The carrriage is called "Ammendorf", an absolute classic! More than 30000 were build at VEB Waggonbau Ammendorf in Eastern Gemrany for Soviet Railways, and they still can be found running in all of ex-USSR countries. This one received only a few cosmetic changes, even the original signs in Russian can be seen like "Press pedal to flush the water" or "Cold and hot water pipes stop-cocks locations"

I’m actually more impressed with the trains than the flights. Not normally a train guy but there is something nostalgic with sleeper trains. As an Australian I’d love to invite you Noel to check out our two sleeper trains. The Ghan that goes from north to south of the continent and the Indian Pacific that goes from East (Pacific ocean) to West (Indian ocean). Both train journeys go over numerous days and nights. Both have 5 star sleeper and 5 star dining car options. Definitely worth the experience.

This brings back memories. We did the overnight sleeper from Budapest to Bucharest about 7 years ago. I couldn't figure how the journey took so long on the timetable, but as the ancient train never exceeded 30mph the whole way I soon realised. No chance of actual sleeping (party of 4, each with our own compartment) as how the train managed to stay on the tracks I will never know. Dinner was served by a young man who kept bringing bottles of red wine, and helped us drink them. It all got very drunken, but at least I could smoke in this no smoking carriage. Signs everywhere, but ashtrays on the tables! In the morning, at "breakfast" we found our young waiter asleep on the floor under a blanket. He reluctantly arose to serve us. My partner was very brave and ordered an omelette. It arrived looking disgusting. "What's in it?" I asked. "Eggshell mainly" he said. Marvelous views of the Carpathians though.

Just one small suggestion though: instead of sticking with the all-pervasive Western fast food outlets in the wonderful places you visit, why not try the local food in each place? Great opportunity for interaction with fellow travellers and locals, colourful content (entertaining whether you like what you're eating or not..!!), and a chance to broaden your culinary horizons and benefit the local economy! On CS, you’ve got to make sure you’re as close to the middle of the carriage as you can be if you’re a lighter sleeper. It’s much quieter and a bit smoother. Also, you’ll get a better night’s sleep on the highlander going northbound, as you start the journey on the smoother west coast mainline, compared to trying to get to sleep on the jointed tracks of the highlands. After a few times I’m quite used to it, and sleep well now ☺️

That's night trains for you! I've been fortunate enough to do quite a few now - mostly in Eastern Europe but sometimes in Scandinavia - and I absolutely love them. Something about the repetitive clunking and the slight swaying gets me (often an insomniac) to sleep in minutes. And I love being able to lie down and look out of the window while I'm reading. I hope you have a better experience with them in future - they're so much less stressful usually and I genuinely think there's something magical and old-fashioned (but in a good way) about a night train

Quite susprised that a "first" class sleeper wouln't have actual beds. Those carriages likely built in east Germany and woulld have featured proper fold down beds for a very long time. On your ride: the guy "unplugging" the bogies would mean you're right above it at one end of carriage would explain the rougher ride and higher noise vs if you had been in middle of carriage. (but that is because of poor track conditions to begin with). Restaurants rarely make it across track gauge change because they have generators attached to bogies so bogies too hard to swap.
@olivethrush7450

If you want the real deal with changing bogies take the Train from Hook of Holland to Moscow, change bogies in the middle of the night at Minsk. Change trains in Moscow for Trans Sib to Beijing. Change bogies back to standard guage in the middle of the night on Mongolian/Sino border but this time accompanied to Chinese martial music and flashing lights. The common denominator being you always change bogies in the middle of the night. It's what they do! Great series. thanks

Ok in my honest opinion I truly think you are way above Sam Chui and he has millions of followers, your content is by far much better and that isn't because of where you go or what you record it's simply because of who you are and how you show it to your followers, your interested in who ever you see and where ever you go and that makes us feel apart of your journey, I really do think that your one of if not the best travel vlogger out there that is still a genuine, honest hardworking person and what really shows in every single vlog is you enjoy doing what you do and that makes all the difference. P.s I still think you should make some stickers etc saying Approved By Noel Phillips for airlines etc to display with their liveries.😀

Yay we got a loo review. I'd say that's on par with the robin hood line. Bald and bankrupt would be over the moon with that Soviet sink. I'd rather be watching via KZbin though. Half an hour to Nottingham on the robin hood line is long enough to avoid actually needing to use the toilet

Really great video….. did remind me of some fairly ropey European trains back in the 80s…..Italian coaches which kept the wooden boards but forgot the cushioning. 2 favourite bits 1) the loo review for all the wrong reasons ! and 2) background music is just fab !

Ps another comment re changing the wheels reminds me in my youth the Catalan Tango train used to be the only train between France and Spain as it’s wheels were specially designed to change at the border because of gauging. Nowadays you can simply get the TGV from Paris to Barcelona direct. Different Times !

Great video on the soviet train from bucharest to chinisau of course the most intresting part of the video was seeing the carriages being lifted up and them changing the wheels from european standard to russian railway guage. The hotel at the end was quite luxurious and I guess it didn't cost too much to stay in there either

Nope, this train is a curious relic in Romania as well. CFM (Moldovan Railways) can't afford a new gauge changing station in Ungheni (MD), and without a new gauge changing station, they can't make use of more modern rolling stock - so they have to stick to these carriages. They're actually not that old, built sometimes in the 1980s, but based on an ancient design from the '50s. You'll find similar carriages on more rural cross border routes in Ukraine and Belarus for the same reason - lack of money form modern gauge changing equipment. The Romanian railway doesn't really like the situation - these old Moldovan carriages are speed-limited to a "whopping" 100 km/h, making the run slower than any other train on the Bucharest - Iasi route (that's signalled for 120-140 km/h for long distances). But the Moldovans own the train, and Romania doesn't have any gauge changing stations anyway so nothing CFR or any other Romanian operator (also operating on shoestring budgets) could do...

@@frunzaverde1 hey could be worse I think he did a cheap Hungarian train that managed an absolutely "sonic-like" average of 40 km/h...! 😂
