I remember that Raider roster was pretty good in August, then trying to play them online with the updated roster was impossible to play with since all their good players were retired or released/traded, you couldn't just move them from the back of the roster to start the way I could with all the giants injured players

Titans defense was awful in 2004 In a 3-week stretch, they allowed 51 to the Colts, 49 to the Chiefs, and 40 to the Raiders. And then they followed that up by having Jake Plummer completely torch them on Christmas for 37 points

And Billy Volek in those first two games had 918 yards, 8 TD’s, and just 1 INT, yet he still took 2 L’s! For like 2 weeks the guy basically looked like one of the greatest QB’s who ever lived, and that was never seen again for the rest of his career.

Thanks for posting. Billy Volek's 2004 season is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. Put up big passing yardage against bad defenses, and Drew Bennett had a senzu bean for like 3 weeks. At the time, I actually thought Volek had a good year filling in for McNair, but he ranked just 21st in both DYAR and DVOA. Still cool to see even it wasn't that great once contextualized. BTW, you should consider spotlighting the 1994 week 4 shootout between the Dolphins/Vikings. Marino and Moon. It's a game where both HOF quarterbacks went off, Vikings almost gave up a 28-0 lead at home, but held on. No one ever seems to talk about that game strangely.

There is a reason Collins was in the NFC championship game with the Panthers, the Super Bowl with the Giants and had a long career as a backup who had playing time on the back end. He had a gun and solid accuracy. He just wasn't a field general.
@wholesomecomment45
@wholesomecomment45 3 жыл бұрын
I mean, he was good but I wouldn't say having 12 more touchdowns than interceptions as accurate imo.
@PaulGaither
@PaulGaither 3 жыл бұрын
@@wholesomecomment45 - Accuracy is ball placement, not a measurement of how many interceptions he threw. Interceptions come from many factors. Tipped balls, dropped balls, poor effort by receivers, great athletic plays by defenders, defenders film study and baiting the QB into a decision, and just flat out making bad decisions. None of that has to do with putting the ball on target when and where it is supposed to be. Bad accuracy is over throwing, under throwing, missing wide, etc. Dan Marino had games where every pass hit his WRs in the hands, but he didn't complete 100% of his passes because of drops. Did that make him less accurate? No. Stat lines tell you the truth, but they don't tell the whole story.

@NYG5
@NYG5 3 жыл бұрын
He wasn't consistently good at reading defenses like the greats of that era, but he also never had all pro offensive lines like the Rams, Patriots, Packers, and Colts did. He had an OK offensive line in 2000 that fell apart in 2001, then a pretty good one in 2002 that waa picked apart by injuries and free agency in 2003. The Raiders also had a garbage offensive line by this point with guys like Lincoln Kennedy retiring. You give him a good offensive line with the 2008 Titans and he passed all over that Ravens defense in the playoffs, until he had a fumbled snap from the backup center and fumbles by Crumpler and White, missed field goals. I think that was the difference when comparing him to the upper levels of QBs, the Peytons and the Bradys rarely ever make that one dumb play per game that you would get with Collins a lot of the time.
@adjr9062
@adjr9062 3 жыл бұрын
Kerry Collins had moments of brilliance like this and had a great, great arm. He also had concrete feet and suffered from Drew Bledsoe syndrome (needs a lot of time in a perfectly clean pocket). He was also super inconsistent, if you look at his year to year performance, you'd see years like this where he balled out, or that one year with the Giants or that one year with the Titans, followed by other years/games where he'd play like straight up dog shit.

Seriously, just watching this as a Raiders fan makes me mad. We were playing an old Warren Sapp as a defensive end...that's why he had 1/2 sack all year going in to this game. I see scrubs like Travian Smith, Stuart Schweigert, Terdell aka "TURDell" Sands, Grant Irons...these were guys expected to be players. Aged guys like Sapp, Ray Buchanan, Ted Washington, Denard Walker...all over the hill. No wonder this defense was hot garbage. Nnamdi Asomugha wasn't quite ready, Charles Woodson was hurt, no pass rushing...just a poo poo platter of past their prime or not good enough on that defensive roster.

If the offensive line didn't fall apart in 2001 and 2003, had a few drops turned into interceptions not happened late in games, his numbers would have been a lot better. 5 TDs in a playoff game and another 4 with a drop in another game, 300 yards against the 2008 Ravens with the team fumbling inside the 20 twice and missing a field goal in a 3 point loss, etc

Drew Bennett had the single season TD reception record for the Titans that year with 11, and AJ Brown finally tied the record in 2020. 2004 was certainly a special year for Bennett, and it is still amazing that he was an undrafted free agent when he became a Titan. Billy Volek will be known for 2 things: Back to back 400 yard games and coming on in relief of Philip Rivers in the 2007 AFC Divisional at Indy vs the Colts.

With Kerry Collins everyone talks about "muh super bowl" and then gloss over the big playoff performances that get overlooked by the team falling apart. 5 TDs against the Vikings, 4 TDs with a drop by Shockey against the 49ers, 300 yards against the 2008 Ravens when the team fumbled and missed kicked the game away. In every postseason he has no business being one and done in.

Derrick mason might just be the most under appreciated receiver in history not to mention his returning skills. God he was overlooked wayyyy too much although he blossomed a lot more when he went to Baltimore the second part of his career.

I guarantee this was billed to be a higher matchup given the Titans were always a legitimate team (they were 11-5 and won a playoff game the previous year) and the Raiders were two seasons removed from their super bowl appearance.

@@lemmiwinks09 You're right, the one in 2007. In this year (2004) they called one game, and Beuerlein called the 58-48 game with Craig Bolerjack the same year, as well.

Calling a fake field goal on 4th and 1 from the 19 yard line with 6 minutes left in a game you’re losing by 7 points is Jeff Fisher in a nut shell. You know he had that play in his back pocket all season and was dying for a chance to bust it out in a big moment. He wanted to coach his way to a win instead of opting for the much, much higher percentage plays from his offense. Passing or throwing probably would’ve both gotten the one yard they needed but Jeff Fisher doesn’t do sure things. Jeff Fisher is vanilla all game every game until the situation calls for it.

Oh I've heard of it. I watched first hand as Billy Volek completely carved up my sorry Raiders defense for almost a 1/2 grand. This was the rare game in which the offense had enough to offset another terrible defensive performance. That's been a theme for the last 18 years...but for some reason, only Derek Carr is responsible for the last seven, not the unit allowing 26.5 ppg in that stretch of time. Shoutout Fresno State though...Volek is the forgotten bridge QB from Trent Dilfer to David Carr and then Derek Carr.
