As a Palace fan I really can’t stress enough how misunderstood Roy often is as a coach. The fact he kept us up and established as a serious Premier League team on nothing is impressive enough. But what people often don’t realise is that, when he has the players to play, his teams play brilliant football. Eze & Olise have been playing like world beaters since he returned and the football we’re playing under him at the moment is the best I’ve ever seen from Palace at this level. Fulham and West Brom fans will share similar experiences and he took the former to a Europa league final - beating Juventus 4-1 on the way. An absolutely brilliant and under appreciated manager. Love him.

Not seen much of Palace apart from their match at Forest but saw their win at Leeds and blown away with how good Olise and Eze are. Great template for other teams who aspire to play and survive in the PL without the wealth of the top 4 or 5 clubs.

Crystal Palace appear (from the outside) to be a very well run club, for a club, whose EPL status will always be perilous due to resources. When & if they win something it will mean so much more. Im loss for words for the intelligence hes shown in this interview. He's like walking "experience" Really appreciate the Overlap team for showing us younger fans what a respectable elderly Manager brings to a club. Definitely a breath of fresh air from all the Jose, Klopp and Pep idolizing from the past few years.

What a fascinating conversation from a owner. I no it’s a much lower scale but I’d love my owner John W Henry to speak to someone or the Glazers to see what there plans are but they don’t love the club like Steve Parish loves Palace.
@sherwood9917 Жыл бұрын
Putting the John Henry in the same category as the Glazers is harsh. What this interview has shown is that, unless you are on the inside, you often don't understand what it really takes to run a club.

Absolutely wonderful episode. Listening to Roy has definitely made me relate to raising my children. In my eyes he’s a legend in the sport. He is such a humble human being and very passionate with a true love for the game. When he talked about not yelling at players, it makes me think of the locker room footage we have seen of Arteta screaming and belittling his team. Both managers have absolutely different coaching contrasts.

Palace lucky to have an owner as open as Steve really, the vast majority of PL/FL clubs owners don't do anywhere near the level of public communication he does, and he always seems to be really well spoken. Also would love to see Roy on a longer ~2hr format podcast like Dyche, Howe and a few others have done, he'd certainly have enough to talk about. Seems like such a rational and analytical character as well.

As an Arsenal fan it makes you realise how lucky you are to be able to give a manager time. Patrick Vieira could've turned out to be great for Palace but there's always that fear of relegation on the owners mind, and then they've always got to make sure that if they're going to make a change, they have to do it early enough to give the next manager time, so you never get to have that blip that a lot of managers have, like Arteta had, like even Klopp had this season, because they simply can't risk giving you the next 10 games to get back on track only to realise that it wasn't a blip, because by then they're in a relegation fight. It must be hard for these kind of teams to take that next step because they almost need a stability that isn't guaranteed.
@oniondesu9633 Жыл бұрын
True and not talked about enough. if midtable clubs have a bad season they get relegated, lose their best players and are forced to sack a bunch of staff. If big clubs have a bad season they dont qualify for europe and that's about the only consequence. Understandable for Palace, Bournemouth or Southampton to sack a manager out of panic. But for a club like Chelsea to do it this season seems silly, there was literally no reason to bring lampard in at all.
@MarcoSpeaksNadsat Жыл бұрын
Parish was being diplomatic about Vieira. The football, and by all accounts, his man management, was atrocious. In his first season he relied on Gallagher having a phenomenal season. This season, without Gallagher, he was clueless. By all accounts he wanted to be the player's friend rather than their coach. He didn't push them at all. As a result Palace were 20th in the league for sprints, and ground covered. They became lazy. By the end they were hardly trying. Not only no goals, but not even shots. Vieira did nothing. For some reason he wouldn't pick Eze, which was just bizarre. When Parish tried to contact Vieira about what was going on, he would disappear. Not answer his calls, or meet him. So, he had to go. As Parish said, it wasn't just about results. Maybe Vieira will learn from this for his next job, if he isn't arrogant.
@commentarytalk1446 Жыл бұрын
Not only the relegation is the sharp end but also what Hodgson said: These clubs can be "Use what you've got with minimal transfer options". That's a skill even some "top" managers don't have whereas others get a reputation eg Allardyce, Warnock. So there's probably A LOT of skills that type of manager needs and maybe from gaining experience first?
Nice doc. Thanks. Proud of where Palace are. It hasn't been easy.
