The 'Customs and Border Protection' scam is one of the most common scams I hear today. We are going to take a very in-depth look at this scam courtesy of the scammers' own CCTV.
This one is particularly shocking because there are kids involved and the scammers even spend their ill-gotten gains on.... well, you'll see.
I got a lot of help from a few people in making this video:

When you are employed they put you through training on how to handle scams or spot one. When I worked at a gas station I wouldn't have hesitated to stop her either because it literally happens everyday. The gas station doesn't want liability or involvement so they train the min wage workers to stop it before it happens.

I mean, it's completely healthy skepticism. Imagine some random guy calls you and says "hey, I can see and hear these guys trying to steal money from this woman I do not know at this location where I am not. I'm not saying exactly how I do this, but you can Google it. Please believe me that I am telling the truth, even though you have no way to verify that it's true. I agree that I wish she had believed him, but she was doing her job by not just going "okay random stranger with apparently no ties to the victim, I'll believe everything you say and send an officer to this location you say she's going to be." What if Jim had been lying, and the officer went there and essentially harassed this woman for no reason? I'd be more worried if she just went "yeah, okay, send a guy there cause some stranger told me to." I prefer the skepticism, it shows she actually cares.

@@jjahms130 WRONG. If a guy calls and asks the cops to go to where a woman is, they need to go NO matter what. Doesn’t make any difference what the reason is that the caller gives. its frustrating and disappointing but at the same time I can understand that there isnt much they can do. Not only is the scam way outside their jurisdiction they also cant really stop her if she is willingly sending her money to them. All they could do was hope to convince her she was being stupid, and that already failed with the store clerk. Plus Im sure its quite odd for them to get a call like this and they mayve thought it was a joke or something. Jim also didnt quite explain how he was in possession of this knowledge very well. I guess he probably didnt want to come right out and say it but "Ive hacked into their systems, can hear their phone calls, and Im trying to stop a scam in progress" mightve helped a bit. Maybe he couldve let the police actually hear the call as he was hearing it in real time? Who knows, she was probably doomed anyway, a fool and her money are easily parted afterall.

No one is condemning an entire people by pointing out the reason for a large portion of bad behavior is bad religious beliefs. Hindus have no pity for the poor. They are taught the poor are as they are due to divine judgement for sins in previous lives. Thus they spit on beggars and feel no remorse. Trying to be in denial about problems like this by saying "not all" is not helpful. It is a serious problem regardless of excuses. And yes, the Catholic system of automatically forgiven sins after trivial superstitious actions like saying "hail Mary" is pretty bad too. At least they don't teach that the poor are evil, but yes, any religion that teaches evil deeds aren't a big deal is in itself an evil religion and will result in evil people doing whatever they please without any shame or fear.

That's one of the advantages of this scam. They can resell her info to another scammer as well. If they have recordings to go with the info on the victim, they can show another scammer how susceptible she is to paranoia and that they never let her figure out she was being scammed. i'd guess that the police can't intervene directly without probably cause or something like that, off of a phone call from a youtuber they're not familiar with. it's exacerbated by how time-sensitive that call was, in the middle of a woman in the act of transferring money to scammers... there is simply too small a window of time for any sort of serious verification process over the phone between a person calling from another continent and a police officer who seems completely unfamiliar with what exactly's going on.

I'm not sure if it would work properly, but explaining to the police something along the lines of "I'm a cyber security specialist and I'm currently trying to defend x person from being scammed and loosing their money. I have access to the scammer's information and their plans" could help out immensely. Instead of sounding so unsure and potentially like stalker. I really like the work Mr.Browning, recently I helped an old lady and her husband from getting scammed at a BTC machine just down the street and they were really unwilling to listen. As sucky as it sounds, using a bit of grandure and fancy wording seems to help well. Explaining it in terms such as "I'm a cyber security specialist trying to stop you from being scammed, no this is not a real phone call and you are in danger" can help greatly. Thankfully after some convincing she ended up leaving and hanging up on them, a good sign I feel - but in the end I just hope it worked out. That dispatcher? Yeah, that's kinda fucked. The field/desk officer he got transferred to though? That guy doesn't really get too much of a say. If he goes without a dispatcher telling him to and it turns out that he's just harassing a lady because her ex-husband called and knew where she was doing grocery shopping then that doesn't look so great on the cop's side either. Ultimately, you've gotta blame the department's policies though. If they're saying they specifically need to call or be called by the victim then that's probably a departmental policy which is a bit rigid when put to use in scenarios like these. That said, I'd be interested to know if this could have been handled as a "wellness check" tipoff... which is generally used when you're worried someone's about to commit self-not-alive-anymore but *might* be a way to wiggle around that policy of the victim having to call? It's probably also a matter of the fact he called the local police department instead of 911, so calls going to the local department probably aren't handled with as much urgency since them being called means the caller doesn't feel like they're in immediate danger. Not saying he should have dialed 911, but I could see there being a different workflow for handling calls between calling local and calling emergency.

@@Bigol_Jimbo had to reply but I dont know about the US or other places, but in Australia at least a "wellness check" is actually more often than not actually just used for elderly or disabled people (Know myself as a disabled person) and it's just more often known to the wider public as just for suicide stuff when it actually isn't. It should actually be more known for what it was designed for in that it's for elderly and disabled folks, especially if you haven't heard from them in a while, to make sure they haven't fallen or haven't had a medical emergency of some kind or so on where they can't get to the phone but are stuck or at risk. I've had it happen personally, when I think I had a cardiovascular syncope & seizure once that was really bad (they're an every day part of my cardiovascular condition but this 1 wasn't typical & very severe & long lasting), and either just b4 it or after I was too out of it to make sense to friends online, then stopped responding altogether so they asked for a wellness check on me. Memory is spotty for obvious reasons lol. (this is another reason in Aus we have a type of system where the emergency services are aware of those of us with chronic illness/disability etc that can have complications where our life is at risk & anytime a wellness check is called for, there's never any questions asked except to get more info on the way. As well as we have along with that system a type of "emergency house key" system where we have a tiny secure and hidden safe with a code that only is on file for emergency services for those exact situations & medical ones. Again this is in Australia so might not be anywhere else. But it's commonly what people ask for for when elderly people fall over and can't get back up. Of course not saying shouldn't be for suicide check but I'm more saying I wish it was more known about an option for people as this 100% would have been the perfect use case for it (she's not thinking straight and likely older etc) but more so had to say something so if anyone out there every not hears from their disabled, chronically ill, sick or elderly family, friend, etc. You know this is a completely valid option out there, and don't be ashamed to use it, as you could genuinely save a life, or just even make sure they're okay and show them you care, & you can even ask for emergency services to make it anonymous if you know they may not take it well and it's on file or close to them likely they will if you explain it may not go over well. But you can also call this if you're aware they're being scammed too as its completely part of it that it's a risk to the person especially if they're already at risk. Sorry, turned out longer than I meant it too, I'll get off my box now lol. Tho ppl let me know if maybe it's not taken as seriously or different in your country if you have first hand experience, as I'm curious. Plus it may help ppl like the scambaiters help in the future too, knowing this kind of info, I hope!

This is so frustrating. My Dad got scammed and they took £80k from him. He wouldn't believe me that it was a scam and just carried on. I can honestly say that this is the most frustrating thing that has ever happened in my life. It's only when I called the police and they paid him a visit that he actually started to believe it was a scam.

That's why they target older people - they are set in their ways and think everything they do is correct - no-one, not even their children, can convince them otherwise. I hope I'm not like that when I get old...

@@Pacmanfan-po9rn Over a period of about a year and a half. Pretended to be a lawyer that needed investment in a court case. The longer it went on, the more my dad wanted to believe it was real. Sunk-cost fallacy - chasing the losses. He ended up giving him all his savings, getting a £20K bank loan (for 'home improvements') and withdrawing £9k in cash from his credit card.
