@aember3 жыл бұрын
@@paulawatters489 You can! Grab your favorite vegan biscuit mix (like original bisquick) or pancake mix, shred cabbage into it (or if you're like me, just use your favorite bagged coleslaw mix from the grocery store), and cook according to package instructions. Just skip adding any eggs, or sub in a flax egg. You'll need to source your own favorite vegan mayo, obviously, and skip the bonito flakes, but most okonomiyaki sauce is vegan (read the package of anything before you buy, of course!) As far as the proteins go, I've always just left it out, but I'm sure you could toss in vegan bacon if you have something you like -- I don't think it needs it, though!

I've described okonomiyaki to friends as "the Japanese version of Egg Fu Yung." The flavor profiles are very similar. I’ve always wanted to make okonomiyaki, just haven’t gathered the ingredients. I wonder if one could substitute prepackaged cole slaw mix for the cabbage, since the slaw mix is basically shredded cabbage and shredded carrots. I’d hate to buy a head of cabbage and only use a small portion for the okonomiyaki, since it’s only me in my house. I’d have substituted prosciutto instead of bacon, since you can get it in thinner portions than you can with bacon.

I have to question the “instant” nature of this. Instant cup noodles are instant because you just pour boiling water in and that’s it. This is basically just a tub of half the ingredients you need to cook something. It seems to me like shredding the cabbage and cooking it are the most labourious part of regular okonomiyaki
@topazdazzlesDA3 жыл бұрын
it should have also come with the mayo and okonomiyaki sauce so that it would be more like a kit where you only provide the "fresh" ingredients.

There is no "instant" word on the products. It just say "Okonomiyaki set that you can mix in the bowl". In Japan, it's pretty normal to have a set to cook or make something but not an "instant" like these.

I tried making okonomiyaki a couple of months ago for the first time. I was finding cooking it tricky (the recipes all seemed to have minimal batter to hold together the cabbage). Then half way through cooking we had a power cut. The power didn't come back for 19 hours (something that's very unusual here, I got compensation for how long it was) and the okonomiyaki was ruined 😔 . I think it'll be a while before I try again.
