Inner Peace - What I Had To Change at 65

What I had to change to live a more peaceful life! Hello, all my friends and I hope you enjoy this conversation about living a more peaceful life. I touch on a lot of different subjects that pertain to a woman over 60....identity, expectations and purpose. I ask you to perhaps list one or 2 women you most admire. I picked up a book called " 100 Voices" and as I read some of the quotes I was comforted, intrigued, and inspired, so I wanted to share this with you this week.
Thank you all for being there and I hope your weekend will be calm and safe. I love you all to the moon and back....I only wish I could sit down with every one of you and talk...you lift me up and enrich my life beyond words.

I just love your videos. 💜⚘ I'm 42 - I've been sober from drinking for almost 1 year now after walking away from a very tumultuous relationship (10 yrs on and off - but I've known him since I was 16 and we had an affair - it wasnt good) I still smoke cigarettes but hopefully quitting soon and finally repairing my relationships with my 2 sons who are 22 & 20 years old. I have those same regrets looking back now like holy shit did I waste my life? But I refuse to keep beating myself up! My sons are so much happier now that I'm home and sober we have fun again. But yes I'm also finding my way - I hope to work on environmental issues this coming year. I love sewing - especially historical clothing- I'm finding so much new joy in my life since leaving the chaos I was sure was love. I agree with just saying what's on your mind and not wait for others to bring it up, if it's on your mind just say it ! We dont have time to waste ! My most inspirational woman in my life is my Gram. My fathers mother, she was so strong, I love her very much. She passed awhile ago but I think of her often - she took care of me when I was lost and made me feel safe. ⚘💜

I have to say that after my Mother passed away at 92 in January, I realize how strong of a woman that she was. She had massive pain in her knee, most people would have been in a wheel chair, but she went out every day on her walker, barely able to move it with no help from anyone. My Father divorced her when I was in 2nd grade, she was devastated, but she made tons of friends, had parties, went out to work every day and remarried. She was almost deaf in the last 5 years of her life, but she had people over for dinner for good conversation, while she pretended to understand what they said with a smile on her face, so happy to be entertaining. I really admire her strength.

I have had quite a life. But 18 years ago a woman came into my life. She found me reaching out to learn about Christ while I was behind bars. She became my mentor, allowed me to follow her as she followed Him. Her name is Lonnie Cunningham-Turner. She ran A Door of Hope ministry for women. Her faithfulness changed my life forever. I have never gone back to the old life. My family has been restored. My life has been restored. Thank you Ms Lonnie💜

So, obviously Ms Lonnie is retired. She left Georgia and moved north to be with family years ago. I lost touch. I don't know if she's with Jesus and now I want to attempt to reach out.

I had the same issue with the alcohol also, I started down the road of going to prison not for a long time but probation violation and I did that two times and I was done.. then I still continued to drink and it really wasn't doing anything for me but keeping me drunk.. now I'm having problems with my knee full of arthritis and being 30 pounds over weight the two Drs. I went to will not perform the knee replacement.. I really hope to hear back from you Debra

Hands down my grandmother meant the world to me! I was lucky to have her live right across the street! She had 10 children; 9 were girls...can you imagine!!! and 1 boy! And she worked full time on her feet all day in a chocolate factory! She made every dinner from scratch, she was no nonsense, but had a great devilish sense of humor! I miss her so much she was awesome!!!! The real deal💕

Expectations, it’s a big one. We raised our two sons and now they have their own life. They don’t call or see us as often as we expect or like them to. Or, we visit them and we at times are invisible to them, we expect so much and get so little. It’s better to change and live without expectations so we don’t constantly get disappointed. We have more time on our hands, we need to fill our own lives and stop resenting others for not being the way we would like them.

It is difficult to lower or completely eliminate the expectations I have for my children (adult). They are, after all, a product of us. Does it mean we failed because they don't care enough to be a part of our life. Or, did we succeed because they are now so very independent.

Corrie ten Boom has impacted my life too. The book and movie about her is called "The Hiding Place". She also wrote about her life growing up, "In My Father's House". Throughout our lives, we go through many seasons/changes. Having a faith in Jesus has carried me through . He has carried me through, actually. I'm now 76 and have been over many bumps in the road, twists and turns I never expected!

I read Corrie’s story along with Anne Frank’s Diary so many years ago . Each story has stayed with me all of these years. Whenever I feel sorry for myself or I’m feeling that life is so hard at the time I remember Corrie’s story and what she went through and I realize how my struggles are very minor. She is also one of my most admired women.

Such a beautiful message. I am always moved by your introspection on what is going on in your life. I lost my only child, my beautiful son 11 years ago this Christmas. I realize that his memory and mine will be gone as time goes on. But we were here and we loved and were loved by others. What more is there! I love my rescue cats, my friends, my family and enjoy the small things in life. As I sit on my deck and look at the lake I count my many blessings. I am recovering from Covid19 after spending time in the hospital. I so admire the many first responders who took care of me. So many brave young women who put my health and needs first. Life is good.

9 months before rosa parks was Claudette Colvin, but because she was an unmarried pregnant teen the NAACP didnt want to use her as their example so they staged their secretary of the NAACP, Rosa Parks, to do what Claudette had done. I dont know how much of a hero Parks was, but Claudette is a true little known civil rights hero.

I agree. ER was (in my opinion) so beautiful. Not in a "make-up" kind of way...just a naturally beautiful girl. BTW, I saw that same documentary on PBS, Mrs. Roosevelt over came a lot, ie, postpartum depression, her husband's infidelity, death of a child...Such a strong woman.

Thanks, Susan! I really needed that. I have just turned 62, and in today's world, we are ancient. Thanks for making me remember that I do have value, and I can still live my dreams. I have been in remission from cancer for 5 years now. I am so thankful for life. The flowers seem a little prettier and the grass a little greener. I want to tell those people who are struggling and feel alone. God is with you and he will bring you through whatever it is you are facing. Tell Desi hi. My Grandmother too; I am 69yrs old and there is not a day goes by that I don't think of her and her love for me. She lost her own mother not long after she was born and was brought up by a stepmother whom only loved her own sons. My grandmother had to go and clean out grates for the the rich people in the big house; before she went to school. She was aged 7yrs, yet she was the most kind loving person I have ever known. The woman who I greatly admire is the Australian doctor Catherine Hamlin who dedicated her life to help young African women damaged by traumatic birth. Dr Hamlin operated on them and fixed them up so their urinary and bowel system did not just leak and those women were rejected by their community and lived a shocking life. Catherine died this year at 93 but she left a wonderful foundation that runs 6 fistula hospitals for women in Ethiopia.

As women, I wish we would embrace the age we are. I am 64, and loving it. I have more courage now than in my 20's or 30's. I am not afraid to try new things, I am not afraid to rid myself of people who bring no joy or happiness. I devoted the first years of my adulthood to my husband, daughters, and my career. I wouldn't change a thing, I love my family. Now, it's time for me to get wings and fly. I'm taking piano lessons, learning a new language. I volunteer at a Senior Center and an animal shelter. The possibilities are endless! I exercise and eat as healthy as possible. Yes, there are a few wrinkles and some things are heading "south" faster than I'd like. I believe happiness and joy are a "choice". Every day I make the decision to be happy. My life is not all unicorns and rainbows, some days it's a stretch to find anything. I keep a "Journal of Joy". A few weeks ago, my entry was"I had a good hair day". LOL The women I admire are women who paved the way for the rest of us. Showed that anything is possible. The only barrier is a failure to dream big! I tell my daughters.... the only people who fail in life, are people who fail to try! Thank you for your channel, I enjoy it so much.

He said stop thinking all these things are going to be and when their not you get sad or mad. I’ve had to deal with this for years. I do get hurt when things don’t go as a thought they would. I was 58 this past saturday and spent the whole weekend alone, partly due to lockdown, but also partly due to being single, partly due to having no children, and partly due to the recent death of the last of my 3 cats. "New dreams for sale". I saw that one day and realized that all the dreams I'd had, that would never come to pass, could be replaced with new dreams. And in that moment I gained strength and peace b/c I quit looking back and had something to look forward to. btw: you are so artistically talented as well as wise. I can see both in your videos. So happy to hear you are thinking of volunteering for animal causes. The voiceless innocents need caring humans to speak for them against cruelty, neglect. All rescue groups and shelters need volunteers so very badly. Dog walkers, brushing cats fur, cleaning cat boxes, playing with the animals, and just Love being shown to them perhaps for the first time in their lives. 💕

I admire a dear friend of mine who at 83 had the courage to emigrate from England to Australia to live with the son she had to give up for adoption 59 years earlier. She was widowed and had no other children here and he really wanted her to be with him. I thought she was so brave and almost two years on she is very happy. We never know how our life can change. Currently, I have strong admiration for Heidi St.John and Candace Owens. For a person of the past, Queen Esther. I went and found an image of the first quote and pinned it; it's a great reminder especially after a divorce, at least for me. I just turned 50 and I get the identity issue. I saw a video about a year and a half ago..and all.i can say here is mother Teresa was born a man..and was called Father Terry. .isaw a photo of the young man and it did look like " her". She was trafficking young children for the Queen..and what better way then to disguise oneself as a kindly ol woman helping the children.people did make comments on this video and said they can verify.that they knew Father Terry..and believed the story was true.other than what I saw and heard I cannot say it's 💯accurate. Hi Susan...other than my mom, I have 2.. I am a nurse and the more I learn about Florence Nightengale the more I admire her. They never taught us in public school she developed the pie chart...she figured out, not a man while in the Crimea that soldiers needed a balanced diet to survive as more died of malnutrition than war wounds. The second woman is Juliette Low the founder of Girl S counts. She was partially death from childhood then unknown to her a piece of rice lodged in her good ear causing terrible infections and ultimately she had worse deafness in that ear but she still started and supported this great organization for girls. She was an iron and other metals artist. She came from a rich family in Georgia, she didn't need to donate her last years to children but she did till her untimely death from breast cancer. I remember Jackie, she was like a queen! I admire most my mom. She would have done anything for her family. Her only aspiration I always thought was to be a homemaker. I wonder what unspoken dreams she had? She also lived through the depression, rationing, wars, caring for my handicapped twin for 25 years and still was optomistic about the next day.

Irene Tovar Jacqueline Kennedy was truly magnificent. Her story is worth reading. She saved Grand Central Station and truly shored up the White House with antiques and mementos of many past presidents and did this with her own campaign for donations.....She was very educated, had a wonderful, respectable accomplished career (before and after her two husbands), and could (honestly) speak 3 or more languages fluently.

Good talk Susan, hello to you and Desi. Yes, those expectations & unrealistic expectations can take us down a negative winding road. Being hopeful is a positive thing. When those negative thoughts come to mind we have to stop them by replacing them. We can control what thoughts stay & we give more time to. Even if you have to sing to stop a thought 😀. Seriously our brains can't do both. We practice replacing those thoughts by having a gate keeper as they creep in. Concentrating on our breathing helps to relax us as we slowly exhale, it can actually slow our heart rate. There are generations of wonderful women who have come before us. I wonder how many prayed for their family's descendants? There are amazing women & men too that came before us, paving the way & inspiring us. We are so fortunate to be in a country with freedoms not only of speech but action. Yes, helping animals is a loving kindness whether supporting rescues, rescuing or advocacy. I admire Mother Teresa, my mother, grandmothers and women in my family all passed away but not forgotten. 💕 Have a blessed week.

I admire my 39 year old daughter for her strength, wisdom, her understanding and her fight, in going through in vitro several times, having to endure pills, patches, injections to become pregnant and be a mommy herself, something that we take for granted getting pregnant but for her was a heart wrenching journey. As her mom helping her through this, other people have absolutely no idea what she put herself through. She delivered a beautiful baby girl 5 years ago and I still get emotional. Her sacrifice, strength and determination is endless. I as her mother admire, and respect her, she taught me a lot

Jane Goodall comes to mind. She passed on the ordinary life to live among and study chimpanzees. For 60 years. What an amazing life she has led. And all the precious animals who loved her and know her. I wonder and hope she goes back to visit them. I'd love to read biographies and share with a group of ladies. Your videos inspire me.

My goodness Susan this is weird, I have 4 grown up kids and my eldest who lives in New York ( I am from Dublin) has hardly lifted the phone to speak to me in the past few years never mind call me on my birthday! I am the person who keeps the contact going but whenever I call he is either with a date or is otherwise busy . It’s very hurtful but a lot of what you have said today makes an awful lot of sense . So entertaining, when I listen to your words of wisdom, I remember my mom that was sick for so many years. That was all my life, Then she lost her legs and yet she was so cheerful. She was still kind and thoughtful, loving and understanding and helped me to reach my goals. She wasn’t a burden to anyone, until she died. I loved her spirit. My mom, who died in 2012, is someone I admire. She was a professional softball player in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League and trained with Babe Zaharias for the 1942 U.S. Olympics track and field team (which was canceled due to World War II). I miss her, like most of us who have lost our mothers. And I greatly admire my cousin Kim, who had such a marvelous career. When she was young, she was much stronger than she realized. She had spunk, enough that she insisted on keeping our last name when she was told that she needed to change it. In the 1950s, young actresses were not allowed to have their own opinions. She is still a resilient, fascinating woman who has spent a lot of time discovering who she is. 🌷

You have lifted me up! 🥰 I want to challenge you to think about the invisible women who make a difference by caring for their families, friends (like you visiting Bill, making a difference in his last days). Some of the biggest difference makers (heroes) are unnoticed by many: the steady mother of Laura Ingalls Wilder, for example. The mother of St. Bernadette, in her extreme poverty, but believing in her daughter’s truth. I used to dream about making a visible difference, being noticed publicly as a change agent; now I focus on living a life unencumbered by the admiration & respect of others. Most admired woman ... My mother! Confined to a wheelchair from polio shortly after giving birth to her first child, she gave birth to seven more children. Never to walk again, never to dance again .... what an amazing woman. I miss her and ashamed I didn’t tell her enough times how AMAZING she was.

Elizabeth Bowes Lyon, the Queen Mother; Queen Elizabeth II 's mother. She saved the monarchy after Edward VIII's abdication and refused to leave London at the the start of WWII. I wrote a paper on her for an organizational leadership course in my MBA program a few years ago. Watch The King's Speech, which also shows another amazing aspect of this woman. Now I'm off to the thrift store to look for and buy that book.

My identity got lost in being a young mother that's what I knew from 19 and 22 then you realize when they go to College, get married you forgot about you along the way. And through divorce are alone. Identity and loop thoughts of "what if" replay over and over. Living in the past memories of raising my kids was my joy and I still live in that. You're so right they move on, I'm still in the past. I have just found interpeace,resently. What I have discovered is I have to be loyal to myself, before anything can be peaceful, in me or around me...things and thought come so naturally and peacefully, it is so amazing to live in peace, life takes on completely new meaning. In a time when I can't even meet an friend for breakfast because of covid and now the election from hell, you have taught me to seek beauty. So, after I voted I went to my first thrift store where I found a tall pierced porcelain vase. At first I rejected it because a vase with holes won't hold water, but then I remembered your twinkle lights and how I've admired them, so I bought that holely vase and filled it with lights and it is now a thing of beauty in what was a dark corner of my home. My Mom was my hero, she went through a lot in her life ,and had very painful rheumatoid arthritis, yet she would always still help others and always would cheer others up with her sweet smile and laughs. She was a Christian Woman and prayed a lot for her family and friends❤️. I miss her dearly, she was my rock.❤️ Thank you for another great video Susan. As always you add value to my week (a week that ended so well, on Saturday, thank goodness). My most admired woman is my mother, who helped tens of thousands of children with special needs as first a teacher, then supervisor, and finally Director of Special Services at a large school system in New Jersey. Second, for me, has always been Eleanor Roosevelt, for all the reasons you shared and more. Both of those women were brilliant, caring, and giving, even though born to privilege. As for animals, I am a fierce animal rights champion. While there are millions of cats and dogs that need our help, there are literally billions of cows, chickens and pigs that are tortured to death from babyhood at factory "farms" run by big agriculture cartels. That is where we need to start. One way is to stop eating those animals. I won't be graphic here, but just a little research and all of us should be appalled at what they are doing. It is horrifying. Love you and Desi, Susan, as always. I am better for knowing you. 👩🏻💖

My Granny was an amazing Proverbs 31 woman. She was filled with joy from the Holy Spirit, she loved gardening, and I remember her always humming hymns as she did her chores. She ministered to those in need by visiting the sick, taking food, praying with them and praying for them. She had so much faith in the Lord and I never saw her sad. From her I've learned that by focusing on worldly things, it's easy to miss God's perfect plan for us.
