My three most recent cats were kittens when I got them, but they're all disabled (one blind, one with CH and one with major/lifelong repercussions from falling out of a thirty story building.) Adoption fees help cover some of the basics for shelter animals, depending on the age of the animal. I adopted my now 10 year old dog at 4 months and he had a medical issue with his skin which the adoption agency paid for. The adoption fee was $350 but included all his shots, neutered, rabies, skin medication, and a 25 pound bag of dog food (natural balance so not the cheap stuff so easily $50-$70). I was fostering him initially so the adoption agency paid for his food while I had him then too. So everything was WAY more than $350 but the group didn’t ask for anymore than that.

One of the best tips I've ever heard is to put a leash, collar, books, and a "voucher for adoption" under the tree. Then, once the holidays settle down, they can go out and pick the pet that they want and know that they can care for. I think the pet stores in my area sell special "gift cards" that can be "redeemed" for a pet and all of their adoption fees. It's different if someone has already been looking at a specific animal and seriously considering taking them home. But if you surprise someone with a pet, there's a huge risk that it won't end well. Especially if it's a child or a teenager. You can't expect a kid to be rational and make a logical decision when you go up to them and hand them a free puppy.

I have purchased every dog that I have ever owned. Because I want a pure breed puppy. For the simple reason that I know there characteristic and I want a puppy to train it how I want it to be. Certain breeds have different traits. That’s why you must get a dog that fits your lifestyle. Don’t pick a dog that needs a yard when you don’t have a yard. Plain and simple. It’s not very responsible to let mutts breed. Because they take on different traits. Some people don’t need kids. Just like some people don’t need pets. If you make a commitment stick to it. Everyone needs to quit trying to control everyone else and push their agenda.

;-; Now my ideas might sound childish ABER… what if they do wellness checks and stuff, like leave the dog at the soon to be owners house and after a month or so check up on the dog, if the dog is not okay then they take it back, if it’s okay then they sell it.

What about other states ship their animal shelter animals to New York when New York state has their own animals in shelter?
