I grew up in a 3 bedroom house with 9 siblings. My mother was a stay at home mom and she washed all our clothes in a wringer washer and hung them out to dry every day. There was always music playing while she cleaned and a smile on her face. We had 3 prepared meals every day. My dad came home for lunch and a hot meal was waiting for him. I didn't know it at the time but l really wanted to be like my mom. Although l work outside the house l still serve a homemade meal to my family each day. When I'm cleaning my thoughts go back to my childhood and my mom. I have a smile on my face and music playing. My mom taught us that no matter how rich or poor you are as long as you clean and take care of what you have you will always be rich in spirit. Thanks Nikki.

What I like about vintage clothes and patterns is that they were designed to flatter women’s figures. Fortunately, I have a mail order catalog that has my fashion style in dresses. You, Nikki, are responsible for my having so many floral dresses! My husband likes them. He is sweet enough to notice and compliment my clothes. Thank you for being such an inspiration. Whenever You share Your Lady of the House Videos I get inspired to be tmore of the homemaker God has called me to be in this season of my life. Since I have memory and can remember< I always wanted to be a Homemaker. I grew up seeing my mom so happy and content about her homemaking, that that was all I wanted. But as we know Life happens and I became a teacher. I wanted to work until I had my children. But again Life happened and my hubby lost his job when the company he worked for shut down. I was the sole bread winner for quite a few years. But then the time finnaly came at the age of 57, that I could finally come home after 35 years of working as a teacher. The hardest thing for me was to reprogram my mind and be the homemaker I have waited all those years to be. After ten years I can finally say I have come to terms with this new life. I sooo enjoy my home. Homemaking is one of my greatest joys.

I’m obsessed with improving interiors. I think we have to do whatever is in our power to make our living spaces beautiful and serene. I get a little sick and anxious when I’m in a messy or cluttered house. I want to ask for a broom or a sponge! Cleaning is the easiest way to make things nicer for little money and effort. I put on music or a soothing video (like yours and Unexpected Gypsy) while working. It’s my way of meditating.😊

If you have a smart TV.... I found a great video on You Tube called art screen saver for your tv. You can put it on and it lasts 4 hours and runs through all kinds of beautiful art paintings. Then when you clean around the big black box you have something beautiful to look at too. I have one on now with several Monet pieces. Some are paired with music others are silent. I love them because it turns the TV into beautiful art to look at and enjoy.

You really hit the nail on the head when you spoke about wanting to clean a home full of color, rather than one that feels like an office. Exactly! I love it when you take us outside with you. Your roses don't look too bad, especially to my eyes, which look out at leafless trees and a dormant garden. I can’t say I have always liked to clean, but about seven years ago I begin adopting a more vintage lifestyle and cleaning in a dress instead of sloppy “cleaning clothes” changed my mindset and now I enjoy the process. Being a teacher by trade, I know how important a clean and calm environment is for children so that’s what I focus on in my home. Enjoyed your video.

I remember before the iPhone came out I was on top of everything and maintenance was my middle name. I was so happy to be caught up on everything all the time. Social media is where we focus on friends in our phone that we really don’t know that well. I am now beginning to lesson the phone use these days and have found an improvement starting like I had back then. More focus on what’s around me and the ppl that I know in person. Yes, cleaning is one of my favorite things, along with moving and rearranging furniture. I live alone with my pets and can spend all day “making things lovely” rearranging house plants, adding beauty in the home and really making my home warm and welcoming. I am a strong believer in the spirit of the home. I feel as a homemaker it is a privilege to make a home warm and cozy. I love my Queen Anne furniture. When I sew I do a Full Bust Adjustment or FBA. If you let you seamstress know, she could do a full bust for you. You would get a great fit with any pattern.

I would love a video on ideas on how to curtail tech use from your a lady of the house perspective. I know you mentioned it briefly, but I think it’s worth having a whole video. I think these last two years have made many of us rely on technology in order to keep working, going to school, and keeping in touch with others when seeing them in person was not possible. I feel like a lot of us have gotten stuck in those habits and depend on tech a lot more. What helped us out in times of necessity is now a habit.

I have slowly grown in my enjoyment of cleaning. I wondered if it was simply maturity, but I think you're right - there's such pleasure in maintaining a beautiful home! I enjoyed seeing the setup of your family room. My most recent room project was my husband's office. It had become a bit of a "catch-all," and it looks so much better now that surfaces are cleared, odds and ends are tucked away in storage baskets, and books are arranged intentionally on the shelves. :)

I have a recommendation for the pergola on your back deck. There's a plant called queens wreath and purple sandpaper vine and it looks like wisteria but even better. I believe it would grow in your zone. It would look to enchanting growing on that pergola.

Hi Nikki- I appreciated your point about how many homes just look like an office. I’ve often thought that I feel like I just witnessed a shopping spree from HomeGoods or Hobby lobby. I like those places too, but so many homes are devoid of personal touches. My home tells a story, and what delights me? Is when people walk in they want to stop and look at details. And ask questions. That’s super fun! We shouldn’t be afraid to take risks in our home. And I agree with you that that’s why I like cleaning too. It’s a precious gift this place! We’ve lived in some really crappy places and a little bit nicer. It’s about the life we create inside of the walls. Cleaning it brings me joy. Of course it’s easier to say that now that I’m 50 and my kids are grown. I didn’t have the energy when I was young. So no one should feel comparative with each other. Seasons. I love laundry, I don’t mind cleaning, the one funny chore of the house? I dislike washing dishes and washing vegetables. Go figure. I have a question for you about when you’re wiping your blinds for your spring cleaning. Our blinds are a little thicker, some kind of heavier white plastic maybe. We live in the desert also and that just gets so grimy every time the wind blows. It doesn’t seem to wipe off easy. Are you using some kind of solution? I just love the lady of the house videos! I too have been working on cleaning up all those overlooked areas in my home this spring, but I’ve also been trying to bring more of the things I love into my home. I always thought I had to have the trendy Pinterest worthy home but the older I get I realize that while I want to make people feel welcome and comfortable they don’t live here, I do which has led me to start bringing color back into my home and the things that may not be on trend but that I love to have!

Hi Nikki, You look beautiful in this new dress and the aprons are lovely, too. Do you listen to podcasts, audiobooks or sermons online? I find such encouragement from Alistair Begg’s broadcasts and others; I listen each night while preparing to shower. Our phones can be a fabulous tool for weather, camera, music, shopping, placing orders, searching for best prices & email/texts. I wonder why it causes some people to waste time more than a book, tv, radio or land line? It’s an interesting topic to explore.

Thank you Julie! Time can be wasted on anything. Everything is lawful but not everything is profitable. Aside from the fact that smart phones and apps are designed to hold our attention more and more, the true cause of anything is ourselves if we allow ourselves. If we allow ourselves to waste time on any number of things we can. Our phones are great tools, there is also a wonderful tool on them that shows how much time we spend on them each day. Only the individual can determine if that time is something they would deem as wasted time however, an addict cannot self diagnose themselves. Ask those closest to you that see how much you use your phone and if they think you have a problem. The video I linked does a great job of explaining all of this.
