In this video I show you how to easily replace a leaking toilet tap with a new 'quarter turn' tap AKA 'mini cistern stop'.
It's not a complex task at all, but there is just a few steps involved making sure we don't create a water feature in the bathroom.
The stuff and things I use and recommend, when clicked these links will take you directly to Amazon or an eBay site, InspireDIY is an Amazon associate/eBay Affiliate. Using these links does not impact the price in anyway for you, but InspireDIY may be able to earn from recommendations.

Hi iv got a tap like that and it won’t tern fully off , its not stiff it just won’t tern fully off ..it’s a 10 year old build do you think I just need to replace the tap thanks 🇦🇺
@olivechopper
@olivechopper 5 ай бұрын
Hey Kim, not stiff - but not stopping the water completely? This sounds like the perfect candidate for a ‘reseat’! With this style of tap it’s definitely cheaper to try a repair first. If you want to try replacing the tap valve first- this is cheap and easy, unfortunately often only a temporary fix if the seat is worn and needing reseating. Good luck, all the best 👍Kent

Damn good video... Unfortunately i have an old housing trust home and I have an isolation tap one side and other side of the toilet a copper supply line coming out of tile going into a compression nut attached to the cistern. Probably okay to keep using it but wondering about complications updating the cistern.

Hey Kaxis, I’m thinking you’ll need a plumber to attach a fitting and tap to that copper pipe at the right place before disconnecting and removing the old cistern. Best of luck mate 👍 Kent

Nice and easy. My house must be the older tap size, it's much larger diameter. Also, don't you hate those small toilets as there's hardly any room to get in and then shut the door. We have one like that.

Hi Kent, should the tap be in the open position before you screw it onto the pipe from wall? Then turn it off before you turn the main water back on please. Like when you do a basin tap? Thanks for your video.
@InspireDIY
@InspireDIY Жыл бұрын
Hey Rebecca, with a ‘quarter turn’ tap you don’t have to because the valve does not plunge when turned or closed, but with a traditional valve style tap yes that is best practice👍

I just had a major catastrophe...I shut off the tap just like the one you replaced in order to change a basin tap in the bathroom of my wife's art school...she's on the 1st floor with other tenants below and on the sides of her studio. Thinking that the water was shut off (I had just successfully replaced the hot water basin tap before doing the cold water one) and as I unscrewed the bathroom tap spindle and almighty spout of water shot out (yes, I know I should have checked that there was no water coming out of the tap before disassembling it, but I didn't). To make matters worse, no one knew where the mains tap was....after trying for 10 minutes trying to force the old spindle back in again, getting soaked in the process, we eventually found the mains tap and turned it off...lesson learned that one MUST always know where the mains tap is...the landlord always maintained he didn't know where it was but luckily the downstairs tenant found it...it apparently is the mains tap for all four premises....is this legal? Surely we should have our own mains stopcock in our studio? Anyhow, thought you'd enjoy the story. I found this video of something similar to what happened to only difference being that the water was shooting up out of the basin tap: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYGWYaKhn9V2odE&ab_channel=cobblewagen

Have you notice that flexi hose is damage & soon that will brake the mesh & will need to be replaced
@InspireDIY

Hey mate, if you are suspecting the hose is damaged be mindful that the mesh is just there to protect the rubber hose inside which is the watertight aspect of it, pretty cheap to replace, good luck with it, Kent

Hi Kent, I tried but it seems to not as easy as how you unwrenched the cistern valve, I am worried about mine water pipe is fixed or not, still attempting to loosen it now, it's in a tight spot it does not come loose after half a turn. Please give some advice.

not bad, but you did not specify how tight the fittings should be to stop leaks and how to rotationally position the wall cock. So, actually, you are not very bright.
@InspireDIY
@InspireDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Thomas, sorry I didn’t explain everything involved …I did my best💁🏻‍♂️ it turns out tension is quite subjective when most DIYers don’t own a torque wrench. A rule of thumb is 1-2 full turns after hand tight but no more or this could crack a brass fitting and cause a leak, apply a suitable thread seal like ptfe teflon tape wrapped 5-10 times as well. Rotation position of tap is not important, it’s more of an aesthetic thing. Hope this helps buddy. Kent

@@InspireDIY the position of the cock can have a major bearing on how watertight the connections are.
@InspireDIY

Hey Thomas, I never want to give anyone bad advice, so thanks for chiming in with some thoughts. After consulting with my trade certified plumber (father in law), he advises that the cock is fitted/rotationally positioned to best suit the cistern hose length and in no way does this alter it’s performance with flow or possibility of leak. Thanks however, hope this helps👍 Kent

@InspireDIY Жыл бұрын
Hey Mets, You may need to check the rubber compression seal that's inside the nuts at each end of the hose(if that's where it's leaking from?) these can get damaged and worn.. if so, a replacement hose is quite cheap and easy to replace, when your water is turned off take the hose down to a hardware or plumbing store and match the length with a replacement. same goes if it's the tap that's leaking. best of luck mate, let me know how you get on.
