In this video we use the 2g-ACM environment to put the IWI Galil ACE 308 to the test, on the clock & in the dirt.
How does this rifle perform?
How does it compete against other rifles, including the majority of 5.56 guns, on the field?

I have actually saw the completly same failure with hirtenberger ammo already multiple times (on BM59 and FAL rifles). They used to sell them here (Czech Republic) for quite cheap money, but definitly not worth it due theese failures. Cheers and nice shooting with Galil, all the best!

Interesting, because IRTV has used Hirtenberger ammo on almost all their 7.62 NATO rifles, and the minimal expectation is that it runs it reliability.

Technically the first iterations of the Galil were Balashnikovs... The creator was born Yisrael Berchenko in Ukraine. When he immigrated to Israel he, by coincidence, changed his surname to Balashnikov. During the development of this weapon he changed it again to Galili so as to sound more Hebrew, and less Russian.

Couple a' 3 things: 1- To reinstall the top cover you just give it a sharp karate chop and it snicks right in. As it wears in the effort required drops to a firm press of the thumb. 2- The Ace is greatly improved with an Mlok rail from either Midwest Industries or RS Regulate. I have the Midwest one, the middle length one that goes out to just past the gas block. It lightens the gun and gives you your bipod flexibility. The Midwest handguard isn't all that expensive either. 3- I had that same exact heinous failure to extract, only with Tula ammo. This was during tge first range session. While very distressing at the time I have since put over 5k rounds on it without issue so, I dunno, I trust mine at this point.
@Finwolven
@Finwolven 4 жыл бұрын
The top cover is evolution from Finnish RK-series design, which have iron sights on top and retain zero pretty well (I didn't have to adjust zero until I field-stripped my rifle and cleaned it, and not always even then). Not surprised the cover's tough to put back on, RK's tended to require a 'firm' hand to get them properly seated. With Galils, the lid latch seems even more extended, so I would be surprised if it was easy to put back on. Fortunately, you don't need to take off the cover for any purpose on the range, usually.

@Roger_Stenning
@Roger_Stenning 4 жыл бұрын
A couple of thoughts regarding the failure to extract / broken casing rim. 1. The round was fairly well stuck in the chamber, requiring inordinate force with a clearing rod to unseat it to free it from the rifle. This suggests as possibly higher than required powder loading, causing the casing to expand more than it should; the rim was therefore the weak point, as it wasn't designed to work against such resistance, which resulted in the extractor ripping off that rim edge. 2. The extractor damaged the rim as the round was being seated, resulting in a weaker than usual rim which sheared under extraction; this doesn't, however, answer the question of why the round stuck in the chamber so firmly, and for this, we return to possibility #1 above. Given that you didn't report any greater than usual recoil impulse when firing that round, I'd say it's likely a combination of the two; a _slightly_ higher powder loading, and a somehow weakened cartridge rim. I'd be interested to know if the extractor shows signs of stress or even fracture, though. Good vid, keep 'em coming :)
@Kaboomf
@Kaboomf 4 жыл бұрын
Possibly soft brass that expanded more than it should, or even a few sand grains kicked up by that muzzle brake. If the tolerance is wide enough to chamber a round with a few tiny sand grains in between brass and steel, when the brass expands you get massively increased friction. Clear closeup pics of the brass from all sides might help analyze further.
@Roger_Stenning

@@Kaboomf Possible, but I'm not convinced; remember that Karl said it was milsurp, and even those have pretty good QC on casings (even the weirdly variable loadings we (British Army) got from India and Pakistan as training ammunition, back in the early 90s, tended to have good casings, even if the ammo as a whole was utterly nutso 😳)

4:14 - With regard to the hand guards on the ACE: I looked it up a while back and it seems to me that all the ACE models from the 8.5" to the 20" barrel models share the exact same hand guard. Which would save IWI on manufacturing costs (having to only make one hand guard for all of its models), but as you said it kinda leaves you short on space with the longer-barrelled models.

KennyCnotG I had an SVT40 do something similar with Chinese 54r. Pulled the rim off and double fed. Ended up having to pound it out with the cleaning rod. In that case I blamed it on a combination of soft steel case, too high a gas setting and poorly finished chamber. As far as this stuff, I’ve shot a fair bit of hirtenberger ball (80s vintage) and never run across issues like this. I would guess that it may have been a bad case and perhaps a poorly finished chamber. Couldn’t say without seeing other pieces of brass.

A couple of comments from a Galil Ace 7.62x39 owner. Check out the Midwest Industries or RS Regulate handguards. They make a small, medium, and long length handguard replacement for the stock handguard that is much thinner and lighter for your hands to wrap around and accepts M-LOK. On the subject of reassembly, there is a trick. You can put the rear of the recoil spring guide up against the rear trunnion right below the guide rails. The positioning can be a little tricky, but once you get the hang of it, it is repeatable. Put the top cover on. Hold the top cover down and pull the charging handle back. You'll feel some force up against your other hand holding the top cover down, but once you pull it back the recoil spring retainer button will pop through the rear dust cover hole.

What I've found with the assembly/disassembly on mine, the takedown button needs a little bit of an assist, just something that can push a little bit further than flush with the dust cover. Reassembling, I've found that it's easier to seat the disassembly button inside the frame, set the dust cover, then rack the slide to put everything in place. The tolerances are indeed pretty tight.

One of the benefits of the HK91's fluted chamber is that it will extract spent brass without the extractor intact. The residual gas pressure is enough to force the case rearward and eject it from the port. They have a huge claw for an extractor anyhow, but it's good to know that the flutes work. That is true for all the G3 clones, too. Never seen any other rifle do it. They are known for their reliability.

The Galil AR is heavier than some 7.62x51 rifles at 4kg, it's unreliable, didn't hold zero, it's heavy, has terrible sights and it's fucking heavy. The reason it didn't hold zero probably had something to do with over 25 years of abuse by conscripts and in its defense, they mostly held up to that, but the rest can't be forgiven. We have a Galil that’s been sitting in our shop for few months, the one we have has the terrible right side charging handle that’s bent upwards for whatever reason. Funny enough the one person we had that was interested in buying it popped off the top cover for whatever reason and changed his mind after seeing what I had to do to get back in place, I seriously had to beat the hell out of it to get it to snap in place.

The muzzle break looks like the ones they used on the 76mm Shermans, that also kicked up so much dust the commander couldn’t see the target. One would think that people would learn

Most people shoot a known distance range, from a bench. Recoil from that brake is great for that..... Not great for the person next to it......(hope they have good hearing protection). And unless you are shooting match(of one form or another), Almost no one shoots prone.... Be a great brake for off hand.... And it is cheap.

I have had a similar issue with my Arsenal SLR 106 shooting brass cased 5.56 from specific manufacturers. My hypothisis is that AK's that have been chambered in non soviet cartridges (5.56 and .308 have a LOT less taper on the case wall than 7.62 and 5.45) will run a LOT better with steel cased ammo. In short, extraction is a lot harder with brass cased strait wall ammunition than it is on steel cased tapered ammunition. my .02, ymmv

I will say there is an easy way to get the dust cover back on. Its a little hard to explain without a demonstration. However, when you get the recoil spring back in, if you place the piece that goes into the rear trunnion right in front of the rear trunnion. Where it is just very slightly trying to go below it rather than into the slot. Put the dust cover on then rack the bolt back, it will pop into place and your ready to go. My friend has one that he does this too and militaryarmschannel shows this in some of his galil and galil ace videos if you need better explaination/demonstration.

this malfunction you had has happened to me on a 7.62x39 n-pap. i chalked it up to sand/dust in the chamber at the time, but i'm not really sure what it was. i was running steel cased tula ammo through it at the time. really interesting and somewhat rare failure from what i've seen with ak-pattern rifles.

Hey Karl, I'm not sure if you'll see this but my Galil ACE in .308 did the same thing with some shitty TulAmmo a while back. When I asked around about it, evidently it's because the chamber is not fluted on the .308 Galil, where as it is on the 5.56 variant. It was recommended that I swap to an adjustable KNS gas piston to remedy the issue, but I haven't done so yet.

Kalashnikov concern announced their own AK 308 Battle rifle. It is quite similar in the concept, except it is made as an AK-12 in 308. They say they will advertise it as a rifle for militaries that still use battle rifles. I've always been interested in how it compares to other battle rifles so this is probably the closest you can get. Compare it with other rifles of that type please)

Noticed that too and was going to comment on it - Ian on Forgotten Weapons mentioned a consistent ejection pattern was the sign of a good gun / good ammo (I forget which, or I imagined it) when talking about a gun a while back, this one just seemed to eject all over the place.

Same thought. The ejection looked wrong, and glad it wasn't just me that noticed. The way I look at it is all things being equal, the ejection pattern should be consistent. The load/fire/eject cycle should be the same range of motions & timing, so should the ejection pattern. If it's not, I guess it's figuring out if that's normal for Galils or if the ammo's inconsistent. Could be a problem with the gas system varying the force applied to the ejector. Would expect a military-derived rifle to tolerate surplus ammo. If our rifles could survive Radway Grot, they should tolerate most ammo.. :p

The Galil Ace (Gen-2), in .308 or 7.62mm NATO, is definitely worth keeping an eye out for. Frankly, I always knew that the Galil-series of rifles was great. It may not exactly have had the best start to it's service life, but give it some time and it will mature really well.

Ever since owning a PTR91, when ever I watch a video reviewing an autoloading rifle, I watch to see how far it chucks cases. I handload, and the fact that that PTR91 would throw the brass into the next state was one of the reasons I didn't like it much.
