Having grown up in a Colorado mountain town, the roads here can be a nightmare-especially in the winter. We never had a road this extreme where I was, but I’ve seen cars plunge off major highways like 285 & C470 into the abyss below. May God comfort the families of those lost in this tragedy. 😞

You can’t look away at all during the drive. You need mental breaks often to remain second by second vigilant. Take a break and look around. Then drive again and zero looking out… not even a 1/4 second. If you do that? You’ll be fine. Likely a break every 5 min cus your mind gets frustrated and makes you want to “just drive normal”… If you can’t meditate… don’t even think of driving this road.

My partner and I went on a tour with Don Fehd a few years ago up in the same area. He was a very good driver and a very nice, nature-loving man. I cannot imagine him making a rookie mistake due to all his experience. I can't help but wonder if a boulder fell or part of the road gave way causing this tragic accident. My prayers go out to all involved as well to their friends and families.

And I can assure you, more trees have been skinned, more tires have been busted on stumps, and fenders and bumpers have been bent, and most of the time, there's a pretty girl in the jeep, and the driver is making conversation and not watching the trail. I was stating an opinion on pretty much a common fact. He had 2 pretty women in the jeep, which means one was in the back seat. Taking your eyes off the trail for just a second can have bad results. Wasn't trying to make a joke , I was being serious, he probably got distracted, and once those big front tires leave the edge, it will just suck you off the road.

My family (from FL) took a trip west around Christmas time many years ago. We were driving in the mountains (paved road) and hit some ice going around a corner. There was no railing and a massive cliff, we slid right towards it and thankfully the other lane was empty. Somehow the car straightened out in time, but I get flashes of that memory from time to time and feel so thankful I live in flat, warm FL. My heart goes out to the families, it must be rough ❤️

We had a road in NC that was and likely still is like this. One morning an elementary school bus was driving along. It was raining. A dump truck loaded with gravel was flying the other direction. The training for the bus driver was to pull safely to the side and let the other vehicle pass. The driver could not see the side of the road clearly in the rain. A tire dropped off the dirt road. Then the whole bus rolled down the ravine. Helicopters from Charlotte came to rescue the children and the driver. There were no fatalities. The driver was found to have followed her training. She recovered and returned to continue driving the bus. I learned about this when I was at the bus garage for new drivers training. The wreckage of the bus was towed in. It was a harrowing sight. I was assigned to the same elementary school where to my surprise this had happened. The driver I talked to said that this was her bus. She told me her story that I just shared with you.

Condolences to all those that mourn the losses. Years ago, over the course of a few years, the wife and I traversed this road in rented Jeeps, as well as our own 4WD Blazer we had at the time. (I was driving.) There was never any life threatening drama during the entirety of the trips. You take your time and be very careful. It will never be known what conditions that led to this tragedy. (It was NOT through lack of experience on the part of the driver.) However, closing off such roads "for the safety of others" is doing a disservice to those of us that enjoy experiencing the mountains in such a manner. If you're uncomfortable with such exploration upon roads such as these: Simply stay off them, but please don't try to impose your concern on others and thus prevent them from safely enjoying such historic roads.

you can never predict when the land will give way due to erosion. There was an area of paved interstate right in the city and it was on a hill, and the side of the hill fell apart and one of the lanes crumbled. It was only a 50 foot drop, and no one was on it, but it caved in. Same thing goes with bridges. But in cases like this, you're purposely putting yourself in this situation. It's not just this road, and it will go on and on regardless of the vehicle your in.

Camp Bird Mine road is outside Ouray, where I used to live. I have driven that road for sure more than 100 times. Depending on the time of year and what road maintenance has been done, you Can drive most of it in a two wheel drive Honda Civic. If it's icy, anything can happen, but it's hard for me to picture how an experienced guide could manage to go over the edge, unless they were trying to get around some rockfall. There is a lot of exposure, but the road is relatively wide for a Jeep road, unless rock fall blocked part of it. This shouldn't have happened! This is not Black Bear!

driven up that road a lot in a 05 suburban with family It’s no big deal, just go slow and be courteous to other drivers. One thing you can’t control is rock fall, that very well may have happened in this incident ! I’ve been caught in a thunderstorm up there on that section of road, rocks, mud and water were pouring down on us, was able to get under the overhang before any damage was done

I'm so glad I'm afraid of heights... no worries of wanting to see sceneries that may involve death... I don't think the scenery was worth it🤷🏾‍♀️...

Likewise. I'm content with just looking at pictures and would happily visit any other areas that aren't as risky. Plus, I'd probably die of a heart attack in the car anyway because my fear would sent me to an early grave. 😬 I'd much rather enjoy walking on small trails, seeing the rainforests, etc like I do in my country. Still enjoying nature but a little bit less risky and panic inducing.

‘One of the scariest things you’ll ever do’…and yet almost every single vehicle traversing this trail remains on the trail. The newsworthy aspect of this incident would be what caused it? How did the professional Jeep trail guide allow his Jeep to slide off the trail? Or was there a rockslide? Or did the roadbed collapse?

I drove on a road like that in Southern CO on private property. It wasn’t all that long but it was scary as hell. I can’t imagine going a long distance on one like that.

You’re driving off road, on a mountain, on dirt! What do you expect? The road will be the same as a 4 lane highway? Use your heads. It’s dangerous and you can lose your life but that’s a choice YOU make and you’re free to make as an American.

So glad I didn't see right before my husband and I went on this similar road in Colorado. I had to close my eyes for certain parts. My husband is an amazing safe driver, but still anything can happen. So sorry for the families. 💔

I don't know about this area, but a Sunday drive using Google maps could take you to some very dangerous locations, not to mention get you lost in some horrendous locations if you aren't aware/careful enough. Some people definitely seek these situations out though.😔 Either way, RIP.

I was on a school bus on Rim of the World Highway in the San Bernardino mountains back in the mid 70s and I watched a motorcycle fly off of a cliff like this. A yellow dodge charger and the motorcycle rider were racing or road raging. You could hear the car punch it and accelerate and it passed the bus on the left but the motorcycle guy tried to pass the bus on the right but there was no room on the shoulder. As the charger came around the left side I saw the motorcycle try to pass on the right and he flew off the cliff and flew a thousand feed down into the valley below. The bus and a few cars stopped and the bus driver used his CB radio to call for help. It was probably the most insane thing I've ever seen. I tried to tell my parents about it when I got home from school but they didn't believe me until they saw it on the news.

@truescotsman4103 There's some solace I can offer. I was in a motorcycle wreck, and I felt nothing. It was slo-mo, as if in a glass bubble. Shock is a merciful thing. I could and should have died, and if I had, it wasn't bad or terrifying. More detached amazement than anything.

When I was 13 I was fortunate enough to see the peak of Mt. Everest (from a great distance). We took a jeep ride on a road even narrower than this to get to the peak of an observation point at 9000 ft elevation (Darjeeling, India). Most amazing view I've ever seen in my life.
