Many thanks go out to #Georgios over at #quippr for getting a hold on these CPUs for my review. #NotSponsored 🤗🤩 By the time this video goes live there surely are more videos out there discussing this topic. 😅 Still, I want to share my version too and maybe spread the word about what can be done to battle high temperatures and power draw on Raptor Lake. 🔥🤣

I have looked high and low for the answer to high temps on my i7 14700k and this was the answer. Excellent, thanks so much. Dropped my MSI BIOS max wattage from 40?? Or something to 125 and tried my cinebench and got higher than my test without changes. So pleased. At 70 years old all I want I’d a good computer for some games and run my home. Thanks again

its interesting to see how 1-2 decades ago overclocking was the ‘thing’ to do …… in recent times (~3-5 years) the focus has switched heavily to undervolting, even before energy ⚡⚡costs we’re skyrocketing 🤯! I’ve been doing simple ‘quick n dirty’ undervolts for about 5 years now and seen decent and noticeable (in software / bios results only) reduction in system / component temps and power draw 💪🥳

seems like you are looking at the wrong voltage, Nic. I have learned that VID is the voltage that the CPU requests, it is NOT the actual voltage the mainboard applies (vcore).

9:11 This is the symptom of not using up to date bios and ME firmware, my 13900KS isn't downclocking like that when undervolted. 0.1300-v doing 6ghz all core at 1.365v using V/F curve undervolt. As others have pointed out here, VID is what the CPU is requesting not actual voltage, you need to scroll down to voltage sections and find Vcore.

Asrock's Load Line Calibration is backwards compared to Asus. Higher LLC on Asrock boards actually increases Voltage droop. That's why the actual voltage was lower than what you enetered. Because you set the LLC higher-----which actually lowers voltage at load, on Asrock boards.

Interesting, all I had to do is reduce the cpu voltage by 40mV using Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (CPU voltage offset), and the temp under full load of my 13700K went down to around 87 degrees, from 97-100. I have new settings which I am using for my i9-13900k and i9-14900k. I don’t like the uncertainty of undervolting so prefer working with power and clock limits. With these settings I got a couple of FPS BETTER on CP2077 and Forza Horizon Benchmark, went from 99th to 98th percentile on PC Mark Extended, passed the Time Spy Stress Test, Time Spy was within a whisker of the average for my hardware, Cinebench R23 finished between 37-38000, CPU-Z, Intel Diag tool and Prime95 was stable and < 90 degrees. MCE off, PL1 and PL2 limit to 225, limit P-core boost to 5.3 GHz and E-core boost to 4.0GHz, and use balanced power profile in Windows (although I do disable core parking to keep system highly responsive). Oh and just XMP on the RAM. I didn’t change LLC or voltage offset values. With these settings, you should have no stability issues, be able to run on an air cooler like the NH-D15 (what I use on my 3 i9 13th/14th gen systems) and will barely notice any performance changes in gaming or productivity.

Update: I have now set voltage offset at a modest -0.010v. I have disabled the C6&C7 C states and EIST. I have then increated max P core clock to 5.5GHz and E cores to 4.3GHz. Lastly I have locked AVX at 0 offset. I have tested on P95/CB R23 and CB R15. All great and in a mid 20 degree room, no workload exceeds 80c on package or cores. Happy Bunny!

@walerybien8193
@walerybien8193 Жыл бұрын
Do i understand it correctly (i guess that 1.460 you put in BIOS got me confused)? You manually set the voltage (but only if the offset mode is limited) excactly the same as stock readout during the 1st benchmark run? And then go lower by small increments to keep the clocks readouts the same, also setting a load line level high enough not the got drops. Is that right? Sounds convincing and not that hard, but there are some threads around the internet that say it's complicated and that you need to fine-tune AC_LL and DC_LL correctly to do it, which is way more difficult, when you read it. What do you think?

Well... I have undervolted and tested different voltages... My i5 13600K was at 100°C stock. No matter how little I lowered the voltage, there was a slight dip in performance. And there was always thermal throttling, never going below 100°C. Obviously the first thing to consider is if the cooling is adequate, right? Well, yeah... I have a bequiet cooler capable of 250W of cooling. Should be ok, no?... I have checked my mounting on the CPU and the paste application... Everything was in order... Unfortunately, although I know it's true that you can get better temps with undervolting, I must have gotten a shitty sample... My guess is either that the CPU or CPU isn't flat enough, or even worse that the die doesn't make good contact with the IHS (that's what the cover is called, right? 😅 ). I won't be trying to fix that cause I want my warranty, but unfortunately I can state that sometimes some people might just not be lucky... Having 40°C at idle and immediately skyrocketing at 100°C when stress testing is dum... But I guess that's what you get with intel lately... I just wonder if my intel choice is actually faster than the AMD I was considering... With the shitty sample and high temps I mean... I went with an intel CPU because it was supposed to be slightly faster. But is that really the case when constantly thermal throttling? I'm not so sure anymore...

I'm sorry but there is a big mistake in this video. At 6:21, you asked to check the current CPU voltage and marked the value of the base VIDs. That's wrong, it's not the current voltage of the processor, it's the voltage that the processor requests from the voltage regulator. This is totally different from the vcore which is the actual monitored CPU voltage value that the CPU gets.
