Shows how a Natuzzi sofa is constructed internally and after years of use, how the internal support systems failed causing a sinking seat deck. Viewers should know that Natuzzi pressured us to remove this video. We refused. This problem is not only a Natuzzi problem. Other manufacturers use similar construction techniques. The sinking seat is years of use related by some hefty people. However, it goes without saying that with a more robust internal support structure, this issue may have been avoided.
Here is a link to another KZbin video showing internal construction problems with Natuzzi. • Natuzzi sofa review: N...

wow. thanks for posting this video. anything made these days arent meant to last. its business. I bought some Natuzzi couches at a closing store and paid 20-33% of its value. havent really sat on them yet and therefore I cant make any comments nor can I really say anything about the wood work since its so new at this this time. knowing that Natuzzi "editions" are made cheaply, I will not buy it at 55% off which I had seen at thebay few days ago.

Hi Kevin, your video was very informative and certainly answers some questions to the sagging in our sofa's. We bought Natuzzi's blue velvet sofa and two armchairs from their editions collection in 2017, fast forward to 2024 and the sofa is sagging. We really feel that we are sitting an inch or so lower than when we got it and you have to climb out of the sofa. The webbing was repaired a few years ago after it dislodged but Natuzzi and I suspect it's the webbing that has gone again. I'm not convinced there much craftsmanship in the sofa and wouldn't buy again. Thanks for the video and salutations from the UK!!

Gee whiz...I saw a Natuzzi sofa at Ana's Furniture that I liked a lot! But I've read a lot of complaints of this sort, which is inexcusable for furniture that costs as much as this does. When my wife and I first got together we bought a new leather sofa of unknown origin from some warehouse distributor in the S.F. Bay Area where we live for $400.00. It's still as good eight years later as the day we bought it!

I'm in the middle of ordering parts for my ITALSOFA, sofa But, nice of you to pass on the information that you did. You went further than anyone else. and from some one else I learned there are 4 types of ( suspension's ) used in sofa's 1.) a type criss crossing springs held on to the frame with some kind of strings so many criss crossing if one let loose , you would still be ok as far as getting a sink hole 2) S springs continuous S shap, attached to the frame with little brackets and a fastener I'm in the country and burnt an old 1996 era couch thats what was left S spring on the ground. 3) coil spring set up built much like a mattress type one's 4) this type webbing made of 3 " strapping that criss crosses and is usually fasted to the frame after it turns the corner with a little stretcher solf just for that.

I had a leather sofa that is over 20 years old made by mattress company. It’s mid grade leather, no sag springs, and framed in pine and OSB or plywood. Not the best build quality but still pretty solid. Unfortunately it got tossed out even though it only needed new foam for the seat cushions. I’ll give Natuzzi a hard pass and get a quality Sofa like a Leather sofa co. Sofa, or another couch made with high quality materials that would outlive me.

This is really interesting. Our Natuzzi couches are now 22 years old. Cushions are starting to give way now, leather is worn, but overall impressed it lasted that long. So we are looking at new couches now and Natuzzi is top of the list, however, after all the bad reviews I am reading maybe the quality has gone down over the years?

Just wondering if you have any insight into a Softaly sofa i just got used. It is probably 10 years old maybe. The entire back raises/lifts up - feels like to move into another position. I am reluctant to try and move it into another position without knowing what the purpose of the movablity is. Seems like it might just fold onto the seat area to make it more compact, but wondering if it reclines or folds flat? Any idea?

Kevin, this is excellent info. I had a Natuzzi sectional dating from the 1990s that had this and a furniture repair place in my area (Raleigh NC) replaced the webbing system with a plywood platform. I was not happy with that and we replaced the sectional with a similar style sofa/loveseat. The loveseat is now sagging where I normally sit and needs to be repaired. Are you aware of any craftspeople in North Carolina who could do a proper repair? If not I’m going to attempt to DIY it myself. Thanks in advance.

You're not alone. I continue to hear from people all over the country who have the same issue. I produced the video to show people how we would correct the manufacturer's structural and materials deficiencies. Within a week of my initial posting, I recieved 2 somewhat threatening emails from Natuzzi in Italy demanding that I take the video down as they claim it is disparaging. It felt like I was facng off against the strong arm of the mafia. I told them I would happily remove the video if they could show me one thing that I said in the video that wasn't the truth. They couldn't, so the video is still up and has been viewed around 130,000 times over the last few years.

Kevin, can you please confirm that this is Natuzzi Editions? I have a manufacturing details page from Natuzzi Italia and it claims to be much better engineered than what you have here. For example, it says "The basic shape or uni-body is made from this [solid wood]." Also, "The entire frame is wrapped in Masonite to strengthen it and protect the covering from tearing". Lastly, I don't see the "S" wire suspension system.

I got one used and the most worn spots show what seems to be a waxy coating that looks like it softened and then started slumping. Very strange. Do you think it’s worth refurbishing reupholstering or should I just buy new? The frame has held up really well for 12 years now, but the leather is tearing, However, underneath the cushion and held up pretty well because I think it’s actually Spring supported cushions. Tina Tate there are so many ways that a Nattuzi sofa fails internally that to take all these variables into consideration in doing a video would require a full length documentary. The good news is the architecture inside is very simple and so it should be self evident how to repair. Go to a upholstery supply shop and buy the Perelli webbing. The rest is a staple gun and a screw gun and some wood.

So in other words, the reason my $2,200 Natuzzi sofa is sagging after 10 years of normal use is because they used LDF for a lot of the key structural components, staples/nails instead of screws, and an insufficient number inadequate straps. Nice. The building I live in was also built cheaply by a guy from Italy. I’m seeing a correlation here pertaining to the Italian half of my ancestry...get it done CHEAP but make it look pretty, and don’t worry about longevity or serviceability.

Thank you Kevin. Our Natuzzi set was made in 2005 and has held up fairly well - in only 1 of the seats has the foam collapsed (the one I’ve sat on for 16 years). I’ve just taken the backing off the underside and the structure looks sound. I can’t see any way to remove the strapping although after removing all bolts it looks like the 3 piece seat section (without the arms) is designed to come out. Without further direction I’m leaning toward cutting the webbing for the one end section and buying new foam, then securing the foam in the seat with wood slats or a large piece of plywood. Any comments are appreciated.
@KevinGillan
@KevinGillan 2 жыл бұрын
Good idea, but you're you're better served replacing the webbing, if you have the tools. You'll need a good quality staple puller and decent staple gun driven by compressor. Remove the seat deck as you've discovered. Remove the staples that hold the leather in place. this gives access to the foam and underlying webbing. remove the old webbing and install new. You'll find it on Amazon - Pirelli upholstery webbing, or a upholstery supply shop near you. connect one end with staples and pull taut to connect the other end. Reinstall foam and leather. Your idea will provide structural support, it however will lack the "give" of the webbing so it will feel hard to sit on.

@KevinGillan
@KevinGillan 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Maleka... The problems that causes the collaosed seat deck is not isolated to the single issue. There can be a vareity of ways the structure fails resulting in similar symptoms. So a single video can't show all potential solutions. The root cause is in using inferrior material in construction at the factory. In your case the best solution is to examine the failed components and replace with real wood, not what was used by Natuzzi. Using a hard wood will provide longer life and improve the overall structural integrity of the frame. You may need to buy replacement foam for that foam block that goes on top of the support strut. A well stocked fabric store is a good source.

I've been working on Natuzzi furniture for more then 20 years rebuilding them. It's all crap, doesn't matter if it's made in China or Italy. Poor quality foam that just fails outside the warranty of 1 to 2 years. Crappy particle board frames. Poor quality webbing that, again, fails just out side the warranty. If you weigh less then 150 pounds, then it may last, but it will collapse. Most guys here in Canada weigh more the 200 pounds, so it goes to hell pretty quick. DON'T BUY NATUZZI, IT'S GARBAGE !

And it's not so much having to repair these, it's telling the customer that their 4000 dollar sectional is not that great, the warranty has ran out and they have to have it repaired out of pocket. This 5 seater sectional I'm on now is 3 years old and it's leather is still bran new, but all the foam is shot. New foam is just under 500.00$ for good quality foam, that will last at least 10 to 15 years. And that's my whole sale price, I pass that a long to my customers, I don't make money on that. People still complain though and I don't blame them, but what I don't understand is that no one does any research on a majour purchases. It only takes 20 minutes to go on line and it's all over the internet ???
@KevinGillan
@KevinGillan 6 жыл бұрын
You're right. People tell me all the time... "If only knew..." Part of the problem is the lack of knowledge in the leather furniture retailer community. They lead people to think it's quality by saying "Italian leather furniture." Meanwhile, the majority of Natuzzi pieces are NOT made in Italy, and even if it is, the frame structure, is cheaply made, the webbing is poor quality and the foam lacks long term integrity. This only becomes apparent AFTER the waranty expires.

This is an upholstery project. You'll have open the dust cover to access. Then, release the webbing to access the foam once you're inside the piece. Be sure it's just a foam issue, not structural. Can someone in here recommend a manufacturer that uses best practices in making a leather sofa? Today I spent an hour with an RTG saleswoman and really liked the only Natuzzi sofa in the store. I can't remember the model but it looks similar to the Fedro corner version with power recliners on both ends. It's $3500 with tax and delivery, but checks all the right boxes for me - sans the recliner feature that will never be used due to small pets. Thanks

We don't evaluate manufacturers as a core element of our business. We've never been paid a consulting fee to offer an opinion in this regard. Though we have worked on thousands of pieces over the past 30 years and have drawn conclusions from our experience. If you want a piece that will stand up to the rigors of 20 years or more of active use, then you need to buy from a retailer who represents quality manufacturers and provides excellent customer support. Here is a list of manufacturers for your consideration. It is not all inclusive, rather its a suggested starting point. American: Hancock and Moore Whittemore Sherrill American Leather LeatherCraft Henredon Hickory Bradington Young Century Classic Leather Lexington Arizona Leather European: Ekornes De Sede Roche Bobois W.Schillig B&B Italia Cassina Knoll (American company but main factory is in Italy)

+Kevin Gillan Went back today for a second look at RTG and then saw a real Natuzzi at Baers. But several Natuzzi and RTG reviews have soured me on both. Many thanks for the fast reply and I'll start hunting to see where I can find and audition these brands.

This video is very helpful! Guys, I would also like to mention that he did say the couch was about 10 yrs. old. He is also in the business of refurbishing furniture. Can you imagine if furniture lasted that long. He might not be able to make a living. Remember, this is also a couch that gets used multiple times a day. Some dining chairs don't even last that long before you have to do some kind of adjustment to them. Just want you guys to look at the whole picture before making a decision not to buy this brand of couches based on the fact that it needs repair after 10 years of use. If the couch was not worth saving I'm sure the owner would have tossed it away and got himself something else instead of spending money on it.

You're fortunate that your piece has stood up to the test of time. Not all do.

You have a good point, but I have a feeling this sofa lost its initial comfort long before these repairs were made. The frame construction shown here is lower quality than many $399 fabric sofas I have seen . Putting good leather on such a flimsy frame is a travesty.

Natuzzi couches have top quality leather but the frames are total rubbish. They buy good quality leathers in Italy put them in containers and ship them to Indonesia where they make the couches. Cheap labor doesn't mean bad labor. These people are simply told what to built from and how to do it so it doesn't matter where its made but how it's made. Regards Quality sofas Scotland

So that's the reason why my mom's couch is sagging so badly... Her couch is about 15 years old but started sagging 5 years from when she purchased in 2000. I can understand cracking and peeling of the sofa but not the sagging. My mom's other leather couch from another company is much older but is holding up its shape wonderfully and the leather shows no cracking or peeling, either.

Pft !! That's all I do is fix this junky Natuzzi furniture. The suspension fails just outside the warranty. Claiming a warranty has become such a PITA now too, there is so much paper work and hoops to jump through it costs the company I work for so much money taking photos and typing up the claim, it eats into the profit margin. I'm trying to convince my boss to drop Natuzzi for good and once she does, I will make a serious attempt to put Natuzzi out of business. I have hundreds of incriminating photos and videos of just how bad this crap is. With todays web, it shouldn't take long to educate the public.

Any advice on troubleshooting a Natuzzi power recliner and power seats on a Natuzzi sofa with the motion activation. All three don't work after about 13 years of service. They haven't worked in about 5 years now.

sounds like you have a piece that's not real leather. Out of the Natuzzi factory in China, they make furiture with bicast, a synthetic. It peels.

We purchased a 4 piece set of Natuzzi Jan 2013 to replace our 16 year old Chateau D'Ax set after a house fire. We are EXTREMELY disappointed with the quality of the foam and construction of this set. We are NOT heavy people. I weigh 125 and my husband 165. The cushions were flattened and we sank into the seats after only a few weeks. We have filed a claim with Natuzzi. We will see what they do. Their quality STINKS.

Don't expect much satisfaction from Natuzzi. We have a set that needed repairs not long after we bought them and Natuzzi nor the store stood behind it. We found a good repair person who fixed the set. That said after 2 repairs the set has lasted long enough for my expectations but I would look elsewhere for the next set.

Natuzzi Edition I believe. The sad thing is that is being build the same way regardless of the model.

I repaired mine myself in January. Used Eye hook screws, Hemp rope and 4" Firm Batting. I have pics available. It is much better now as long as their lumber holds up.

All furniture these days is junk unless you want to pay thousands upon thousands and still the quality is not there. I just bought my Natuzzi couch on offerup for 100 bucks so I don't have as much into it as many of you probably do. This construction looks cheap as hell... REAL Italians wouldn't accept this shitty craftsmanship.

Shocked at the poor build quality of Natuzzi... especially as they claim top dollar pricing. ItalSofa is the China made brand...Leather seems OK but structure looks worse than IKEA.

I asked my friend opinion about Natuzzi furniture that was made in China (or any other thing). My friend told me the factories have quality control from the original brand (like Natuzzi, in this case). So since Natuzzi was pretty famous. So I made a regrettable purchase.
