Johnny Harris geography: I traveled to Gibraltrar, in search of Bald and Bankrupt..Gibraltar is a British overseas territory in the Iberian Peninsula that borders Spain. Its geopolitical past and present and position as one of the world's richest places is what makes it unique place worth visiting. The people don't identify as British nor Spanish, they identify as Gibraltarian.. So that begs the question.. How similar to Great Britian is it? Brexit has also been an ongoing issue the last few years. Sir George Rooke captured Gibraltar for the British during the War of the Spanish Succession, and Spain formally ceded it to Britain in 1713 with the signing of the Treaty of Ultrecht. Join me on an adventure as I show you Gibaltar.

Adventure Elliot is a bilingual travel vlogger (English and Spanish) with a particular interest in the Spanish speaking world. I enjoy taking adventures - big or small - and my goal is to show the Spanish speaking world 1 video at a time.
The goal of my channel is simple yet complex: I want to document and share authentic & educational content of anything related to Adventure Travel, Geography, & Language in the Spanish-speaking world. It's kind of a loaded topic, but it allows me to never exhaust my creative outlets. The truth is, I've always been extremely passionate about what I'm doing on my channel, but I never properly documented it when I started adventuring as a younger man in my college years. I've made over 150 KZbin videos in both English and Spanish, and I have aspirations to make 1000s more. If that sounds interesting to you, join the community and follow me along the way.. After all, we're just getting started.

Lovely video, but sorry. One major correction. Gib is a British Overseas territory. It is British, but self governing. Relying on Britain for defence and foreign policy. It is NOT a colony. It is similar in status to the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, Turks & Caicos, Falklands etc, etc. Yes the Spaniards resent it, but they have (you mentioned one in the video) two enclaves in North Africa. Ceuta, and also Melilla. But spot on. Gib is a great place!

As a Brit from the mainland it’s nice to see Gibraltarians proud to be British. In countries like America and France you will see their national flag hoisted everywhere, but in the U.K, apart from government buildings, you hardly see it, because its perceived by some as offensive and racist. This is not right, and we should hoist the Union Jack wherever we want, and feel proud of our nation. 🇬🇧 🇬🇮

Yo main, from a Mexican in California, idk what to say I have many Hispanic friends from Spain and Hispanic America that will disagree and claim as I do Gibraltar, we are not terrorist but we feel attacked by the Anglosphere, unfortunately I have to promote here in California that whatever you do to my Hispanic brothers in Gibraltar I shall do to your Anglo-Saxon brothers in California and I say this breaking my heart because at the end of the day I think we are both Western and should be United but that’s not the case England keeps funding “ Independence “ movements in the Hispanic world we’ve done nothing but lose territory and power to the Anglo-Saxons under the premise of “openness” unfortunately we can’t no more . Brother open your eyes it’s not yours and you won’t stop there:c Like I said unfortunately it will be eye for an eye it would suck if the Hispanic world joined China, Russia , North Korea , Africa and the Arabs against the Anglos but at this point what do we do ?:c
@therickestpicklerick
@therickestpicklerick 5 ай бұрын
@@hugojaime9565 What the fuck are you talking about? As an American, from Texas, "Hispanics" are not a monolith. Hispanics in Texans are very different from Hispanics in Mexico. Hispanics from American are immensely different from Spaniards in Spain. How do I know this? I have lived in Spain. Spaniards do not immediately identify with anyone else but Spaniards. Even Spaniards who are from Tenerife are seen as less from those who live on the peninsula. So, defending your Hispanic brothers in Gibraltar might not be as welcomed or necessary as you may think. Sadly, Spaniards view those who are not pure Spaniard as "Sudacas". How do I know this? I have heard it many times walking through the streets of Barcelona. Second, the issue between the United Kingdom and Spain has been over historic power, mainly from early colonialism as each sought to control, have more power, and influence. The British and Spanish have fought many battles over history. It is not a mystery as to why sentiments exist as they do. The dissolution of Spanish power and influence came at Spain's own hand. The Spanish were not particularly interested in anything else but gold and riches. Once they felt that they could no longer benefit from their colonies, they abandoned them. Why else do you think a majority of their former commonwealth are all independent sovereign states? How dumb do you think Spain felt when they missed the opportunity of oil and trade agreements? Can you now see how such limited perceptions with respect to ego and superiority backfired on the Spanish? Can you now see why the development and promotion of la sistema de las castas (the caste system) was so detrimental and counter-intuitive to their agenda? My point is that Spain does not and will not care about you, ever. You are not Spanish. Even if your grandparents and their grandparents never mixed outside of their Spanish ethnicity, because you were born outside of peninsular Spain, you are seen as less. This is the fact. Why do you think so many internal struggles surfaced in Spanish colonial territories? Why do you think Nueva Espana (New Spain or for American purposes, "Mexico") fought for its independence? Lastly, why do you think Mexico lost Texas, California, Nevada, New Mexico, etc.? It's because Mexico was disorganized and did not know how to manage its territories. Internal fighting and disputes lead to exploits which were capitalized on by the Americans. Americans took advantage of an opportunity, just as they always have. To suggest that your enemy are the Anglos is shortsighted. The reality is that the enemy was Spain, perceptions about race and ethnicity in Spanish territories, and your inability to proactively deal with areas of weakness. These are the facts, and come from an African American who grew up in the hood in Texas, has lived in Spain, has lived in the United Kingdom, and has travelled quite a bit. If you saw me, you wouldn't be able to tell this and that's the shame.

Who wants to go a live in such crowded place? The gossiping must be terrible. Everyone wanting to know the the business of the others. Also there is huge amount of money laundering. Lots of dirty money. Everyone pretending that they are decent when everyone is at it. There is nothing interesting about this place. There are many places like it all over the world. Nature wise there is nothing. Monkeys you find in many places of this world. A tiny hill you also find in many places of the world. This chap with his video is trying to make it appear as if it some special place where it is a common cold of a place.

I used to use Scottish pounds in England all the time, never had a problem. However, I should point out that some places don't refuse to accept Scottish notes due to a 'petty struggle' - it's because you have to cash them separately, which is a pain. In any case, it's different. Scottish banknotes are backed by the UK government for use within the UK - that is, they legally have the status of legal currency. Gibraltar pounds, however, do not have that status. They cannot circulate as currency within the UK, and banks won't accept them.

This was December.. it’s almost always better weather than this. I think 2 full days so one night in a hotel is enough.. but maybe you might like it a lot and enjoy the vibe there and stay for a few more because it’s such a fascinating place. You could also stay in neighboring Spain city la Linea de la Concepcion which is cheaper and just cross the border on foot like me.

Huummm you are touching on a very thorny issue. The British did not capture Gibraltar. In the war of succession, motivated by the lack of succession to the Spanish throne, when the monarch died without successors. Two dynasties vied for the throne; the Habsburgs, from Austria, who until then had ruled Spain, and the Bourbons, from France, who were related to the King of Spain. War broke out and Europe, as well as Spain, was divided into two camps. England supported the succession by the Habsburgs because the Bourbon King in France was already a Bourbon and was wary of one of them acceding to the Spanish throne, which would give a France-Spain alliance great power in Europe. The fact is that when an English fleet approached the vicinity of Gibraltar, the Spanish commander of the fortress, who supported the Habsburgs as well as England, ceded it to the English, on condition that when the war was over it would be returned to Spain. The fact is that when the war ended with the victory of the Bourbons, the English did not return it, so it was never captured. Currently there are several UN resolutions, for it to be returned to Spain, as it was stipulated in the Treaty of Utrecht, I leave a link if anyone is interested in deepening on the subject. In any case, the fact that historically, England has settled in Gibraltar, is as a result from a geostrategic point of view, being between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. This situation does not make much sense today if Spain were not a NATO ally, as with modern weapons the base would not last long. I leave a link in case anyone is interested in going deeper into the subject. www.realinstitutoelcano.org/analisis/gibraltar-y-el-tratado-de-utrecht/

They don't use the "English Pound", they use the Gibraltar Pound. It has its own ISO code of GIP rather than GBP. But it has a 1 for 1 exchange rate with GBP. GBP (with the exception of notes issued in Scotland and Northern Ireland) can be spent in Gibraltar, but GIP is unlikely to be accepted in the UK. They also issue their own currency. Those £10 notes you withdrew look different from £10 notes you would get in the UK.

Car number plates displaying the EU flag will be those first purchased before the implementation of Brexit. Great video, though.
