Twenty years ago my company sold a ‘tactical’ 870 package that included a Vang Comp barrel. They would lengthen the forcing cone, back-bore all but the muzzle giving our original cylinder choked barrel more of a Skeet or IC constriction, ported, then hard chromed the interior of the barrel. It did tighten the pattern and diminished flyers of all the ammo we tested, but nothing compared to what the Flight Control or Versa Tight wads do to a ‘normal’ barrel.

I know you skipped bird shot because it's a self defense video, but I feel like one of the benefits of the Vang Comp barrel is tightening up bird shot to the point that you can train with it instead of buckshot at some distances. Clearly the buckshot is ridiculously expensive right now, and I think saving on practice ammo is just as much of a reason to get the back boring as reducing the recoil is

I ran Federal Premium Tactical buckshot through a Benelli M3 when I'd just gotten the gun and was patterning different buckshot loads. The difference between Federal's load and everything else I tried was jaw-dropping. Out of a plain, un-comped barrel that gun puts the shot pattern into the second, "4", ring of a TQ-15 target...at 25 yards. I don't know what dark arts Federal harnessed to produce that liad, but I like it!

Rear braking wads, plus plated shot, plus buffering, and depending on specific load a different pellet stack, and reduced velocity. They put all the good stuff in a single shell, and are the only manufacturer that does it.

I have a Vang Comp barrel on my New Haven 600 (Mossberg...long story). It is a full rifled barrel designed for sabot slug large game hunting. I bought it with that barrel so I did not really know what I was getting, but I found it strange that my sabot magnum slugs felt just like the standard buckshot in my other shotgun...till I tried the magnum one in my other shotgun, haha. There is still a lot of recoil. It is a shotgun after all, but it is clearly far less than it would be without the ports.

Cool. I was wondering at the the beginning if you were going to shoot rounds with Flite Control wads and how much difference it would make. Taofleidermouse has done some vids where they seem to make quite a difference. I’m glad to see that borne out here.

Pretty amazing what quality you can get for such a great price. A while ago you made a video on a 1770's Charleville musket, Indian trade. Customized. Would love to see an in-depth video on how some of those old school rifles were customized and personalized. You would have much more knowledge on the subject than myself.

Mossberg used to have 590-A1's, that came with the Vang Comp barrel. Now you have to go to VC, or send your barrel in. In either case... IF you are going to be using a shotty, it's well worth the investment.

My 590A1 is the 18" model with a simple bead sight. I swapped the furniture for Magpul along with their sling and barrel clamp, a high vis aluminum follower and Wolff mag tube spring plus a Surefire mini-scout light (500 Lumens) and that simple setup is my home defense boomstick. Not quite as fancy as this Vang Comp but it's effective enough against zombies I'd wager. :D

I found that Federal 8 pellet reduced recoil rounds several years ago and haven’t looked back. It groups tighter than any buckshot round I have ever fired. Just a tip, when you shoot so many rounds at the same target you can’t really tell how big the patterns are.

Luce was full body width. winchester was around 66-75% BW. (if you only count spread of each shot and not the total spread of five) flite was below 25% BW edit: i know TFM tested flite on longer ranges, would you do a range scaling test with those?

You can buy primed hills, powder, and pumpkin balls (1once.69 cal)and roll your own really cheap. With very minimal equipment. A small base that clamps on the rim and a crumpet that fits on a cordless drill. All you need. And of course you can do buck with shot cups if you want. The pumpkin balls are the cheapest way to go imo.

As loads go, I have some of that Federal flight control. It defiantly gives you a tighter group, and extends the range of your buck shot. I do not use that for everything though. If the shotgun is set-up as a secondary weapon for in home use only, I want more spread because max distance is maybe 5 yards. For a do everything or outside a building shotgun, that flight control is awesome. That is the nice thing about shotguns though. You get to pick different loads for different results on the fly...that is also the annoyance of shotguns as you have a lot more you need to learn, ha.

I did pretty much this same test, however I used Wolf 00 buck, Noble Sport 12 pellet 00 buck, Federal 3" Magnum 15 pellet 00 buck, and Federal flight control. The Noble Sport and the 3" mags recoil and patters were very similar, and stated velocities were close, but the Noble Sport's was slightly higher. The flight control buckshot was the clear winner, however the 12 pellet Noble Sport did everything the 15 pellet 3" mags did but for far less money, and I could fit one more round of it in my Mossberg 500. So the Noble Sport was my go to defense round until I was able to load up on flight control buckshot. The thing I want to know is, why doesn't Federal use the flight control wad in other types of shells, like loads for water fowl or turkey, where range is necessary?

This becomes an argument about what you want from your shotgun. If you're using it for home defence against a probably moving target, quite possibly in low light, you probably want some spread at 15 yards or so. If you're hunting deer, then the slower it spreads the better (you're very unlikely to be lucky enough for a deer to stand 15 yards away). Is shotgun ammo that hardly spreads really better than ammo that does, considering a bit of spread is usually a desirable feature? If you wanted no spread, you'd use a slug... or a rifle.
@Jesses001

15 yards, 45 feet. Most self defense with a shotgun is not going to be outside. All those rounds put a hurt on the target. Of course if you live in a palace or converted bowling alley you might want to go with more reach.

@@pcnorton That's why my Mossberg 500 was loaded with birdshot. I lived in a row house, and the max, I mean max, front door to back, however unlikely, was 10 yards. And neighbors everywhere, as it were. Birdshot ain't punching through those walls. Sheetrock, maybe :). You send it, you own it.

Depends on which school of thought you fall into. There are two fairly distinct groups. One prefers larger, concentric and dense patterns. The argument being it increases hit probability. The other camp prefers consistently tighter patterns. The argument being pellet accountability is necessary and at the distances of a likely home defense shooting pattern size will be relatively minimal even from a basic buckshot load. There is a little more nuance to both positions, but that is the 10,000 ft view.

No surprise to me that Federal FliteControl was the best by far. Nothing else I've ever seen can come close to it. We were able to get it for under a buck a round from TargetSportsUSA pre-Covid. No more. Vang Comp conversions are always impressive. Nice you can go directly to them for the whole thing OOB now. I'd like to see you guys test the Buck Kicker from Kicks Industries in a gun with interchangeable chokes. It claims a 20-22" pattern with any buckshot at 40 yards. It is a choke with an extension that serves as a muzzle brake. I've seen one test so far and it was pretty impressive, but verification is important.

Winchester also makes an Active Duty buckshot that can be found fairly cheap. I’d avoid it. Out of my 1301 by the time you get back to 7-10 yd the pattern is basically on the edges of a torso target.

It's really not worth the $$$. Just shoot the Federal Flight Control 00 or Hornady Versatite 00 out of a stock shotgun with a cylinder bore choke. Either round will pattern just as tight without the Vang Comp treatment. I've ran both out of three stock shotguns with a cylinder bore choke. They both pattern very tightly as advertised. The tight pattern that you see with the Federal Flight Control in the video is a function of how the shot cup is constructed rather than the Vang Comp upgrade.

I know almost all modern shotguns are cylinder bore, but would it be possible to improve those groups (spreads? EDIT: patterns of course, brain fart) with screw-in chokes?
@DWalter.27
@DWalter.27 Жыл бұрын
Part of the magic of the Vang system is they allow the Buckshot to travel down the barrel without denting each pellet as much. Denting causes imperfect flying and opens up spread (part of why 9 pellet buck has fliers FYI). Anyway, a choke would introduce a good bit of denting again. The interesting comparison would be chokes vs Vang Comp. Perhaps Carl can pick up a hunting version of the Maverick 88, one that has a non-cylinder bore, and shoot a comparison. From what I've read online: Some buckshot likes a choke and others hate them. It'll be specific to your gun (not the model, but your specific gun in your hands). Almost all buckshot seems to like Vang (again, gun dependant), and the effects are better than chokes.

I feel like a Maverick 88 is set up right out of the box for defense, and you don't need to send it in, you don't need to do anything to it. That said the Federal Flight Control is magical and wonderful. My point is that you don't need a fancy shotgun, it's a shotgun. All it needs to do is cycle reliably, and you're good to go. A gamer shotgun, on the other hand, is a different animal entirely, but that's a story for another day.

A Maverick 88 has a massive length of pull. I'm 5'6" and can't even reach the pump to run it properly. Also there's no spot for a light or sling, which are crucial home defense accessories

That Federal Flight Control 00 buck with shoot that tight out of a stock shotgun with an 18.5" barrel. A Winchester SXP that I used to own as well as a Benelli M1S90 and a Beretta 1301 Mod 2 that I currently own all shoot the Flite Control 00 very tight, a ragged single hole at 10 yards and barely any spread at 15 yards, with a cylinder bore choke. If you feel confident in a tight paterrn 00 buckshot for defense/protection, just keep your stock shotgun loaded with Flite Control 00 buck. There's no need to send your gun to Vang Comp or buy a completed Vang Comp gun.

I don't understand that flite control non sense. If I double odd buckshot, I want large pattern spreads on my target 😤. And Vang Comped 590a1 is redundant and useless nowadays. With a defender tactical kit for mini shells, you've effectively reduced recoil using mini shells, and with Magpul SGA stock, you have the option to adjust lengh of pull. I know have a 590a1s+ 😁

Mossberg 590A1 18.5" w/ghost ring sights ~$700 Magpul SGA furniture set: ~$100 ~$800 for a gun with the same sights and better furniture for $200 less than the vang comp. Frankly it's not worth the $1000 they're asking especially when you consider you can have your barrel ported after market for around $150. So you can spend less and have the same function and better furniture for less. Nice try but it's simply not worth the asking price.

I have a Vang Comp and I really like it... But, if you want to do some kind of valid comparison you really need 2 identical firearms, one with and one without the Vang Comp treatment in order for this ammo comparison to make any sense. Also, it's kind of known that ported shotguns, like one with the Vang Comp treatment can do weird things with Federal Flight Control ammo. So, it's entirely possible that an untreated barrel would act quite differently. Your short comparison was basically useless.
