It feels like maybe Instagram are having to do this to keep creators from switching to other platforms, especially now that they have stopped pushing regular photo posts and that it is something they have been reluctant to do for a long time. It should have happened a long time ago though. Creators have a right to earn from their work and creations. Hopefully it works out well, it will be interesting to see how it works! Great video man! I’m hoping that they don’t just give this opportunity to already “established” creators. I have almost 2,000 followers, which isn’t a lot, but my Reels get a lot of reach (12k). Keep creating Creators, it’s gonna happen for us! :D

If it helps put it in context it takes a lot of people years to get monetised on KZbin. It took me about 9 months of grinding at it to make it to 4000 watch hours.

I said "anxiety" 3 times in a video and KZbin demonetized it. Instagram is even crazier. Pampering the whole world since 2020. I'm not interested. Simply not interested. That platform is 💩. Something new needs to be developed.

I have seen ads running at the beginning of some of the accounts I follow on IG already. I live in the USA so not sure if it has reached the UK yet? It isn't on many, just a few so far. If IG set the bar at the 10k mark as you quite reasonably suggest, I think they might be shooting themselves in the foot as they won't attract the creators they want in the same way as TikTok and YT as arguably it's harder to grow on IG and reach that magic number!

I think YT has that 10,000 mark as well. Monetization sounds good on a piece of paper, but there is a draw back. Once you are on that system, you are being monitored. And if you make any content that is not mainstream or not corporate friendly, you would get demonetized. That's what happens to the activists and non-corporate journalist making KZbin videos exposing the establishment. Not only that, KZbin can bury these channels with its algorithm. If KZbin wants to, it can have these channels banned for no valid reason. IG can do the same. Censorship in social media really does exist, and it is growing viciously.

We were invited to add ads to our IGTV channel last week. But, we aren't going ahead with it at this point because we can't stand ads interrupting the flow. Maybe we are wrong but we don't want to irk our followers. We also use Epidemic Sound but are sad to know that if you ever cancel your videos are suddenly unlicensed. So in essence you have to pay forever.

I’m not sure really. I’ve always thought it social media all being like links on a chain. They all help and work together to reach different audiences…not that I’m a big influencer or anything. I’m trying to grow my Instagram right now and do what I love, I’m not sure it will take off but I’m having fun and looking into starting to sell products so if that’s going to be a feature that would be cool.

Instagram needs to either let people go off platform or they need to make their platform more robust. I don't see them doing either one. Instagram has never let the market guide them. They made a failure of a product that the market responded to because the market changed. Somewhere around 2010 the nature of what people want fundamentally changed and Instagram reaped the benefits. They masterminded nothing, they won at musical chairs.

@@ItsJonnyKeeley as a photographer wanting to start documenting what I do with video, Instagrams reels are a good stepping stone and I think genuinely have a place supporting photography (I see a lot of “behind the camera” type reels). Instagram shouldn’t ditch stills but build on what they’ve created… or maybe that’s up to the creators to decide for them! After all, Instagram provides a platform… it’s the creators that decide how to use it.

I would say a creator is someone who leads by telling a story through art/video/music an influencer is someone who leads by sharing their life. Both valid, that’s just my opinion though.

Are they gonna nail it? Depends. I don't think it will help as much if they only monetise videos. Picture content is still being pumped out. So, they would only nail it in my eyes if the algorithm rewards real and quality content Not like how KZbin rewards content farms like "Blossom" or "So Yummy", which give you cooking recipes that you can't make at home. Since they are very sneaky with cuts and swapping out the product. But because it's made to be clickable, people click. And the content farms make bank scamming people that are genuinely trying to make stuff and follow along. Basically, go after accounts when whole communities complain about their content being misleading and deceptive.

Remember when people made videos for fun, to inspire, to educate, to share experiences, solutions, stories ….. yeah me neither. Money money money money. Everybody wants to get rich fast doing what they love …. Because that’s what society’s been telling them. Sadly it’s not the case and while there are PLENTY of qualified professionals out there that indeed deserve it … I’d say 75% of what I see who call themselves content creators or Influencers aren’t worth a dime in a bucket!
