Install Upgraded Pawl Shifter & Eccentric Screw In Harley 5 Spd Trans. How to install a Baker upgraded pawl shifter, pawl seal and snap ring and eccentric screw in a Harley 5 Spd Trans with old centering pawl screw. By replacing pawl center screw and updating to eccentric screw makes pawl shifter fully adjustable in a non adjusable Harley 5 Spd Trans.

Tinker I have never installed a pawl shifter yet, but with your video I feel I can do it, With your comment on "Its the first thing in and the last thing out", I hope I never have to replace a broken pawl spring because it looks like a major PITA. This is a very good series you are doing on the complete tear down and rebuild of the Harley Twin Cam 5 speed. Keep up the good work.

Glad you're enjoying the series. I did it this way so every aspect of a trans rebuild would be covered and nothing left out. Doing it this way covers all serviceable parts of the trans not just the rebuild. Again very glad you like it. Thanks for you're comment, ride safe and thanks for watching

another great video my friend.. thought something happened to you, never saw a video for a week or so. I watch everyone. A question have you ever replaced the rear engine mount on a twin cam Dyna? keep up the interesting videos.

Hi Steve how's recovery going? Yep I missed 2 weeks of putting up a video, had some family business to tend to. Nope I've never replaced a rear motor mount TC Dyna. So I can't offer any advice on that one. Hope you're doing well, thanks for watching

Love it...ty for another awesome vid. I have a 5 speed tranny also, on a 2005 fatboy 15 anniversary . Really no trouble, with it. Just get a loud clunk, even when hot , from N to first( the usual loud clunk when cold, normal) but getting it HOT , with a different feel, slight vibration ,after clutch release does get me a little nervous... Do i have anything to worry about? other than that, shifts ok....sometimes, its a little tuff to shift from 3rd to 4th when getting on it though.??? again thank you for video . ps...i just changed the tranny fluid , to lucas synth,75w-90. The old fluid was fine, looked like honey( Mobil 1 synth. 75w-90).magnet looked good, little fuzz.!! pss- I did have my IPB, changed also to the 1 upgrade bearing kit, with no more walking race! sorry for long post!!

No problem on the long post. I enjoy them. Your stuck with the famous Harley clunk from neutral to 1st. They all do it hot or cold, it's the design. Your using the right weight oil and synthetic works best. Occasional trouble shifting from 3rd to 4th is not a big problem. Check your linkage to make sure everything is tight, lubed and not binding. Also depends on how many miles you have on the bike. But I wouldn't worry about it until it becomes frequent. A little fuzz on your magnet is normal. I don't have any experience with eliminating the race on the main shaft. I've seen the kits but never installed one. Glad you liked the video. Ride safe and thanks for watching

Tinker I have a 1994 FLHT and I was listening to your video on the pawl shifter and about not being able to upshift. I have the opposite problem I get into 5th gear and try to down shift and and it goes nowhere. Then I heel down on 5th gear (which it hasn’t came out of)and that does something and it starts to let me downshift. Could it be the same problem? I am also in the process of downloading the service manual. One more thing do you have a video on the steps it takes to get that tranny out and setting on the bench? Thanks for the question. There are a lot of reasons its not downshifting. It could be the pawl shifter, it also could be a bent or worn shift fork, or loose or binding linkage. I always tell people start with the simple things first. Check the shift linkage to make sure it's not binding or loose, next check clutch and cable adjustment. If all is good than move on to the heavier stuff. I do have a number of videos which shows disassembly of most components to get to the trans door. If you go to the home page of the channel you'll find playlists. First one playlist to look at will be Primary, watch part 1 & 2. Next playlist will be Transmission, that playlist has a lot in it including a complete rebuild. Hope that helps you. Thanks for watching

Tinkering wit Harleys HELP!! I recently pulled the gear cluster out of my boy's 02 electra glide to replace the shifter pawl. Nike has 20k miles on it. Transmission is in great shape. I had to tap on the mainshaft because I couldn't get a bite to get the race puller on. Well, I reinstalled the cluster, shift forks, shifter pawl, and shift drum on the tranny and only have 1st, neutral, and 2nd. What could be the cause of this?? Thank you sir

Did you have the trans in neutral and the shift drum in the neutral position when you installed it. I'm assuming your spinning the main shaft when trying to shift. Also is it a stock pawl shifter or is it a adjustable.

@tinkeringwithharleys Yes sir, transmission in neutral, and shift drum assembly in neutral. Also has the stock pawl which isn't adjustable I think?? I think I figured it out. I had to loosen the main shaft and lay shaft nuts and tap onnthe mainshaft because the race had walked on me, and I think I hit the mainshaft too hard and got everything out of whack. I'm going to pull it apart and put the gear cluster in the press and press it into the case more. I noticed the mainshaft was sticking out further than normal Because I had a lot extra space when I put the race puller on so that has to be my problem

Yes you can install a shift drum and pawl while the trans is in the bike.
