Did this journey at night in 1991 (Rome to Palermo and v.v.) and in the daytime in 2013 (Naples to Siracusa and Siracusa to Rome) and I can thoroughly recommend it. A beautiful and easy trip which takes you to a place which is both Italian and at the same time otherworldly. If I had to choose I'd take the daytime train, beautiful views all the way and the ability to go on deck during the crossing of the Straits of Messina. And don't forget to get an arancini aboard the ferry!

I believe that it's standard now due to food handling limitations and caution during Covid. Likewise free tea/coffee/snacks in First Class in UK trains. The Caledonian sleepers have no food either just a sealed packet of biscuits and bottle of water, and the solo use of cabins. Hopefully they will all survive COVID as they can only be taking in as little as 10% of normal. Brilliant video Dylan, very informative and beautiful. Wish I could be there now!! Thanks.

It’s not only because of COVID. There’s no restaurant car. You can buy food on board when there’s the food trolley but no service with COVID and by the way the just have snacks and drinks

I've used these trains a few times over the last 40 years and its an amazing journey. I'm often surprised at how many people put films of them on KZbin as if they've discovered a hidden secret! Well done Dylan though, you've done justice to one of my favourite parts of Italy.

Putting a train on a ferry is pretty amazing and I've met quite a few Italians in the north who didn't know about it. Next time you meet an Italian, ask them how you can travel between Italy and Sicily and see how many of them know about this. Very good report, Dylan

I took the other intercity notte departing at 10pm from Palermo back in late September last year. I was on the deluxe sleeper which was actually freezing cold due to AC that couldn’t be turnt off;) They provided a newspaper along with a breakfast in the morning. However the car was incredibly loud, you could barely sleep. The scenery around Naples was amazing indeed. The sleeper car felt much older than these couchettes but it was comfy. Overall a very positive experience. I know it’s pandemic, ppl get ill and die but thx to covid traveling has been enjoyable as never before: no crowds, you can visit many places without flocks of tourists around, you get tickets easily, ppl are finally forced to keep basic hygiene, they don’t spit on you, they don’t tread you down in queues. Plus you travel on night trains on your own! Don’t you just love it? 😎

Hi there! I just arrived here from the NonStop Eurotrip channel and I really like it too. Congrats! I did the same trip exactly 5 years ago (couchette, 4 berths) departing from Palermo and getting off in Napoli Cle instead. I loved the experience although I remember feeling those "matresses" a bit hard and the pillow too tiny. And yes, DO bring your own food and beverages since there was no catering whatsoever. I slept little but enjoyed every second of the journey. Keep up the good material flowing in. Cheers

In my experience, Middle Eastern and South Asian people have different habits using a toilet. They don't sit - they squat. Faced with a Western toilet, they try to squat on it, and break the seat. Most Westerners can't squat - their legs literally aren't able to do that. Like sex, it's hard for all of us to talk about toilet habits, so the resolution is to remove the seat.

Loved the video, so very scenic! I am very impressed with the Couchette option. As a person with a mobility issue travelling with my "big guy" husband, having two lower berths like that, would be ideal. With Amtrak we'd have to get two Roomettes or possibly a Family Bedroom and I'd be stuck on the short berth. Plus the Family Bedroom has awfully small windows compared to the other sleeping accommodations, which cuts down on the scenic views. The Couchette room definitely looked roomy, clean and modern. Thank you for sharing your travels with us, your videos are always enjoyable and well edited. Safe travels to you!

Thanks, Dylan! Another great video from your channel. Everything is beautiful and very well filmed. A night train !!! I love night trains, of all kinds !!! What happiness !!! A pure treat !!! Everything, the station, the train, the cabin, the ferry. And if you didn't have time to film the entire ferry, that's okay. First, you had already filmed it. And above all, it proves that you slept well and therefore that the bed is comfortable! The scene in which nonstop eurotrip films your departure by train is very emotional. Tell me, have you planned to travel with nonstop eurotrip for example once in a duo train side by side or face to face or in a square? That way, everyone would film their part of the trip (50% each) and each would give their opinion on the trip, which may differ depending on the person. It would be a great cooperation. What a real team of enthusiasts. Finally, what, you feasted us, a huge bravo to you !!! Thank you so much. Dylan, very quickly you deserve a lot more subscribers than that !!!

Our journey began in in between Palermo and Messina in a little villa very near the coast with the most incredible evening light I still remember with awe. I assume the same rule applies for train travel there: add 90 minutes to your arrival time and add 30 minutes to each third of the country as you go south from Milan. : )

Many years ago, when there were many more sleeper trains available throughout Europe than today, I travelled from Cologne to Copenhagen in a six berth couchette. Never again. It was an unpleasant experience sharing with 5 total strangers and arriving at your destination in the rumpled clothes you had slept in. Terrible idea. You didn't have that experience, given Covid restrictions. As a result, when I then travelled from Bergen to Oslo I booked a sleeper compartment - much more comfortable. Similarly with a trip from Nice to Paris. Great video, by the way, and certainly a trip I intend to make.

I had this trip a couple of years ago, that is something amazing I want to recommend to everyone. Anyway, there is more than a reason why there is no food service. Until about ten years ago actually, there was a restaurant car on Intercity and Espresso (today's Intercity Night) trains. But with the low cost airlines boom, and the opening of the High speed rail network, the use of this kind of trains has been reduced a lot. First of all, many of the users of this kind of trains has moved to the low cost airlines; secondly, Trenitalia has deliberately reduced/weakened the Intercity services, trying to move their long haul passengers from Intercity to the costly Freccia trains. That's why most of the Sicilian sleepers stops in Rome: there, passenger that will proceed to northern Italy (the most), are forced to take a Freccia train. In fact, food service was eliminated from Intercity trains. Anyway, for the good news, Trenitalia in the last few years (as the new livery and the refurbishmented car have demonstrated) has started to heavily reinforce their Intercity trains system, with more trains and services, so I am sure we will se the food service again after the end of the Covid era. Probably not with a restaurant car like early 2010s, and we will not see the sleepers come again to the northern cities (except the Milan-Palermo via Genova), but trolleys surely will come back.

Thank you for the explanation. It’s always mindboggling to see how companies are trying to “educate” their customers to accept certain things by doing such manoeuvres. What I don’t get is why they do not setup a vending machine that provides some snacks and drinks. Rarely any train company does it, and many of them had the same great ideas about “enhancing” the onboard service by shutting bars and restaurants aboard.
@darioa.5381
@darioa.5381 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry Enrico, but you are wrong. Trenitalia is not trying to force people to do anything. Regional services are subsidized by regions and long distance Intercity trains are subsidized by the central government. Subsidized services are not a cash cow for Trenitalia, but they are a good and stable source of revenues not fully dependent on the number of tickets sold (you think you pay the full cost of taking you around on those trains? I hope not!). The last national contract concerning Intercity trains was signed in 2017 (Mr. DelRio santo subito) and Rome paid 100 billions a year to increase by 47% the number of long distance trains. Plus 300 billions to buy new trains before 2026. That's the reason you think Trenitalia is "reinforcing" the Intercity train system, but the truth is different and simple: you get the services that Italian taxpayers pay for. Nothing more and nothing less. The Sicilian regional service su**s because Sicilians are poor and their politicians are good for nothing. Electing as Regional governor the owner of the biggest, private Sicilian bus company didn't help the regional train service... but that's the outcome of the great Autonomy Sicilians obtained in 1945: rich politicians, poor people and no mistake goes unpunished.

Great video as always! Also, I believe those coaches are modernized Finish coaches, they look very similar to traditional ones from Finland. Also, I think in order to lock that one bathroom, you have to twist the handle like a handbrake on a train carriage.

10 o’clock at night, they probably expect most people to be asleep. (Good to know: in the other video riding into Sicily, he found that that cafe is cash only).

I used to drive tour coaches around Europe and it was very rare to find roadside service stations in Italy with proper toilet seats :-) Always a '3 card monte' scam going on outside though :-)

Hey Dylan great vid as usual. When possible, it would be awesome if when you had the choice to let us know what side of the train is best example like for scenery etc. i understand there are times- especially the sleeper cars you may not have a choice. And- that price was fantastic. Thanks again for some great content. Looking forward to more.

That looked like a great trip... Didn't that sleeper not have air conditioning going down there also? Thank you for sharing this video with us ...:):):)

Gorgeous scenery along the Sicilian coastline. I can imagine that setting up food service might be challenging. Maybe a diner between Palermo and Messina? Even so, with a 21:55 ferry, not much time to let people eat. Maybe an all-night cafe-bar? There used to be such amenities in early Amtrak between NY and Chicago. At a minimum, maybe keep the ferry snack bar open. In all your reviews, I'm struck by the fact that the design of the train itself - whether traditional or sleek super-modern, usually doesn't rate much comment. Much more about cleanliness, adequacy of facilities, and reliability. That reinforces my own sense that people ride trains for comfort and convenience, and don't much care about the outside appearance beyond seeing something freshly painted and generally well-maintained.

As always, I really enjoyed this video. The scenery is spectacular, I catch myself wondering what it would be like living there. But, as a WWII history buff, a lot of the town and city names give me a little shiver. What happened in those places was not pleasant.

I remember taking the train from Rome to Brindisi and having to stand the whole trip because draftee's had free tickets and they would overwhelm the train and take all the seats of the paying travellers.

Yours was a great trip, but I've seen another that had mixed reviews. As I recall, the complaints were not just lack of food and drink but also being left in the hot sun with no a/c for an extended period awaiting the ferry. Regardless, no one should complain about the views!

Heya, I just did the opposite leg of the journey (Rome-Palermo) last week, though in the Deluxe sleeper. :) I had mentally prepared myself to being in an oven, but it was surprisingly alright! I guess that's owed to the fact that the journey started at night, and the crossing (when the AC is not active) was in the morning. What I find interesting is that my deluxe cabin looked different to the ones in your train. Yours only feature the three beds, while mine additionally had a seat which I could use during daytime! Found one video where these coaches are reviewed: watch?v=zCkqm6UKt_Q Overall the experience was nice and I'd do it again! (though I'd probably try out the couchette then... :D )

I had no idea that there was even such a thing as a train ferry. Interesting. Enjoyed it. Last time that I was in Rome was 1974 and 1976 after we docked at Naples with the US Navy. Communist symbols everywhere. We were told to be careful

Ay Diós mio, you missed some of the best scenery by heading to the toilets exactly when the train was approaching Cefalu', the most picturesque city on the northern coast. For those who are planning this trip I'd suggest taking a daylight train to Messina and board this one there.
