that are not said enough. Feed consistency and stitch quality, if you have the room and do a lot of sewing, it’s worth the price of entry 👍🏼

It is silent because it's a servo motor. We use servo motors at school. I don't like the older clutch motor due to the noise. The servo motor only makes a soft noise when you step on the pedal to sew. Unlike the clutch motor that moos like a cow whenever there is power supply, even when you are not stepping on the pedal. The clutch motor therefore consumes more energy due to its nonstop mooing. 😂🐮 This info is for readers who are not aware. 😊 I am ready to go and check my local dealer for this same model. 😍

Domestic machine is for personal purposes with many functions and features. while Industrial machine is for projects in case you want to. It's a heavy duty, low noise & long life. Yes I've been thinking about what do I do with more than 200 stitches and those childish auto-built designs of embroidery which computerized machine has. After watching your video , I made up my mind to buy this. Thank you very much. All points you braught up make sense to me.

You can always make button holes manually. Most sewing that I have used are that good making them anyway. I have a Pfaff 3.2 Expression IDT, and sometimes it’s great, and sometime not. Just depends on material and thickness.

Great video Julie! Quick question, is this the best machine for sewing thick nylon fabrics, like the fabric used for backpacks and sport bags? Or is a heavy duty sewing machine better for that? Also, what about thicker fabrics like denim? Thank you Julie!

Thanks for this review! Very clear and informative. Also useful to know the price range. My Bernina has a good pedal, knee lift and stitch quality but it was quite expensive... for that reason I will use it until it works...hopefully another 10 years at least
@Julija_Gobere6 жыл бұрын
sgnappettas oh, yes - Bernina's are expensive, but they do perform well and lasts long ☺️ In fact, the second machine that I had was an entry-level Bernina and it lasted me for 5 years with great stitch quality 😉

Congratulations on your new machine Julie! My husband is always looking at these machines whenever we go to the shop where I bought mine last year (he worked in manufacturing before he retired) but I decided against it for many reasons. The space issue (I live in an apartment too) and I do want more features. My new machine (Elna Excellence 780) does have a specialized straight stitch function (HP) and offers something similar but has many of the other features I like too. I think for someone in fashion design like you, an industrial machine does make the most sense!
@Julija_Gobere6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Kathleen! You have a very nice machine - I was also looking at Elna Excellence (model 720Pro) before settling for industrial one. Those machines are very reliable and has some really lovely features! P.s. I think that for your machine model you can also buy additionally a knee lift - do you have it? If not, I hingly recommend trying it, it's very comfortable when sewing!
@PsychicKathleen6 жыл бұрын
It did come with a knee lift :) I do love my machine! It was $$ but I use most of the features sewing with all sorts of different and often wiggly fabrics :)

Hello Julie, I 'm a beginner and wanted to get into my own dressmaking. Can you please recommend sewing machines that have good stitch quality. Thank you!
@Julija_Gobere6 жыл бұрын
Dina A Hi Dina! A lot depends on a budget you have. Quite frankly, I wouldn't spend a lot on a first machine, so anything from well known brands (Singer, Brother, Janome and etc.) in price range 120-200 USD range would do a great job. Before getting an industrial machine I used Singer Heavy Duty 4423 and loved it, so I could recommend it based from my experience :) And I would suggest you get a good steam iron - good ironing changes A LOT in sewing quality!
@dinaa45966 жыл бұрын
SewingJulie Thank you so much Julie for your time & reply. I was thinking on getting bernette b35.
@charlclarke97225 жыл бұрын
Brother or janome is better than the new bernina or bernette, i would recomend that you find an older model they are the best.
@Julija_Gobere5 жыл бұрын
@faultroy Hi Dear! Truth be told, my own opinion about Heavy Duty 4423 changed in time, too - in the beginning I loved it; but after a year or two, I began to notice some quality imperfections in stitching that I didn't like. Later, I started to feel like I needed 'an upgrade' machine and this is how I ended up with industrial. I now use Heavy Duty only for buttonholes, but I am not loving them, either. It's not a bad machine, but I would say it's more dedicated for beginners and if you have more experience, you might want to look at other models, too. Hope this answers your question!

Thank you for an informative video. Can you change presser feet on the industrial machine?
@Julija_Gobere6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can change presser feet on the industrial machine - the standard foot comes with the machines already, and I additionally bought a right side foot, left side foot and invisible zipper foot; I am also thinking of buying a foot that creates and sews a bias tape binding in just one seam!
@Susan1937Fisher6 жыл бұрын
I would love to see the bias tape foot when you get it!

I have a USDM antique singer, 1930s, the kind that's all heavy durable metal, and i'm looking to modify it into an industrial-style machine...needs to work on vinyl, leather, upholstery, faux fur, etc with zero digital whizbang gizmos. Also looking for the speeds, my lesbian wife and fashion business partner needs to whip out our '70s inspired genderqueer fashion lines. I have years of relevant technical prowess and connections & money is no object for what I am building. What parts will i need to accomplish this?
