Sergey Ponomarev is a Russian photographer whose work has taken him to places few Western reporters have been allowed to see.
Over the years, Ponomarev gained rare access to one of Assad’s notorious prisons, documented the Russian Army’s annexation of Crimea, and photographed the Kremlin’s brutal crackdown on pro-Navalny protests.

Putin is poison for Russia's youth. putin is the only person who made thousands of parents' tears fall because of the loss of their beloved child.. millions of younger siblings are sad because they were abandoned by their older siblings Isn't your family more important than a territory??? don't you love your mother more than a lump of land?? do you know for whom the land you fought for desperately in the battlefield??? for your mother??/for your sister/for your father??? and you just realized that you are doing all this silliness just for the fun of that old grandpa named PUTIN.!!! who are said to be animal lovers children lovers womenizer look.....how many thousands of animals he has killed...look at how many lives of children have died pinned to the ruins of buildings, how many millions of children have cried because they lost their parents because of PUTIN!!! Don't you young Russian youths have no mouths to scream!!!!!????? do you have hands and feet to fight??? are you that loser to see your country made sad by parents who are not sane!!!!! think about it, O young Russian youth!!! we can live more relaxed friends ☕ start lining up neither the West nor the Elien will destroy Russia. I'm happy that I'm in my mid sixties now, living in Western Europe. I'm still living a rare dream of human society: a whole lifetime without war and carnage around. This was probably a first for several thousand years in this parts of the World. Unfortunately, it looks like this rare occurrence is slowly coming to an end. Some of the most powerful people in the World simply hate the concept of freedom and peace and are willing to start wars again, simply to stroke their egos, and just in the next but one country there is already a war as brutal as they come.
@wilhelmu
@wilhelmu Жыл бұрын
peace doesn't end magically by itself. peace is created and sustained by the people. the people wasted the peace, and the people created tyranny. the people wage wars now. yes, that means that you and I (even though I'm half your age) are to blame for the current state of events. these powerful people didn't come to power and stay in power by magical or supernatural means. For me, I never even went to elections in my country until evil people came to power and started doing evil things, I took democracy and peace and economic progress for granted.
@jrknsOFF
@jrknsOFF Жыл бұрын
I'm sure it's not really coming to an end in Europe. This war was initiated by a mad and insecure dictator, and for just two reasons: revenge on the country he couldn't keep under his boot, and the complete lack of anything worthwhile to show his country in an attempt to win some voters. Putin is a face everybody is tired of - Bolotnaya protests started in 2011 because Putin took the seat again, after Medvedev, and at that point, a larger amount of people who were dissatisfied with him took to the streets to protest. Later, in 2014, Putin took the opportunity to annex Crimea and fuel propaganda to make some kind conqueror image for him. Then, Putin has completely turned away from his previous rhetoric of democracy and progress, which, among other things, he had been using to fool people into supporting him; his new plan was to play the older generation, to leverage revanchism, to do what every failing dictator does because they have nothing good to present as the results of their rule - found an enemy on the outside and blamed them for all the problems that he himself actually created, and, like any fascist would, filled the media with noise of fear and anger so that nobody could ever have a moment to stop and think. Someone of your age, living in Western Europe, definitely recognizes tones of Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, Salazar's Portugal here, perhaps, and for a good reason - there are now old, obsolete, and unimaginably outdated regimes that have been gone for decades now. Russia, too, is outdated - it's a developing country, and has been for many centuries. The gap between Russia and the countries that comprise the first world may have grown smaller in last several decades, but it surely never sealed; no leas important is the fact that it never sealed in the minds of the people who usurped the power in Russia and have been parasitizing on the country, its allies, and everyone else for over 20 years, while carefully rooting their old and hateful beliefs and principles (or lack thereof, rather) in the minds of the rest of the population. The vast majority of the Russian government, in its each and every form and institution, are either bandits (like Putin and his gang) or happy benefactors. Fortunately for everybody on this planet, Putin is no different from any other dictator in that he's built a personalist regime, either killing his opponents and critics or scaring them to death. Every imaginable circle of his, inner or outer, is comprised entirely of people everyone would call cowards, incompetent fools, criminals. Once Putin, the leader of their gang, is dead, they will either attempt to flee with as much wealth they stole over the years, or turn on each other to try and stay in power, become the power, just to steal even more - and either way results in death of the regime the moment Putin dies, because the entire government of Russia is just a number of pathetic benefactors and perpetrators who could only thrive under a criminal regime like Putin's, and they won't be able to build one on their own, for they lack the courage, ways to fool everyone into supporting them, and any competence, even in the criminal affairs. So, I say let's forward with hope and reasonable optimism. Ukraine will win, and Putin will lose in each and every way as a dictator, his rule will lose, and so will his supporters. Ukraine will grow richer and happier, free at last and hopefully for good, as Russia steps to the post-dictatorship phase of its development like any other failed empires did.

Sergey Ponomarev is not only an incredibly brave journalist; he is an absolutely phenomenal photographer. Every photograph shows so much emotion, and is framed so perfectly. It is difficult to stand out as photojournalist in 2023, when cameras are ubiquitous, people know how to use them by the time they are three years old, and the world is as hyperconnected as it is now. But he manages to stand out with every single photograph he publishes, nearly all of which were taken with substantial risk to his own personal safety.

Dudes, protests are not only happening in Russia and Ukraine. From the recent - they were in France and Moldova. There, too, protests were suppressed. And there is no need to be hypocritical, saying that the suppression of protests in France and Moldova is necessary, but in Russia and Ukraine it is unacceptable. And there is no dark Russia with an evil Putin who wants war just like that, and a bright Europe that always wants only world peace. There is simply geopolitics. A chess game tens and hundreds of years long. Usually the chess pieces just move around the field and the opponents show fake smiles to each other. But when two figures are close and the interests of opposite sides collide at one point, a war begins in that place. And this will continue until the countries have something to share and what to fight for. As long as everyone strives for superiority over others, setting conditions, instead of considering everyone equal to each other and together strive to improve society.

They actually might be. Because the most likely party to threaten an authoritarian government rule is always going to be the people of the country. Equipping police well and paying them well keeps them loyal to the regime and ensures the safety of the government from its people. And coutries like Russia haven't really had any external threats to worry about due to their nuclear arsenal and large size acting as deterrant, so they have been fine with deterioating quality of army equipment to certain extent. Democracies on the other hand don't need such heavily equipped and large police force to keep the people down because the people have a way to throw out a disfunctioning and corrupt government without having to use violence.

I see some of the most heinous things being written about Russians that their orcs subhuman evil people. Russians are just like everybody else. I love what he said that "photography is the eyes of society"! So very true. A photograph doesn't need language to be explained or translated like news does. Photos can go a long way in showing a situation, or the aftermath of a situation! It can also show us what needs to change in this world, and frankly speaking I'd say Putin needs to be the 1st change made to free the Russian people from their state of repression! People pretend like they don't know what's going on, or that as long as it doesn't affect them personally they don't care. BUT... I guarantee when they lay down their heads at night and begin to think... They wonder why all this is happening, and wonder who and how to stop it before it's too late! I grew up with the saying, "There's good and bad of every kind of people." And I know that probably 80%of people do have good intentions for their fellow man . The problem is getting those 80% to stand up and do something. Like he said they take 10% of protesters away, and the others are probably so afraid they just give up. Imagine if the roles were reversed!?!? Then they'd have to give up instead of the protesters!! So come on Russia please be brave and stand up for your fellow man. This thing in Ukraine needs to stop, and only one man can stop it! Dead or alive, he could stop this evil! We just need the right people to stand up and fix it!

Mmm, first offer Russia acceptable terms for ending the conflict, and then we'll discuss it. Why should we Russians capitulate and plunge our country into chaos? No, sorry. I won't allow it. Russians are for peace, but for a peace that will take into account the interests of Russia. You left no other choice to adequate Russians. Not a single adequate Russian will wish his country terrible grief, defeat, which will lead to ten years of reparations, the destruction of the army, the renunciation of nuclear weapons, the taking of power under external control and other horrors of capitulation.

Very sorry to say that but as long as people have something to loose they would think twice before protesting. In today's Russia you risk a lot. You risk your livelihood, your property, your freedom, health and sometimes life. Even if you do not care for yourself you have family members who could be targeted. A head of investigations branch of Navalny's organisation (ACF International) Ivan Zhdanov has to witness from abroad his elderly father getting imprisoned on fake charges. A recent story of a girl being separated from her single father and placed in a youth care center for making an antiwar drawing at school is also telling (father was first detained and then put under house arrest). I often hear accusations from the Ukraininans that Russians who are against the war should start an armed resistance. It's very unlikely to happen or succeed. An organized Ukrainian army increasingly armed by the West is barely holding against the Ru army. What could unorganized unarmed civilians do against a millions-stong repression apparatus armed with the best surveilance and technology. Moreover any armed resistance that would immediately get squashed would play right into Putin's hands ("See, they are arming against us, we need to defend our country!") Another point I hear is that if Ukrainians could achieve victory on the Maidan in 2014, why can't the Russians? The difference is that in Ukraine the consolidation of power never got to such a state as in Russia. In 2014 there was opposition in the Ukrainian parliament, there were major opposition media outlets and large business groups that supported the pro-EU protests. So it wasn't just a grassroots protest. In Russia however the consolidation of power, influence and capital in Putin's hands happened long before major protests took place in 2011 and 2012 and by then there was neither opposition in the parliament, nor media channels independent from the government, nor any largescale business willing to support the protests.

So, it's important for them to remain impartial and allow their viewers to make up their own minds about what they're seeing and reading. It’s because Russians are divided there’s only a handful that actually hate Putin and handful that worship him and the Soviet union and then most who don’t even care about the war and som who see it as an attack on Russian identity done by the west

The one thing about faceless policemen in Russia that it is very important for Russian goverment to protect police privacy. We had a an incident where one protestor opened this little window on a helmet, revealing top-part of the face. After this he (the protestor) was sentenced 3 years in ordinary prison. Guarding police privacy is the way to stimulate agressiveness towards the protest. If their names are unknown then there is no one who will judge them for their doings even after the putin's fall.

How wonderful propaganda is... He showed what he wanted, without mentioning the details that can show all these events from the other side. Navalny, before promoting the idea of a bad government and its replacement, violated no law. He sacked an entire city. He was illegally selling wood from my city and defrauded a small business that was selling this tree. All the rallies he held were illegal and not coordinated with city, and also violated public order and the work of the city. As for Ukraine, it's even easier there. The pro-Russian president was changed to a pro-European one. Ukraine is divided into Eastern and Western. Western Ukraine was and is pro-European, and eastern Ukraine is pro-Russian, so all movements in Europe or Russia led to conflicts between the two sides. Therefore, even now a huge number of Eastern Ukrainians have moved to Russia. It's the same with Crimea, most of them were not against joining Russia, but there were also dissenters, which led to armed actions.

So Vice decided to mount the video in such a way, that when it came to Russian protests in Russia, you decided to put photos from Ukrainian protests with real clashes with special forces in the title photos, and then, use the same photo as quick slides, and when it came to Russian protests, where there were no such clashes as in Ukraine, in order to create a false impression about the nature of those protests, it is interesting
