Looking at her deck, it's an extra turns deck. Letting her connect and chain extra turns is a good way to end up dead. Josh's deck is also more than capable of killing fast, if not necessarily capable of hitting the entire table. I'm not sure about Jimmy's deck, but looking at Jesper's deck it definitely seems unable to win quickly and instead plays like a reasonable toolbox hatebears deck. Jesper definitely was in for the long haul, so early game he's not really worth targetting. This match needed more boardwipes. Jesper kept the counter up for rift and Meddling Mage'd the Toxic Deluge. One more boardwipe would've screwed his position. Also, strip mining the Cradle, though I think Ashlen really needed the mana to land big spells so *shrug*

I feel like threat assessment in this game wasn't done very well. As soon as Sisay was left on the board in favor of the Sol Ring, I knew this game wasn't going to go well... ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS: Something we don't see (but we do in real life) is the pre-game discussion between players about which decks they're using and if they're at the right power-level for each other. It's a vital part to help ensure someone doesn't sit in the corner twiddling their thumbs. It's been discussed on the channel in the past but I don't think I've ever seen that pre-talk discussion. It's a challenge in itself and it might add an interesting element. Please note this is not a bash at Jesper, how he played or CEDH or high-tuned decks. He played very well and the deck was beautiful (except for the stax). And, as people have said in the comments, travelling over from certain countries with their favourite decks means limiting which decks you can travel with. As Kyle said a while ago, if everyone is playing CEDH decks, then there's no confusion about the power level. I'm very guilty of seeing certain commanders and going "Ach! Hans, Run!" and spending bit too much time focusing on it. While Yuriko is (for good reason) scary, I've seen more top tier CEDH decks built with Thrasios & Tymna than I've seen casually built ones. Seeing only a few further cards (like the Stax and Sisay) should have been clear indicators that they needed to focus their efforts.
@tzarl4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was surprised that the other players were tripping over each other in the mid game to make deals with Jesper to just buy a turn when they should have known his deck was well on track to lock them out soon anyways. @@moritzhoff6412 Most of the cards he ran were those you'd see in a hate-bear comp build. I've seen CEDH decks win without combos. I was excited too--Marchesa is one of my main decks. I actually don't like his build much though. With Marchesa you need to slam her as early as possible and then make multiple threats stick (I like to play her out with a free counterspell in hand to protect her i.e. Fierce Guardianship). Haste and a sac outlet are key too to unlock Dethrone. All that topping and scroll racking is a waste of time and mana I took all that junk out and added fast ramp and low CMC bangers.
@junpingqiu8974 жыл бұрын
The Tymna and Thrasios deck is not a cedh deck, but high level casual deck. If it is a cedh deck you will see: 1. the 4 most expensive counterspells (Force of Will, Mana Drain, Fierce Guardianship, Force of Negation) protecting the combo pieces 2. Lots of tutors 3. infinite mana combo to draw entire deck with Thrasios and cast Thassa's Oracle for the win 4. Demonic Consultation and Thassa's Oracle for the win 5. Game over by turn 4 or 5. Nevertheless stax pieces are also played in CEDH table (usually to stop or slow down the combo player), but are usually played in Derevi or Commanders in Azorius colours.
@Tacklepig4 жыл бұрын
That's not quite true, depending on the meta winning by combat is quite possible even in cEDH. Hatebear stax is quite playable and can easily win through beatdown, and combos often would be disadvantageous for this type of deck. Also, a stax list will take the game way longer than turn 5, even in cEDH. The list he played here could easily hold its own on cEDH tables. I'm playing a similar hatebear stax deck (though I'd admit mine is high powered casual, I do have a few suboptimal choices) and I've won competitive games with that, too. Remember there's no actual distinction between cEDH and actual commander. cEDH is just playing competitively. If your "casual" deck is good enough to win tournaments, there's no reason to not consider it competitive.

Of these 3 removal options off the top of my head after watching this game, 2 of them were used on Ashlen who at no point in this game was in a dominant board position. The other was Ashlen's card and just not used. I get it, she wins quite a bit, but I feel like there was some EXTREME misreads on the threat assessment this game. And I mean, Ashlen, Jesper spent legit half the game smacking you in the face :(. Strip mine him. Between Jesper getting away with just beating on Ashlen all game and Josh backing down when Jesper threatened him, like... even politically, this game felt off.

I could feel the heat from Josh in response to Jesper's deck and playstyle. There were some basic rules that were broken by Jesper in this game: 1) Keep your word when you make a truce. 2) If you make a bad play, no take backs, unless everyone agrees, 3) Play a deck that fits the power level and tone of your play group.
@matthewsmith12754 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I felt the heat from Josh as well. Hate bears and general trickery will cause that, but I think he handled it rather well. After that betrayal he should have gave Jesper no quarter and pressured him to use his answers or die to Commander damage. I will say that Jesper did very well in controlling the table with his words and honestly he didn't have to use many of his answers because everyone else was so willing to use theirs.

This may be the most frustrating game of commander I've ever seen them play. I still feel like this is not scripted, but they were waaaay too deferential to their guest. I call conflict of interest with the playmat art deal they have; but if I were Jesper I wouldn't want them to pull punches, especially when he rolls in with a griefy-style, 'you can't have fun' deck. You can tell its Jesper's 'go to' deck as he pilots its many interactions fast and anticipates having Gaddock Teague out later, so he names Toxic Delgue with his Meddling Mage; He knows that in serious Black decks, (and all three opponents were in that color) one of the few popular answers that would have dismantled his board would have been Toxic Deluge. He had to figure all 3 tuned decks had it. To everyone's credit, they all lived up to the billing and brought serious, tuned decks - even though Jimmy never really got off the ground. No 'Bear Force One' BS here sneaking in from behind for the win. Key takeaways: 0) Danger Will Robinson - its T&T... and hate bears? Sounds like a kick in the junk - be very wary. 1) STRIP MINE THAT CRADLE! I knew it was probably all over when the Sword of F&F came out and the Strip Mine was tapped. 2) I can't believe Captain Sissay lasted as long as she did! 3) Jesper goes back on his word, or at least tries to rules-lawyerly parse it. CAN'T BE TRUSTED. Lessons should be taught. In the interests of keeping him in check, Josh still should have gone through with his threat and jammed him - both a moral lesson and to set him back as he was just as scary as everyone else at this point. 4) Ashlyn was scary at times, but was still the punching bag the whole game. Her stuff kept getting stolen or 'revoked' in the early game. Josh did not get rid of the Phyrexian Revoker so much as Jesper decided to block with it, so he shouldn't be taking credit for some kind of perverse good will with Ashlyn. Some had a 'paymaster' comment in here about Ashlyn being a good employee and taking one for the team (and her paycheck). Priceless. 5) THEN, a few turns later Josh talks about trying to take Jesper out as he's clearly the threat...but he then attacks Ashlyn?!? Reference my 'punching bag' critique from the prior point. Josh is too good a player to not force his CLEARLY dominant opponent to use their resources in an archenemy situation. He does Jesper a favor as he should have known the other two weren't going to go after him. Ashlyn is now gone, Jimmy already constrained for mana is even moreso, and Jesper is fee to continue to develp Aside from the Strip Mine sin, this is the biggest mistake of the game and isn't even a judgment call like keeping the one mana around being generated from the Strip Mine would be. This is clearly the wrong play. 6) Jimmy should have blocked the Glen Elendra Archmage (one less counterspell), why wouldn't you? It was clearly a mistake on Jesper part. Its not in Jimmy's long-term advantage for him to counter other people's stuff when he is already ahead and 'hoping' he doesn't counter your stuff with no deal is a mistake. Bad call. Not so much on the actual play itself, but because of his analysis - that was the mistake.
@beltfedweapon99674 жыл бұрын
Oh, and Jesper's weird land tapping habits may be strategic, it throws a surprising amount of people off in game. I used to metagame this one guy at my old LGS with as many white-bordered version of cards as possible because he played straight unfun Blue decks. Combine 4th edition swamps in my mono-Black deck with some of them being upside down and not in neat rows, and he had a harder time focusing on doing the stupid Blue things that he wanted to do. Instead he was sweating how my lands looked and he'd ask me at least once a game to straighten up my lands and I was like 'I'm good dude...no you don't need to do it for me... no, please don't touch my cards..." He'd almost always take the bait and counter my good card so that I could follow up with the really excellent one which was the one I actually wanted to play.
