Every major city in Venezuela has some bubble places but Caracas itself is a bubble compared to other cities, specially the ones that are far away from Caracas (like Maracaibo, which is very deteriorated and you can feel the crisis a lot more but even there you can find alternative realities).
@drewbinsky3 жыл бұрын

I live in a town which is 100km away from Maracaibo. I used to travel almost every weekend to the city of Maracaibo to hang out with my friends, go to the cinema, buy stuff, run errands, doctor’s visit or whatever, and that was a normal thing until 2015-2016 but right now it’s so hard, expensive and even dangerous (harsh road conditions and carjacking in the road). I finally went after almost a year to Maracaibo with my sisters to run some important errands and we spent $700 in just 3 days (including $175 in 120 liters of gasoline and $240 in a kinda deficient 4 star hotel for $80 per night). Not to mention that crisis in this town is waaaaay worst than Maracaibo. When I finally arrived to Maracaibo I felt what people from Maracaibo feel when they go to Caracas, so you can imagine how worst it is.

However, it’s also sad that so many people don’t have access to supermarkets like what you showed in this video, nor can they afford most of the items in it. Neighborhoods with huge houses, European cars that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, luxurious country clubs where rich kids get to ride horses that cost an insane amount of money, Japanese restaurants that charge at least 50-60 dollars per person and so on. All that just a block away - or even less - from where people lived in tin shacks. These countries give a whole new meaning to corruption. Such a shame.

I've met shoeshiners in Guadalajara, Mexico that take home around $15 a day on a normal one ($300 MXN), and if they work let's say 25 days a month, then that's 7500 MXN ($375 a month). Like you could go to a fancy restaurant with $5 or less, the situation was already pretty bad by that time but if you had US dollars in your pocket you could live like a king with $200 or less. Right now, due to hyperinflation you need at least $1000 or more to buy the same things that you could buy with a 100-200 USD years ago.

that’s not how hyperinflation works hyperinflation affects the domestic currency
@arthuroantonio3 жыл бұрын
@@rooksman64 no, it does affect the USD internal purchasing capacity as well. This doesn’t mean that there is inflation expressed in USD, but rather in bolívares. Before the hyperinflation, the devaluation of the domestic currency was higher and more aggressive than inflation. This means that even when the prices expressed in the domestic currency were increasing rapidly, the USD increased more aggressively against the bolívar, which caused the USD purchase capacity to increase against domestic prices. Once hyperinflation started, people started to use the USD as a purchase method, hyperinflation became way more aggressive than the demand of dollars, and prices started to increase in USD as well. So yes, hyperinflation affects the purchase of power of all the instruments of exchange used in society. This doesn’t mean that there is internal inflation of USD caused by the local government, that is impossible since there is no way that the local government can ever print a single dollar, but rather hyperinflation caused by excessive printing of the domestic currency that is making the prices to rise faster and more aggressively than the exchange rate between the VEF and USD.

Kind of sad that the “ultra rich” lifestyle in Venezuela is accessible for most middle class Americans
@DisHappah3 жыл бұрын

not quite... I was middle normal class in Venezuela yet we lived in a spacious 3 bedroom apartment and (this might be a littler higher) we had access to a "club" which was a facility with pools, restaurants, party rooms, etc. that many go for a weekend getaway inside the city. When I emigrated to North America, I realized that THOSE things (among others) are exclusively available to wealthy people... You see how middle class in USA or Canada live and most live in 1 bedrooms apartments and those clubs are only for very millionaire people, while the rest has to go to community parks (which is totally fine, but just in terms of comparison). Even things that you take for granted in my home country like In-suite Washing/Dryer machine, are considered "luxury" items exclusive for Condos... Of course, on the other hand, it's the trade off you make for living in a more stable country with opportunities of work, etc... Just pointing out that that was something that really struck me when I moved.
@g3toutth3way3 жыл бұрын
@@antonk5414 middle class in the United States don’t live in one bedroom apartments. The mean salary of an American is around $55000, median is lower but regardless, I can assure you many Americans have access to pools and restaurants. My original point was most middle class Americans CERTAINLY have access to all the restaurants Drew found. Likewise, that “nice” sushi restaurant, that had a terrible concept and design, could be found in every mall in the metropolitan area of any major city in the United States.
@antonk54143 жыл бұрын
@@g3toutth3way I agree on that restaurant point... It's common to find that in US. Yeah access to pools and restaurants for sure, just not those "private" clubs complexes is what I meant. However, on 55k salary, depends which city you live, how expensive it is and if you're a family and have a higher income between the two. I live in Toronto (which is almost as expensive as NYC) on a 55k salary (converted from CAD) and I can assure you that 60% people live in apartments/condos that cost around 2000$ a month (which is almost half of a paycheck) cause they can't afford more, unless you live with a partner or roomate. And houses are 1 million dollar and up... Of course, if you talk about smaller cities and towns... I guess with that salary or a combined income you could afford much bigger places.

While I was studying abroad in Japan during college in 2017 I distinctly remember boarding a train in Kyoto and one of the ads in the train car was from the "Pure Michigan" campaign that was ran a few years back for tourism in the state. I'm Venezuelan, when I lived there 15 years ago, nightclubs required you to buy a full bottle of alcohol up front, the price was 5-10 times that of the retail price in liquor stores, I asked one of the owners once why it was so expensive he just said "This keeps the monkeys out" which is the derogatory term for poor people in Venezuela. The class differences have only accentuated with socialism, it serves them really well.

Love the videos Drew. I hope that some day you could make a video explaining how easy it is for you to travel as a white man. I really don't mean to offend anyone but sometimes as a woman you cannot go everywhere.
@oscarbear74983 жыл бұрын
I think if you are wanting to travel as a women you shouldn't let that stop you. Yes a white women can be very noticeable, but you don't have to so attractive. By that I mean if you dress humble you won't be so noticeable or ignored completely. As a white guy I too don't go everywhere alone, I take caution and if I want to go somewhere I think is sketchy I take a local or friend and dress humble. I still avoid bars and clubs even as a guy when I travel alone as I am cautious that I might attract the wrong women who will drug me, or be the girl friend of cartel. Not knowing the area is a big disadvantage so it's important to know locals to inform you on how the local culture works. Just remember that most people are the same everywhere having same problems just at different prices. being able to blend in the culture is your most valuable weapon in staying safe. Camouflage as best you can even in your town is good to do for safe measure.

I am 60 and have been to 67 countries. I am 5’10, buxom and blonde like you. I am hard to miss and tower over many people in many countries, so I can not help stand our. It absolutely IS harder for us, BUT the other person remarking is correct. The old saying “When in Rome? Do as the Romans?” Dress as their women dress and it will be fine. If it is a sketchy place… pay for a driver/bodyguard/interpreter assuring him of a lavish tip if all goes well. The Internet did not exist for a lot of my life, and not having followers on KZbin offering to meet Drew and show him around, I had to rely on paid people sometimes. I don’t know your Nationality, but I would suggest never shorts, almost no cleavage, dress modestly. If they cloak or they veil you do it too and they will welcome you with open arms and be so delighted you are showing respect for their modest values. If possible travel with a buddy, make friends who may be friends with people in a place you want to go. They can call ahead and you will have new friends If you are American, do not speak loud, do not criticize out loud and do not complain. So many Americans are Horrible travelers. I only found Drew’s channel a month ago. He is charming, enthusiastic, friendly and always finds something to compliment. If only ALL travelers acted that way!!! Bon Voyage! Enjoy!🌎

@@annieseaside wow you are full of wisdom, and 100% correct. That is alot of countries I'm 26 and just been to a few. I would love to talk to someone like yourself as see what your adventures were like😊 I like you try and show its not impossible for women to travel. Alot of my friends believe that , that because they are girls its impossible. I see it alot in America girls have this idea because of the movie taken, and so many scary movies. I think alot of women wouldn't want to adapt to the environment as a form of..idk protest or rebellious nature in US. Hope the girl from this comment will read. Even I a US latino when in Central America adapt to the environment, yes 99% of the time it's not even needed but since I am not familiar I don't take chances. I noticed traveling people always try to help and are in love to talk to a travel because it's intresting. My plan is alway make friends in the country as fast as possible, and build a network of what the environment is. People will tell you immediately the areas not to go to, and what risks there are. Most of the time I've notice people feel the need to protect me since I am not from the area. Which is more comfort and protection than I get back home haha. I also try not to approach or flirt with women in unknown areas because you never know, and form what I've noticed 9/10 a fight will be over a girl lol A simple little fight that seems like no big deal could be a gang member's brother. Even if the girl is all flirty could be a trap to get you naked, and robbed. Sounds funny but easy trap. Even in groups of people, so you don't stick out stand close to a group, or make small talk, your basically invisible like that. Standing alone is something I don't do , I rather move like I'm an undercover spy trying to fool the locals I'm local😂 Basically camouflage , just like for animals is the best defense.
