stop asking me to make videos about ever after high. same with the winx club. no ifs, ands, or buts about it. i have said numerous times i dont care to watch, so quit trying to change my mind.

Exactly! People will preach that the color of your skin doesn't matter, but you're completely correct. Blackness has historically been seen as "dirty" and darker skin is often portrayed as a bad thing. It's not just America either because in Japan, the common "Modern Japanese" beauty standard tends to be "light flawless skin, a slim petite figure, slender legs, and a quiet personality." Hairspray (as you pointed out before) provides an excellent example of what you were saying about Jim Crow laws and the history of swimming pools. When Tracey is interviewing for a spot on the Corny Collins Show, one of her interview questions (fittingly asked by Velma in the stage musical) was "would you swim in an integrated pool?" Tracey answers that she would and that she is all for integration. She doesn't get praised for her response. Instead, she fails the interview. This is very accurate for that time period because white people who supported black people were not treated well. In the case of To Kill A Mockingbird, a white lawyer named Atticus Finch is shunned by the entire town and his children are bullied in school (and later attacked) by the white citizens of the town just because he took a case to defend a black man. It doesn't just stop there either though. I can't say much without spoiling the plot, but the book (and its 1962 film adaptation) shows in vivid detail how rigged the US justice system was in favor of white people through the treatment of the character, Tom (the innocent black man Atticus defended.) I can't remember if the film adaptation included it, but in the book, it also included an example of how biracial people were REALLY treated through the Raymond family (a wealty white man who married a black woman and had kids.)

"I'm really starting to think none of y'all paid attention in social studies class." As a former education major and a former AP student, I can attest that is only partially the case. Yes, there are students who goof off in their history classes, but there is a very disturbing movement nowadays to rewrite history. It's usually not the teachers who are doing it either because even though they plan their lessons, the state's department of education has the authority to police them and can fire them for teaching something (often involving slavery and racism), even if it was true. Previously, teachers were encouraged to get their students thinking critically about situations, but in recent years, educators have been force fed the narrative of "don't teach this to your children because it makes America look bad" by the higher-ups. History teachers in certain states now are forced to downplay topics such as slavery and racism or face losing their jobs. English teachers aren't safe either because if they require their students to read a banned book, even if the book was a classic such as To Kill A Mockingbird or The Great Gatsby (both of which tackle issues of classism and racism), they get fired too. I know this because there were two cases in my state (to my embarrassment) in recent years. In the first case, no one got fired, but a politician made national news because he proposed a state bill that would have completely banned AP US History from classes because "it made America look bad." The second case was much, MUCH worse because not only did the English teacher get fired (she shared a QR code with her students that allowed them to read books the state banned online from the Brooklyn library), but she received death threats and our state superintendent of education is trying to revoke her teaching license. The whole point of advanced placement classes is to make children critically THINK about something. In the case of teaching children about slavery and racism, the point isn't to just go "ZOMG AMERICA IS TEH EVILZ!" The point is to get children to understand that slavery and racism existed, still do today to a certain extent, are completely wrong, and that the reason we learn about them in school is so we can work towards a brighter future. Sorry for going off on a tangent there. I just wanted to add to what you were saying. Anyway, this is a great and educational video. Thank you for sharing it.
@jinx526
@jinx526 Жыл бұрын
@ Elyse Walker Well said! You completely nailed it and I'll add it's incredibly problematic that a lot of schools "reserve" rigorous lessons especially critical thinking to advanced placement classes. Not all students are going to qualify for those classes which means a minority of students are getting an quality education. I think a lot of people don't realize that just because students are in the same school doesn't mean they are receiving equal education.
@bunnychu15
@bunnychu15 Жыл бұрын
@@jinx526 Exactly! Lessons about racism and slavery shouldn't just be reserved for AP classes because children need to understand that those things still exist and WHY those things are bad. AP classes should give more complex lessons on those topics to prepare students for their exams and college. However, they should not be the ONLY classes that teach the lesson because if children don't learn why they're bad, they might grow up with warped views on the topic and history will repeat itself.

It’s really interesting to compare the one drop rule to other policies that ‘defined’ race because they are super contradictory, so it’s obvious that they are meant to support white supremacy. Like, having any Black heritage made someone qualify as Black, but you need to be a minimum of ~6% Indigenous to qualify as Indigenous. The one drop rule was made to extend the supply of enslaved people by defining any children of enslaved Black women and their white captors as Black, while the policy about Indigeneity lets the government limit the people they are obligated to provide resources and benefits to as part of reconciliation and compensation for the land.

When I saw this video I thought of Kipo and the age of wonder beasts. Kipo was 'biracial' but the fandom saw her as black when she looked nothing like a black person. But the black fans supported the show for that reason (I did for Wolf, Benson, and Kipo, plus the story was good too). However, the creator comes out to say Kipo is Korean? And she doesn't even look like that either? I think biracial needs to be seen as its own category. Whenever someone is mixed with black they are black, but they aren't they are biracial. They can identify as black if they want to but they cannot dismiss the other race that makes them biracial.
@devontamosley4487

It really depends on where the biracial person is raised from. If a biracial person for example is half black and half white, but they're raised mostly by their black family and surrounding by black people, they probably identify themselves as black; although if they're raised by their white family and surrounding by white people, they probably identify themselves as neither races and prefer calling themselves as mixed/biracial.

Hi, thank you for explaining this to me because even I was confused! And re: Dolores, I generally refer to her as a half-Black girl because imho Black and half-Black are two different things, a lot of the time people act like being half-Black makes you better than if you were fully Black, and with misogynoir thrown in the picture a lot of Black girls are taught that they’re less pretty than half-Black girls because they’re not mixed, like someone else said in the comments, and too often a role meant for a Black girl especially a darkskin one will go to a half-Black girl, especially a lightskin one, while the same doesn’t happen for boys as often. I’m confused by this logic. Would I be classified as a “white Asian” for having pale skin even though I’m not ethnically European? Then what about my family members who are the same ethnicity as me but have tanner skin? Would they be classified as mixed even though they’re the same ethnicity as me? This is a very narrow way to classify people imo. Could you elaborate more on this because I’ve never seen someone who thought Asian wasn’t a race. That's because the way race worked here was different, we had different categories for different mixing, there was a name for the kid of a white parent and a black parent, or a white parent an an indigenous parent or a black parent and a indigenous parent, etc. The idea was to mix until the kids reached more whiteness, it was seen as desirable, so yeah our concept of mixing does come from a different perspective. I'm not trying to be that girl but I have a BSW and minor in diversity. I've taken classes in sociology, child development, psych and even film studies. I've worked with children for the past 5 years of all ages so my perspective may be different from the masses. 1. Delores doesn't look like the everyday average black woman tho. Even light skinned BW have kinkier hair and blacker features. Delores mom is a white Columbian women with a Black Columbian father she's biracial. Idk why it's taboo to call a biracial person biracial. If I marry Brad or Chad and decide to have his offspring my children will be biracial and I'll let them know all day everyday. My children will not co-opt my identity as a Black woman and some may say I'm doing "too much" or I'm "a hater" but too many times I've seen beautiful black girls pick up a peach crayon and color their skin, dress up as Moana but not Tiana, play exclusively with dolls that don't look like them or they'll longingly look at biracials with the 3c hair and wonder why they have puff balls. When you call biracial people black it can lead to unintended consequences. 2. People will want people that look like Delores, Halle berry, Zoe Saldana and Megan Markle to be black but when they cast these biracials in roles meant for DSBW they wanna cry about colorism and how they aren't giving DSBW desireable roles. Black people ESPECIALLY black women need to gatekeep their identity because people will look at Coco Jones, Doechii, or Baby Tate and think they're "different" looking when they represent most unambiguous Black women from all over the diaspora.

@@esteicy98 A lot of people confuse ethnicity, nationality and race all the time and it's so annoying. Columbian isn't a race. White latins and Black latins. In Columbia they're called Zambos, in Honduras they're called Garifunas, in Brazil they're simply called Afro Brazilian.

but Pepa still isn't white. She's indigenous Colobian like her parents and siblings. The commentor is correct in saying she's white passing. Augustín is white Colombian. And Dolores is a black woman by virtue of being daughter to Felix. Not to mention: Dolores literally does look like an average lightskinned black woman. The whole "half black biracial people aren't black" thing you tried to sneak in there was really gross too. Don't try and frame your prejudice around trying to fight colorism. Trust me, we don't need girls like you on our team.

@@appleapologist Don't think I didn't peep the earlier comment miss mamas. I said EXCLUSIVELY play with dolls that don't look like them. If dark skin Keisha from Houston with 4c hair, and black features is playing with dolls that EXCLUSIVELY look like Elsa, Moana and Delores it could give her an inferiority complex. Honest question: If race has nothing to do with appearance then how do you know when a Black person is Black?

Thank you. Black women do need to gate keep our identity because a lot of biracial want to be white anyway. White people force them to be black along with black men. I'm not with it thoe

Omg when you brought up black cats, it should also be mentioned (if its not obvious already) plenty of white people especially nowadays more often know black cats are fine but will still cry about black people

I like the message of this video a lot, but Dolores isn’t biracial. She is just as mixed as anyone else in the madrigals, which is to say as much as any Colombian and Latino. She is simply an afro Latina meaning that her black features are more prominent (latinos that look like her and her siblings are read as black and their experiences are black). But her dad is fully Colombian / latino and so is her mom. She’s not biracial in the sense that is being described here, cause that would imply Felix and Pepa are monoracial which they clearly aren’t because they are latinos

But I’m confused…isn’t Felix clearly a monoracial Black man? I know there is a lot of mixing in Latin-America, but I’m pretty sure Felix qualifies as “just” Black…hence Dolores, Camilo, and Antonio qualify as biracial/multiracial.

@@harriyanna Yeah that's what I thought too...like yeah most Latios are mixed, but there are Black Latinos, white Latinos, Asian Latinos, indigenous Latinos, etc. I feel like people often say it to erase Black Latines.

@@imthebossmermaid3648 nope Felix is just an afro latino, it’s pretty clear in the movie, not to mention that I have uncles that look like him and they are 100% latino

@@Luenysgo Got it...then why did you say that he's not monoracial? He is? He's a monoracial Black Latino. He's both fully Black and fully Latino. I don't understand. You do realize that Afrolatino=Black person who is Latino, right? Not necessarily mixed, although they can be that as well...once again, I am confusion.
