Inside a calm and minimal modern architectural home located in the seaside town of Eastbourne, Wellington, RK Residence by Seear-Budd Ross incorporates distilled detailing and minimal finishes. Completing interior design and architecture, Seear-Budd Ross has created a family home that offers a calming atmosphere, as well as an interior space filled with distinct characteristics. Designed as two singular volumes, the front of the house is made to incorporate public entertainment and living quarters, whilst the second singular volume holds the private rooms.
Placed between the two volumes, the courtyard provides a moment of transition between each volume and an abundance of natural light. Still and meditative, the design of RK Residence was planned to include sweeping views from the back of the home to the harbour beyond. Whilst following the house tour inside a calm and minimal modern architectural home, the architects have used high-quality materials throughout - including bandsawn flooring and cladding, tumbled paving in the courtyard and honed stone in the kitchen. With locally-sourced timber helping connect the home to its surrounding landscape, the architects have used New Zealand pine on the exterior cladding, whilst the interior employs macrocarpa timber, bringing a unique scent and texture to the home.
Inside a calm and minimal modern architectural home, the architects have worked with Fisher & Paykel to fit the kitchen with appliances that have been refined down to their essence. As such, integrated appliances have been employed inside a calm and minimal modern architectural home to impart a seamless look throughout - including the Fisher & Paykel ovens, integrated fridge and freezer and dishwasher drawers. Furthermore, the stove top and rangehood provides a unified look and supports the open plan entertaining space.
Creating moments of simplicity through refined architectural and design choices, the architects have used the typology of Eastbourne to establish a natural characterisation throughout. Finished with neutral tones, both the exterior and interior reference the coastal surrounds. The architects have imparted a meditative atmosphere for the owners to enjoy for years to come. Acting as a counterpoint holiday home to the clients’ rural home, RK Residence by Seear-Budd Ross is a journey of refinement that begins from the exterior and continues inside a calm and minimal modern architectural home.

Really loved the roof and the ceilings - that roof profile is beautiful. I also love macrocarpa so great to see it used here. The craftsmanship was obvious. It looks like a deeply calming space indeed. A great example of that pared back minimalism indeed. Although as A B says elsewhere in the comments, I would really like to see a mix of other projects too - ones with colour and in styles other than minimalist.

I love how this timber sloped roof is combined with minimalist interiors! The roof is a sculpture in itself. It's a statement. It makes the place warm, so minimalism doesn't feel sterile there at all. One other comment is a bit more critical: Why is the back of the house, with the entire living space exposed to the street? I mean, I get why you wanted to put big windows there, because that is where you get the harbor views but you get no privacy since the space sits flat on the street level. I would've wanted to raise the living floor a bit, maybe a full floor up. I am not sure if zoning requirements prevented it or maybe costs were too prohibitive, but ideally, you would want to be raised above ground level so you can have better harbor views and yet get some privacy as well. It's especially true, since the house is next to a multi-story apartment building.

Hi Tania, I think the pine cladding used is Vulcan cladding by Abodo. I agree it looks great. 😊

I would love to see more projects that incorporate color/vitality/energy and LIFE into their designs. You always feature beautifully executed projects, and often they have the foundation of great landscaping (or mature landscape depending on how long it's been since it was completed) - but the vast majority are tone on tone as far as use of materials are concerned - it's either tons of concrete or tons of beige tones...where are the clients that aren't afraid of color and texture? We NEED THEM to be showcased as well. A home that looks lived in, that has a personality (not garish or cartoonish), is creative, and celebrates vitality is much needed. A home can be on the coast and still have deep, rich colors on the inside - the ocean is FULL of that.

It would be good to see it furnished with real people living in it. Right now it looks a bit dull and predictable. Amazing view though (albeit people from the street will also be able to look inside)

@@user-belen2 I wouldn’t use minimalist to describe dull, neither do I like “more going on in my home”. Far from it. But in my view, there is nothing special or surprising about the interior of this house. That doesn’t make it a bad house, I just don’t find it’s interior particularly special. Might also be the video that others have already commented on

It's supposed to be minimalist. Some people want their homes to be calming and minimalism achieves that.

I think this missed the mark of an inspired minimalist feel. It is a very ordinary looking home with a few ordinary looking furnishings. Looks like people just moved into a slightly renovated home with not enough money to decorate or furnish it properly. It reminds me of some young bachelors first place. Uninspired. Empty isn't the only defining characteristic of minimalist design, they are missing the design element here.

Lol watched this without audio and the product placement was suddenly so obvious. Also, it's great not to hear the usual architect wank-waffle talk. Can just enjoy the design for what it is. Give it a shot.

Usually love these videos, and this place is certainly something special, but this felt slightly lacking in content. We basically got the same two views of the whole house and the main living space. Many of us find joy in understanding how things fit together and how well space has been used. Concentrating on just once interior space felt like a bit of a let down - in effect it could have been a picture rather than a 5 minute video.
