You can’t look away at all during the drive. You need mental breaks often to remain second by second vigilant. Take a break and look around. Then drive again and zero looking out… not even a 1/4 second. If you do that? You’ll be fine. Likely a break every 5 min cus your mind gets frustrated and makes you want to “just drive normal”… If you can’t meditate… don’t even think of driving this road.

We had a road in NC that was and likely still is like this. One morning an elementary school bus was driving along. It was raining. A dump truck loaded with gravel was flying the other direction. The training for the bus driver was to pull safely to the side and let the other vehicle pass. The driver could not see the side of the road clearly in the rain. A tire dropped off the dirt road. Then the whole bus rolled down the ravine. Helicopters from Charlotte came to rescue the children and the driver. There were no fatalities. The driver was found to have followed her training. She recovered and returned to continue driving the bus. I learned about this when I was at the bus garage for new drivers training. The wreckage of the bus was towed in. It was a harrowing sight. I was assigned to the same elementary school where to my surprise this had happened. The driver I talked to said that this was her bus. She told me her story that I just shared with you.

Condolences to all those that mourn the losses. Years ago, over the course of a few years, the wife and I traversed this road in rented Jeeps, as well as our own 4WD Blazer we had at the time. (I was driving.) There was never any life threatening drama during the entirety of the trips. You take your time and be very careful. It will never be known what conditions that led to this tragedy. (It was NOT through lack of experience on the part of the driver.) However, closing off such roads "for the safety of others" is doing a disservice to those of us that enjoy experiencing the mountains in such a manner. If you're uncomfortable with such exploration upon roads such as these: Simply stay off them, but please don't try to impose your concern on others and thus prevent them from safely enjoying such historic roads.

you can never predict when the land will give way due to erosion. There was an area of paved interstate right in the city and it was on a hill, and the side of the hill fell apart and one of the lanes crumbled. It was only a 50 foot drop, and no one was on it, but it caved in. Same thing goes with bridges. But in cases like this, you're purposely putting yourself in this situation. Camp Bird Mine road is outside Ouray, where I used to live. I have driven that road for sure more than 100 times. Depending on the time of year and what road maintenance has been done, you Can drive most of it in a two wheel drive Honda Civic. If it's icy, anything can happen, but it's hard for me to picture how an experienced guide could manage to go over the edge, unless they were trying to get around some rockfall. There is a lot of exposure, but the road is relatively wide for a Jeep road, unless rock fall blocked part of it. This shouldn't have happened! This is not Black Bear!

A yellow dodge charger and the motorcycle rider were racing or road raging. You could hear the car punch it and accelerate and it passed the bus on the left but the motorcycle guy tried to pass the bus on the right but there was no room on the shoulder. As the charger came around the left side I saw the motorcycle try to pass on the right and he flew off the cliff and flew a thousand feed down into the valley below. The bus and a few cars stopped and the bus driver used his CB radio to call for help. It was probably the most insane thing I've ever seen. I tried to tell my parents about it when I got home from school but they didn't believe me until they saw it on the news.
