That is their property, some work from home but regardless, property rights are property rights. Trying to guilt life long tax payers into down sizing is wrong.

Even if a persons property is not being used like it should be, why is it anybody's business. If you've worked hard to create your own sanctuary in which you can enjoy retiring in then good on you!

A new small house can cost more than an older larger house, he didn’t seem to mention this. So for many downsizing works against you.

Many retired people have woken up that moving to a regional area is great when they first retire however once their 75+ and the health problems start piling up and there are limited medical services available and they no longer can afford to move back to a major urban centre they have a big problem. If they can no longer drive then they are in real trouble. Many do not want to live in an apartment and a new townhouse in the area they currently live is a similar price to what they can sell their house for.

Local body rates will provide the tax driver soon enough. Single retiree, fixed income vs rates and power? One of those curves is unstoppable, the other is untenable. Is there a genuine public policy problem here? The one I see is monetary - easy money for too long jacks prices.

280 sqm house with 4 bedrooms. A 150 sqm shed and 10 acres. Two people. I paid for it and I want to live in it. The state can naff right off. The problem is not houses, it is simply that New Zealand pays too little because our economy needs severely modernising - it is still much the same as it was 50 years ago and the world has moved on. Even Malta - a tiny island in the Mediterranean - has a silicon chip manufacturing industry. We still rely on meat and wood.....

Worked with someone that was single and lived in a Kianga Ora housing... three bedrooms...had contacts. When my son worked on Kianga Ora houses there were many, particularly single older ladies, usually angry living in multi bedroom houses. How about the mother of many children that distroyed her house, reason, the agency would give her the house (bigger) she demanded. Many angry people, gang members were generally some of the best to work with. As for us general folk, the house I live in is my choice, not the freaking govt. There are couples that want a one/two bedroom on a postage size piece of land and spend their spare time on electronic devices keeping track of their plummeting testosterone levels. Others want the quarter acre plus and plenty of room and have hobbies and actually do sht in their spare time. Such a leftie, biggovt, in your private life, over-reach, concept. Why give these plonkers airtime, you'll have the greenies getting ideas.

Another dreamer, just make more house's that are actually affordable...... extra bedrooms would be great.... but once again affordable. The government would like children to be born....... start with affordable houses, everything gets a little easier after that. And remember the old people aren't working anymore so they need to keep their house's as long as possible so the elderly homes don't bleed them for cash before they pass

Rural families are generally larger than urban families, hence the larger houses... kids can't find jobs or excitement and they go into the city leaving the parents or a sibling behind who maintains the houses (which are difficult to sell) for the future generations... There is no rocket science here. Why would I live in a small rural town where there are no jobs due to the drift to the cities and to sell could mean a loss...
