So misleading- the canteen/restaurant is NOT in the actual basement of the Bowne Street Hindu Temple itself. The canteen/restaurant is in a separate building NEXT to the temple. You exit the actual Temple and walk into another building, or enter that building from the curb side. The canteen/restaurant is NOT actually in the basement of the Temple, but you can probably say it is on "Temple grounds". The actual Temple basement is just an open space /"empty hall" ready to be used for a variety of other things. There is also a Dosa Hut restaurant above ground next to the Temple. Once Upon A Time, like in the 1980's , the stretch of Main Street right across from Patel's Grocery had at least 10 Indian shops with freshly made sweets, the latest Bollywood VCR rentals, fresh samosas, some Sari shops, etc. All has now been swallowed up by the Communist invasion of Queens, where they don't want your business if you can't read their language. On the opposite spectrum of Hindu Philosophy and Religion, it is probably ANYTHING GOES as to what may be listed on some of those other Asian menus.

I was in an Indian establishment and they saw me staring at their elephant and offered to remove it since they felt it offended me as a Christian. I simply asked, "Explain it to me." They did and I called all of us people of God. Same with the food. Simple pleasures and honest beliefs bring us all together.

It is apparent, and one should note that these two ladies are in this temple canteen because they leaned about it from NYT or some other medium - not that they knew about it or that they were foodies or that they had tasted south Indian food from various restaurants! That explains her rating of "5 on the scale of 1 to 10" for the crisp dosa which she didn't even know how to eat! Her another off the cuff stock comment - "a lot goes into a dosa" earlier on only throws the penultimate light on the shallow depth of her knowledge of south-Indian food and cooking. Regardless, I have been to this canteen (and temple too ;) and food there is just marvelous.

To those who don't understand the discriminatory comments in this video, that chef just said "all the food here is prepared only by white people" suggesting that it's somehow better.

@pviveknair5 жыл бұрын
Nope. You got that so wrong. There are some traditional cooking secrets that only Brahmins know. In Kerala, we prefer Brahmins as a cook for marriage feasts. Well, not all Brahmins are good cooks though. There are some well-renowned families. Similarly, cooks from specific Muslim Cook families are preferred to prepare Biryanis and Non-veg items for the Receptions. This has nothing to do with discrimination but more of monopolies of certain families in some dishes.

Finally something from this channel that I can most likely eat with my gluten and lactose intolerance. I don't know if I'd ever find myself in New York or NYC in my life, though. Large cities seem like they'd make me feel like an ant and be pretty daunting. It would probably trigger my anxiety.
