I actually liked Scrappy as a kid. I thought he was cute, and it was funny seeing this tiny puppy being the most courageous of the group. But looking at this, it makes sense on why so many hated him. But it looks like HE was never the problem. He was a symptom of the problem. That being the company just used way too much of him in his initial release. It kind of reminds me of the hate the kid actor got when he played Anakin Skywalker. The kid was never the problem, nor his acting. But the people who directed him and the writing surrounding him. But people decided to attack that little boy mercilessly. Its really sad (and in the second case, unforgivable).

Scrappy-Doo could’ve been a great character, had a longer and better career, and not become a villain, if the creators had handled him well. Like Inside A Mind said, "Scrappy-Doo was not the problem of the show, it was how the creator(s) handled him that became the problem." I say this with all do respect. I feel like the hate for Scrappy is uncalled for, because people don’t realize that it’s not the character, but the creator(s) that are responsible for the character’s downfall. Not only that, but Scrappy was enjoyable at one point.
@probro98986 жыл бұрын
He's right, there are really only two jokes about Scrappy: (i) he believes he is invincible and (ii) he never sees that "Uncle Scooby" is actually a coward. The combination was funny, but not enough to keep him going as a regular character. If he had popped up maybe 2 or 3 times a season, I believe he would now be universally loved.

I felt sorry for the lil scrap, his story and the article ends with him heading to Canada changing his identity. (I put Droopy the dog in the article, he gave Scrappy his fake IDs.) “ What happened to the pup named Scrappy Doo? No one knows. The dog he is now is no longer that curious and chipper puppy. Even the part where they copied traits from Fred, Daphne and Velma into Scrappy COULD have worked and made for some good character development IF it was due to Scrappy deliberately emulating each of them just like he does with his Uncle Scooby. Have him be a big fan of Mystery Inc. as a whole, raised on exciting, exaggerated stories of their adventures, and when he finally gets to join the team he starts trying to come up with plans and traps like Fred, to be clever and observant like Velma, and to have style and improvise while captured like Daphne. And his attempts to be like them would have mixed to disastrous results, giving him a rude awakening and helping him to grow and build an identity of his own.

Thank you so much for this video. The only time I watched Scrappy as a kid was those three TV movies in the 80s and he was great in those movies. I was pretty disgusted with what they did to him in the 2002 film and shocked to find out how much hate there was and is for them. He always had the potential to be a great character but your definitely right that the makers of the show messed it all up for him with their bad story decisions. Instead of owning up and fixing his character, they allowed James Gunn to throw him under the bus and turn him into an overblown hated character. The hate really needs to stop and people need to look back and see where the real problems were. I hope one day they do Scrappy right and make him what he was suppose to be in the first place. Keep up the good work!

Dude, you need to become a writer to save Scrappy. I love your idea. Bring back Scrappy and play with the irony of how a brave little pup idolizes his cowardly uncle. Give some reasons to why he looks up to his uncle. Honestly, my real complaint about Scrappy was that the whole idea of Scooby-Doo is that these are characters terrified of these monsters and to have a character that is brave just doesn't feel right. However, even when I was a kid, I kind of liked Scrappy. Well, I bet you would do a great job at saving Scrappy as a writer and thank you for this amazing video! As a Scooby-Doo fan, it was interesting to see some of Scooby-Doo's dark production history.

Bring back Scrappy, make him a fully grown spy dog who helps the U.S government hunt down terrorists, make the show really dark and surreal, and give him a backstory explaining that his mother told him Puppy Power were magic words that make little dogs invincible so he'd be brave enough to sleep during a thunderstorm.

Unpopular opinion, but I think he was only a bad character in those first one or two seasons, especially after the show became a Three Stooges knock-off with just Shaggy and the Doos. Once they brought back Daphne and gave the show the theme that sounds like Thriller, the show, and Scrappy, got a lot better
@indigoblack3966 жыл бұрын
Scrappy Doo never annoyed me growing up. Even now after all of these years I still don't find him annoying. I never got why people seemed to rag on this character so much, but this was defiantly insightful. I hope that one day Scrappy at least gets another shot on the screen. Even if it's for aTV movie he deserves at least one new incarnation. Heck, I think it would be kind of cool if they brought him back as a young adult. It would play around with how long this show has been running in an interesting way and it would give the creators a lot of freedom with the character. They can rework the character however they want and explore a lot of new, interesting character dynamics within the group. Though please, don't make him spout old memes, be drenched in teenage angst, and have him be glued to his phone 24/7. That would be a nightmare no one wants....O_o

The one thing I wanna see in Scrappy doo is when he gets really into danger and scared. That the monster said that his uncle is not a hero, but a coward and same goes for you Scrappy doo. Then Scrappy would cry and say that's not true, my uncle fought many monsters like you and he overcome them. Scooby of course hears it and yet is still frighten. But when the time comes where the monster his about to hurt his nephew, Scooby gets angry and suddenly stands before him with a mighty growl to never been seen that scooby gets angry for once. Then Scrappy joins the growl and chase the monster away. Would be awesome if the monster is a hybrid with wolf/monster*?* But overal. I would like to see some bonding happen. Like Scrappy saying to scooby he is the father he never had, cause perhaps Scrappy is actually an orphan and never met his father. But i'm not sure this has popped up to happen, but overal I would love to see some family bonding between them. Cause I think that's what's missing. A bit of a family moments.

I'm just happy that the "Scooby Apocalypse" comic seems to be redeeming the character of Scrappy in the eyes of a few people. I grew up in the 90's, so I was exposed to pre-, peri- and post-Scrappy "Scooby Doo", and honestly, he still holds a special place in my heart. It wasn't until around the era of "Mystery Incorporated" (2010-2013) that I even realized people hated Scrappy. I remembered watching the 2002 movie when I was 8 and crying because 1, I was a pussy and those demons were scary, and 2, because they'd made one of my favorite characters the villain. I hope one day the franchise welcomes Scrappy back. He can be toned down in the modern era to make him less grating, while still keeping his youthful energy and differentiating him from the others.
@Cosplaythief6 жыл бұрын
The franchise will never get over itself until it breaks the meme cycle that is hating Scrappy. That and for them it's easier to hate Scrappy than to admit that they didn't know how to write the show correctly back in the days. It's like saying " it's not our fault, it's the character's fault that the show sucked". And everyone is enabling this mindset so Scrappy will never evolve. Unless a new writer actually decides to tackle the issue and not go for the cheap easy gag with Scrappy.
@WhiteRaven6966 жыл бұрын

I do like Scrappy. He actually fights the monster that the Scooby-Doo and the gang tries to find instead of running away. I mean what do they expect to happen when you find the monster they are suppose or expect to find... run or try to capture it? Scooby-Doo and the gang often outnumber the monster 5-1... 6 if you include Scrappy... they can take the one monster that is often in a costume.
@RickyUzumaki9936 жыл бұрын

@WhiteRaven6966 жыл бұрын
To be fair, no one let Scrappy fight the monsters because he was canonically born like a day or two before he joined the gang. I wouldn't let a 2 day old baby fight a crook with a gun. And honestly, even now in the 2010's when Daphne is a certified black belt, she still doesn't fight the monsters, she runs away like the others do. So having a member that fights the monster would kind of defeat the point of solving the mystery, unless they fail or don't even get the chance to fight, like Scrappy.

Yet was never aware that his Uncle is such an infamous coward due to how much he looked up to him.
@SladeBallard6 жыл бұрын
scrappy is another case of the "nickelback syndrome" where people on the internet collectively decide to make fun of a thing and over-exaggerate its bad traits as completely awful and detestable, to the point of mob mentality, so when an outsider comes in and hears about all this hatred, they instantly start hating as well to fit in. I was never into scooby-doo that much, but from what I remembered from my childhood I didn't have any issues with scrappy, I even liked him. it wasn't until the internet days when I found out how bad he was supposedly. I've always found it hypocritical of WB to joke about him when it was them who killed him. people see it as self-aware humor, but to me it's like they don't want to admit their mistakes and just join the internet's opinion to call their attention.

I'm just going to be honest despite the possible backlash. I actually like Scrappy & I really enjoyed the old Scooby movies, especially the ones with actual monsters. I have many fond memories of watching them. The reason being that it makes for a great change of pace when put alongside all the non-supernatural stuff. I also really freaking HATED the 1st Live-Action Scooby Movie, mainly because of what they did to Scrappy & how the gang treated him! I really lost a lot of respect for them then. Sure, he could be annoying at times, but I liked that feisty get-up-and-go he had going on. I really want to see a reincarnation happen because of all the ridiculously overblown hate he's getting. Only, I want to see it done right! Personally, I think the best time to do so would've been during the "What's New Scooby Doo" Series, because that was when characters were gaining new traits. Like Daphne & her martial arts & ability to MacGyver together a solution with the stuff inside her purse & how it later turned out that Velma possessed an extreme fear of clowns while Shaggy, surprisingly, was more afraid of losing at mini-golf than the clown ghost? Then, there's the fact that Scooby & Shaggy both loved Halloween because of the surprisingly logical reasoning that it was, literally, the only day of the year when if something spooky happens, you know for sure that it isn't actually a ghost. THAT was what I call character building & I loved it!!

You know, considering these facts I just can't help but feel sorry for Scrappy. For a time he actually was a hero, his addition saved the Scooby franchise from extinction but a couple of screw ups by the executives and even Hannah-Barbara themselves in later years is what eventually led to this recurring distain for the character. I honestly hope sooner or later they can re-introduce Scrappy as a protagonist again. Maybe make him act like Steven Universe in that he is naive and idolizes someone but learns things are more difficult but learns ways of how to fix those problems with his Uncle's help, as cowardly Scooby may be in real life. In fact I can even see Zack Callison being to Scrappy what Kate MiCucci is to Webby in the Ducktales reboot.

I agree, I feel like a lot of the hate for Scrappy is overblown. People forget that Scrappy did have some really good moments. I remember one episode where Scooby and Shaggy were making wishes and it kept causing insane stuff to happen. At one point, they are being pursued by a giant monster. One of them (forget if it was Scooby or Shaggy) wishes the monster to go away. Scrappy says "Why didn't you say so?!", runs over to the monster, picks it up, and tosses it into a f**king volcano. And then Scooby and Shaggy just stare at him awestruck. I feel a lot more could've been done with Scrappy, had they worked him into a spinoff. I feel like Scrappy would've been a better fit for something like Dynomutt, where he could've been the sidekick to Dynomutt (which would effectively make him a sidekick's sidekick) At least on a superhero show, it would justify Scrappy wanting to kick the shit out of supernatural menaces more. YOu could have Scrappy look up to Dynomutt the same way he looks up to his uncle Scooby. Considering those shows never crossed over (at least not back in the day) it would've been cool to see them sharing a universe.

Scrappy Doo was not a bad idea at first, the problem was poor timing, executive meddling, and franchise fatigue, as well as the franchise overall losing it's original appeal and meaning. The franchise pretty much had to be put to rest after The 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo, which is the one where Scrappy is actually the most tolerable and is considered to be one of the better things to come out of the franchise at that time. It wasn't until 1997 when Zombie Island came out that Scooby Doo would fully recover, but with Scrappy, the damage has already been done. Still, I'll take Scrappy Doo any day over Scooby Dum.

As an 80s kids I hated Scrappy - he never suffered any consequence for his actions. When he did something wrong, it was always Shaggy or Scooby that had to fix it while Scrappy left to go do something else stupid somewhere else.
@TheHobgoblyn6 жыл бұрын
Did any of the characters of this cast ever suffer any consequences for their actions or learn from any mistakes? I don't recall the episode where the bad guy won because Scooby and Shaggy decided to ignore the investigation to eat ridiculous amounts of food (or them become obese from doing so) and then screaming and running from decrepit old men in bad costumes to completely abandon figuring out the plot all together. Fred and Velma were the only ones who weren't a complete liability.

For me, Scrappy's flaw was that he would have ended every episode in 5 minutes by doing what nobody else had the balls to do & unmasking the villain after the first encounter.

Thank you for this detailed analysis. As I became more invested in the Scoobyverse, I found myself wondering why everyone hated Scrappy so much because, to me, there was nothing to warrant the amount of anger I would see online about him. It felt like a purposeful effort that was perpetuated by the studios back in the 90's and early 2000's, especially when James Gunn came out and said how much he detested Scrappy's character. I don't care how successful Gunn is. I will never support his works going forward because I don't think he has ever taken a serious look at the origins of Scrappy nor has he seen what efforts in development was made for him during the late 80's with the Superstars 10 films (Boo Brothers, Ghoul School, and Reluctant Werewolf -- the last of which is still my all-time favorite Scooby Doo movie). I would like to have a serious conversation with him about what on Earth he hates so much about Scrappy Doo.

I have a crazy idea What if Scrappy Doo got his own spin off show where he is in a mystery solving group consisting of other mascot characters from other mystery solving shows the group could consist of Scrappy Doo, Jabber Jaw, Speed Buggy, Funky Phantom, Goober, Sebastian, Fang Face and Captain Caveman each member would have a unique personality that contributes to the group in a different way. The show could have story arches. explaining things like why Scrappy-Doo was kicked out of Mystery Incorporated or how all the characters feel about overshadowed by Scooby Doo or why they formed this group in the first place. and have character development. The show could even have other characters show up every now and then to help the group like The Teenangles, The other members of Jabber Jaw, Speed Buggy, Jose and the Pussy Cats, Goober and the Ghost Chasers, Fang Face and Funky Phantom and Scooby Doo. Other characters like Batman and Robin, Blue Falcon and Dyno-Mutt, The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan, Dexter and Dee Dee, Courage The Cowardly Dog etc could help out sometimes. This is just my Idea.
@mcfuckinanotheraccount8086 жыл бұрын
way too much shit, narrow it down to like a group of 5, Caveman, Scrappy, JabberJaws, and tbh this are the best mascots other than Scooby, then the rest can have appearances and make something out of that
@PeterGriffin116 жыл бұрын
Good point the main 5 could be Scrappy, Speed Buggy, Jabber Jaw, Captain Caveman and Fang face.

Scrappy Doo is a super cute Great Dane puppy. I remember watching and his uncle, Scooby Doo on a spin-off on Cartoon Network when I was an adolescent, because it would air reruns of many different TV shows that were based on the Scooby Doo franchise which was produced by Hanna Barbera.

Also, what the hell happened with Scooby Doo on Zombie Island? That movie was way better than any right it had to be. The animation is impeccable.

I agree, not to mention it breathed fresh life into a franchise. Besides I always got a kick out of Shaggy and Scooby being Customs Inspectors, which technically meant they were law enforcement officers. Believe me I'm a geek about these things, they actually send Inspectors to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), and quite frankly I wonder what the instructors might have thought about Shaggy and Scooby.
