I skated for a month using Twister Edge 110s. Then I recently found my old Salomon 4x76.5 bought over twenty years ago! I love this setup for stopping and learning tricks. That old boot is so comfortable too with a quick lacing system. I’ve just ordered a set of 80mm wheels. The 110s definitely roll more smoothly but I feel so at home on the old Salomons. I can set up the Salomons in a rocker config for slalom and hockey too.

I think people tend to oversell the improved smoothness of riding on bigger wheels. I never went above 100mm (3x100,) so maybe it would be different if I went bigger, but I don't find there's THAT much of an improvement on rough stuff, and for certain surfaces I find 4 smaller (80/84mm) wheels to be smoother. That includes going over tram lines, and certain types of cobble stones. At very low speed and to-and-from standstill (especially over those blind people bumps etc,) 4 smaller wheels always feel more stable and predictable, which is very useful in busy, European city streets. The benefits I've found to come with bigger wheels is the improved coasting, somewhat greater sense of speed, stability at speed, and less likelihood of tripping over stuff at speed. I've skated 4x80, 4x84, 3x100, and 4x100 and they're all great, just different. Which is why I find it a bit odd when I hear people referring to going up in wheel size as "upgrading".
@whittyskater5 жыл бұрын
Agree with what you are saying here. Bigger wheels are def not an upgrade they are just a different option for people. Depending on the type of skating you want to do bigger wheels maybe be better. For me bigger wheels (110mm) do tend to roll over rough terrain a little better but bigger wheels are def not smoother...you still feel every bump! Thanks for your thoughts buddy. Great insight.

Having so much fun on my 4x90 and 4x80 I STILL haven't got round to trying 3x110. I rule out 3x125 for urban for the reasons you state and seeing others flail around on them before they are ready. You have found your natural video voice, it takes a while but this sounded much less forced than earlier vids - funnily enough James Mackey also just found his after a few years (from someone who knows how difficult engaging narration is to do well). Thank you for another nice video. I also ended up realizing that 4x80 is more practical. Besides the reasons you mentioned, I have 2 more: 1) on cobblestones the 4x80 are much better. There are many cobblestone segments around Prague, so 3x110's "better on rough surface" really depends on surface roughness type 2) sharp turns, slides, stairs are very much better on 4x80

I started out skating on 110mm wheels, but I was primarily skating on bike trails where you don't do much maneuvering or stopping. The bigger wheels for sure will amplify bad posture, but I guess in a way that's a good thing that allows you to focus on improving your form! But really for any size wheel, once you learn to reliably stop on your setup, you have the confidence to skate anywhere!

@WHITTY My 110m triskates forms a natural rocker from my habits. I exclusively only use the drag stop and powerstop. The rocker is the key for me, so I tend to pop in new wheels seperately each of a new session. Its goes down to 90-100-90. This makes undercross and crossovers very easy and swift. I hope this helps who ever is having a hard time turning and doing stops on big wheels.

Nice flow Man! I took my skates on holiday recently to NYC and there was no doubt I was taking my 4x80 FR1s. Part of this was down to familiarity and confidence as I was rolling a city I'd never been to. I can also throw my Sebas on in seconds whereas it takes considerably longer to lace up my Kronos. I’ve only recently purchased my first set of triskates (Kronos 3x100) and as much as I am really enjoying getting to know them, I just have so much more confidence on my Sebas at this point; that may change in the future, however, these things are freakin’ addictive, but I imagine, if I had to choose only one skate setup for the rest of my days, it would be 4x80 for overall versatility.

I personally like bigger wheels mainly cause when I do switch to smaller wheels I have less control of my feet because of how fast I can maneuver with them and it's very jarring to me lol. Since I learned everything in bigger wheels smaller wheels scare the hell out of me specially when I start doing 180's and 360's and jumping gaps my landings be sketchy as hell lol. I do like smaller wheels to roll stairs tho that feels way smoother then with 3 big wheels.

Didn't notice that its harder to accelerate, in fact acceleration progression on these is much nicer I feel like with even a little movement my speed just keeps increasing which is very satisfying compared to 80's. Not sure about running start though, that might be a bit finicky, will see. Weird thing is that even though I didn't tired nearly as close as to on my normal session on 80's, once I took off the skates I was so exhausted. Is it just me or does that make sense to anyone else? I believe FR (which is Seba under a different brand name for legal reasons too long to go into here) made the newer skates wider because of the premium liner range you can use to upgrade your skates. Don’t necessarily quote me on that, but I’ve had this conversation with my usual skate part suppliers and they’ve told me this. Also, the wider FRs are an advantage for me as I have extremely wide feet. You mentioned the frames, but you didn’t include what length the frame is. Are they the 230mm long frame, or the 232mm long frame? Also, do they allow for converting the middle wheel to a rockered setup? I ask because I’m looking for a better triskate frame for my setups (the Powerslide triskate frames I have are far too long and massively restrict turning agility)
@whittyskater4 жыл бұрын
That's very interesting to know about the width of the FR. For me having a narrow foot means the old Seba were a better fit. The length of the FR frame is 230mm. They are not rockerable though i'm afraid. Be careful if you just buy an FR 110mm frame seperate. The ones for sale on locoskates website are slightly longer as the front wheel is pushed a little forward.

Hello, I have the exactly same skates as you, even color is the same! I'm excited when I see someone is using the exactly same skate. I've been thing about getting a 3x110mm frame and wheel set for my SEBA FR1 4x80 because I struggle on uneven surfaces. Did you just replace the 4 wheel frame set with 3 x 110mm wheels set or you bought a new pair? I'm looking into buying a SEBA 3x110mm frame set to put on my FR1, but they are not cheap, so I'm wondering how much did you invest in upgradeing to tri wheelers? I don't skate very fast and happy with the stability of 4x80, how is the stability of this 3 x 110 compare with the 4 x80? what about agility?
@whittyskater4 жыл бұрын
I bought the whole skate when I got 3 x110. Personally I still prefer 4 x80 over 3 x110. I find with the right techniques rolling rough surfaces is perfectly ok with 80 mm wheels. I prefer the control of 4 x 80 as well. I still enjoy 3 x 110 but they will never be my preferred wheel size.
@12dougreed3 жыл бұрын
What would your advice be on wheel size. The problem I have is over here we have some good surfaces but they get messed up with small stones. With even size 80 mm the stones tend to get stuck and jam the wheels, this happens unexpectedly at cruising or high speed ( dangerous) what would you do ? Maybe small wheels?
@whittyskater3 жыл бұрын
Generally bigger wheels will roll through stones better. Personally though I would just stick with 80mm. Just try to adjust how you skate when passing through stones - use the scissor technique.
