What might be interesting is that ÖBB ordered a whole lot of new sleeper trains. The first ones are supposed to start service in 2022 and they will offer more comfort (also free WiFi) and a more mondern design. In couchette cars there will also be mini suites for one person so that you can have more privacy even if you're on budget.

Yes, I am looking forward to those very much. I think especially those 1 person chouchette "boxes" look very interesting. The privacy of the deluxe option with the space you really need at a fraction of the cost and WIFI is just something such an overnight service really should have as well.

Pretty interesting, not only because the current cars are very old, but I think that travellers are now re-discovering train travel across Europe when air travel may be more restricted or more expensive in the future. If international railway operators once again focus on providing more luxury travel, getting there in comfort instead of getting there fast, they may find a good niche market in tourists who aren't constrained on time. Those MiniSuites remind me of Japanese capsule hotel rooms, not a lot of space but good privacy.

We went from Koeln to Innsbruck via OBB sleeper in January - we compromised and took a regular sleeper, with loo and shower (very good) at the end of the corridor, which for one night is acceptable. It was lovely - and they gave us a superb goody bag, which you seem to have missed out on, containing a towel, slippers, fizzy wine, a pen, water, and a muffin or similar. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and slept incredibly well. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

I took an overnight trip on NightJet from Berlin to Vienna about a year ago. I also had the deluxe cabin, that was the first time i've ever showered on a train. Certainly an experience. I think my cabin maybe wasn't a connecting one as I had a nice sized table where you had the fold out seat. My only complaints were no WiFi on that train either, and I had to wake up the car attendant to turn my room to night service. Really a great way to get from one place to another well rested. As usual, a great video!

Well done Dylan. I was blessed to have been at the St. Lucia station dozens of times during the couple of years I served in Vicenza, Italy with the US Army. We traveled to Venice often on weekends and I enjoyed the train rides and tooling around the canals on their water buses. It looks like the station is larger than I remember but then that was 30 years ago. Keep up the good work and God bless.

I really like your reports; they're always very professional and informative and they give me serious wanderlust. If you'll excuse me one single moment of nit-picking though, in the absolute best spirit - a room on a night train is always a compartment, never a cabin.

My dear young friend, thank you for another great video. We who, above all, love to travel by train, believe that we are all thrilled with this journey, for which we rarely have the opportunity, at least in Europe, to enjoy all-night trains. OBB is one of the remaining railways that have continued to nurture travel during the night and the trains available to us are, in my opinion, relatively good, and according to OBB's announcements, new cars are being prepared that will be really top quality from an aesthetic, but also aspect of comfort. The first thing that caught my eye was the price, which is extremely high and I must admit that I'm not surprised, because it has always been like that. You are dear Dylan from the UK, where, as far as I know, it means that when a person travels alone, he uses a single compartment at a reasonably high price, certainly significantly lower than the one you paid for, because you were not ready to be in the same room with a possible unknown passenger. For all of us who live in continental Europe, I believe, it goes without saying that if we are alone on the road, we share a room on a overnight train with someone we have never met before; I'm used to it and I wouldn't be willing to pay such a high price to be alone in a compartment, but it's really just a cultural specificity that is neither better nor worse than the one present on the island and in the USA. In the end, it doesn’t even matter, you had the budget to be able to afford it and as I see in the video, it seems to me that you enjoyed traveling to SW OBB NJ. In this regard, I remember that, when I was much younger, I often changed the berth just before the train left the station, directly to the attendant so that there was company in the compartment that would be better understood during the night even though it was not known before. Then there were many more night trains and much more travel at night on almost all routes 400+ km. I don't know if the question is indiscreet, but I would be interested to hear your opinion on why it is less common today for young people to meet while waiting for a train (or ferry) and travel together whenever there are preconditions. I apologize for the story, I signed up in the hope that I would not tire anyone with the amount of text. I really enjoyed the video and in so much text I only touched on some issues that could be discussed, of course, with great pleasure. One thing people should consider when looking at the price of a sleeper train ticket. Don't compare it to the cost of transportation to your destination, but to the cost of the transportation + hotel room. Prices may seem a bit high, but turn out to be a lot more reasonable when viewed in this light.

I paid only EUR69 for a sleeper cabin (with sink only) from Wien to Venezia, had the entire cabin to myself too. I tried the couchette on my way back at EUR59 and shared the cabin with another passenger, which was a nice experience as well. That being said it was during winter so I guess it was off peak pricing.

Dylan: very good work on this video. For one thing, I would have left that window open! Fresh air is always good. But it's rare to see a train with a window vent!! I wish amtrak would do that in their sleeper cars. Another point is: given that it's the pandemic, you should have pointed out to your room attendant that there was rubbish in the room. They would be responsible to notify housekeeping of their duties in the future. (someone would lose their job over this). However, most people in today's world would want to travel in a sleeper room overnight if it has an en suite. You were very much safe and secure and can take the mask off. Having a door with double locks? Bonus awesome! Safe travels!!

"someone would lose their job over this" is such an American thing to say. Here, we do have basic job protection. Although I do aggree that it is under no circumstance acceptable to find rubbish from former travellers.

However, given that it's the pandemic situation in the world, I've been made aware that in some places (hotels, buses, trains, etc) that trash (rubbish) can't be left behind for NO REASON WHATSOEVER. In some places, you can be fired for it on the spot. Unless you are lucky enough to be in a union, earning a write-up or a strike can be pretty costly on your job record. So in truth, we're all trying to be safe these days. Cleaning persons are on the front lines and while yes they are human too with mistakes. But anything left behind can make a video go viral quick and it'll get noticed fast. Especially like OBB. I can imagine right now in the OBB offices "What? Trash (rubbish) on our train in a sleeper cabin?? CALL HR!! I want to question who was assigned to be cleaning duty!" And you can imagine a new work ethic policy will go right out today!

@@sherlocksteve9109 The ÖBB won't do anything you just said. I'm sorry, but that's not how it works. There's no way such a decision could be made in that short amount of time. Beaurocracy is real. Also, no ÖBB HQ can't see who was on cleaning duty, as we have something called data protection. All they can do is write a complaint to the cleaning company. And to add to that leaving 2 empty plastic bottles behind is no valid reason for firing someone, who already is underpaid. You won't be finding a replacement and training them that soon. The cleaning person will probably just think: I'm not getting paid enough to crawl up to get that plastic bottle.

@@austrianbugfinder Actually in the USA it takes a lot to get fired from a job. You get a complaint write up which goes in your personnel file. Then, there's a quarterly review with your supervisor who looks at your whole performance. The USA has strict personnel rules that have to be followed or the company can be sued.

Good review. Interesting that I viewed Nonstop Eurotrip's review of this same train just before yours. He did it in Aprli 2020 and rode in a couchette. OBB drops amenities in the five months to your trip. He agreed on the quality of service and the trip.

I loved the video, as always. I was kind of surprised at how narrow the hallways seemed, but if the space was used for the seating/rooms, I realize that's a compromise. I must confess that having watched the walk-around segment, I had chuckled at the Poland trip report when you were opening all the doors with a coffee cup in hand, but not this time!

OeBB currently have 13 rakes of 7 coaches on order from Siemens based on the new Railjet coaches (with a further 20 rakes shortly to be ordered) for Nightjet services. These will probably come with wi-fi.

If you're on a really tight budget you can also get a seat in one of the coaches, the seats can actually be folded almost flat and sleeping is somewhat possible. I did this from Frankfurt to Hamburg, 24€ one way.

Very nice and good trip report (as always). But I wanna mention that ÖBB is operating the NJ-service with partners. An that's a reason for the (high) price. Yes, it is expensive, but it is necessary to note, that it is a huge organisation. As long as the train is in Austria, there is an austrian train driver, but in Italy for example there are two Italian train drivers, because in Italy you have to speak Italien and due to the laws there have to be two of them. And the train crew is from Newrest. And they are responsible for preparing the food, catering, to help the passengers, but also for the cleaning. Furthermore ÖBB is the biggest operator of Night-trains and without them a lot of connections woudn't be in service anymore. And finally the Wifi. ÖBB ordered new NJ, which will be in service in the beginning of 2023. The existing trains are retrofitted with Wifi over the years.

I took the night jet once from Berlin to Basel in a more modern double deck car. The upper deck with en suite bathroom is much better than this one but similar price. Keep in mind that you save one hotel night and you avoid the stress of catching a plane with all the check-in procedures, luggage carousel, possibly pilfered luggage, getting to and from airports, sitting around waiting, no individual service on demand, no interesting views of where you actually travel etc. For me a private shower is a must, especially in summer 🙃

I‘m surprised you didn’t get an amenity kit. Typically sleeping cabin passengers on the ÖBB nightjet recieve a free bottle of sparkling wine, snacks, ear plugs, slippers, refreshment wipes and another bottle of water for free. Maybe the delay hindered them providing the whole package including to forget to clean the upper storage area?

For the same reason the daytime EuroCity trains from Austria to Italy currently have no restaurant, and on the railjet the restaurant is only serviced within Austria.

So true , I have had to sleep with 3 others ( strangers) in a couchette , one was a refugee , the refugee was arrested by Swiss Police . In Italy it is co -ed , in the couchettes , I know of a Chinese girl that was being harassed by a man from Africa , the couchettes can be brutal .The bottom line , is spend more and get a private room with a shower , oh a shower in Europe , what a great commodity.

14:00 Anyway, you can buy something from the conductor on the sleeper car. Even if you are travelling in Couchette or Seating Car. If you are travelling in Couchette, breakfast is even served. In Seating Car, it isn't, but you can buy it for 5€

The coaches/rooms look a bit different from when I took a Nightjet from Berlin to Vienna last July. The first trains (even from the existing rolling stock) should be equipped with WiFi by the end of 2020. In terms of plug sockets: I guess the issue is just that these coaches are a bit aged and the need for plug sockets wasn‘t that big some time ago. Hopefully the new trains will have more of them. Fortunately, the Nightjet I took (Single Sleeper Deluxe) was very clean. Last thing to say is that this is another truly great trip report. Well done!

13:43 - the cheapest, most comfortable way to travel is to book a seating coach for yourself. You get all 6 seats to yourself for a maximum of three people. You can change the seats so you can lie down quite comfortably. Went from Vienna to udine with my wife like that for 99€ for both of us.

It gives us who wish to travel my train, who haven't before to rest a little easier and give us some know-how on what to expect when traveling by train. I want to travel from NY to CO but I'm a little uneasy about it, as I'll be doing so alone and have never traveled alone before. It's pretty intimidating. just 1 thing to mention. the information at the end about the prices should be slightly different. you had a ticket + reservation in one. depending on the ticket, you could get a discount. the prices for the couchette/sleeper are set and do not change.

The seated compartments also have their merits: the seats recline all the way to the middle so you can join them together and sleep on them. You can book a private compartment for up to 3 people starting from 100 €.

Very nice review, Dylan. It is the way to go. One way airfare is 142 Euro so one would still need to add the hotel cost to that. The train does not need a dining car with the attendant food/drink service. I would have traveled just as you did with private room. Cheers.

Railjet, Nightjet, that's how a small country can deliver good quality of international rail travel. Pragmatic, without investments of billions upon billions of euros. Austria surely set a standard other smaller countries and even big countries can learn from. Use of the first class lounge upon arrival is a nice touch to end the journey and start the new day at the destination.

OBB do run the most sleeper services with a new link coming soon from Brussles to Vienna,that would mean a lunch time departure at St Pancras then get the sleeper from Brussles,and you arrive in Vienna in less than 24 hours

Brussels-Vienna is already running twice - it started in December. It also has a Brussels-Innsbruck portion that I was planning to go on in September until the pandemic got in the way. The latter goes at the timetable change as the former goes to thrice weekly, but there will be a new Amsterdam-Vienna/Innsbruck service running daily.

I have taken this train from Rome to Vienna and there were no beds available. The train was packed and I ended up having to stay in a 6 seats compartment. I didn't manage to get any sleep, I didn't bring anything to drink as I thought it would be possible to purchase water on the train, but of course that wasn't the case. I ended having to "steal" a welcome pack for one of the bedrooms that was left around. Definetely the worse travel experience in my life and I love Austrian trains. By the time I arrived in Vienna I thought I would die 😂 nice to see thought how the bedrooms are!

Wow that sounds like one nightmare of a night! Something European sleeper trains do need is the option to purchase food on board even if it's just at seat/room.

Was hoping this was about the newer double decker nightjet trains. Their twin deluxe cabins are amazing and huge. The shower is even better, as it has a glass door, so the rest of the toilet is not getting soaked. Also love the roomy seating area those have. Are you planning on doing a video on those too?

I took this train between Rome and Munich. Also in Deluxe. Not worth the price at all, it was hard for me to sleep (ended up not sleeping at all), everything felt very cramped and it was late (I think around 80 mins delay), thank god I went for 2 hours connection time in Munich. If I would ever do this route again, I'd probably fly or choose other trains (Frecciarossa/regular EC), which would be much cheaper.

I feel sad this summer I had to do from Vienna to Venice on the nightjer and from here to Brescia on the regional trains and return. Sadly I had to cancel the trip.

Delay at departure isn't a big problem as most sleeper services has long station times during the ride, these are buffers for delays (i.e. due to constructions sites at the route/diversions, dividing trains etc.). Also, when those buffers aren't there you'd be in Vienna around 3 am instead of 8 am. The price of a single berth deluxe isn't that much when you see what you get. It is the combination of the train ride and a hotel room + breakfast. If you took a hotel room in Venice and the first train in the morning it would have costed you at least the same.

Bit of a mixed ride looking in from outside. Water pressure looked better than I've ever seen on train so huge 👏 for that. Cabin looked very average, apart from crap cleaning job which perhaps was made worse by the train being late but either way, I just expected better from the way people talk about Nightjet trains. The breakfast looked kinda disappointing, albeit he seemed happy with it, i know I would of expected much better especially for that incredibly high price. As much as I'd love most things about train service in mainland Europe, whenever I see sleeper train reviews I think we have 2 sleeper services in UK that are under appreciated and are generally far better... Still liked the look of that 🚿 tho!

Idk, I'd say this is better than the Caledonian Sleeper but the refurbished Night Riviera is pretty much the best sleeper train I've ever come across.

ÖBB bought all sleeping-cars (including the one you travelled in), the couchette cars went to various different operators: besides ÖBB nightjet, also RDC/Flixtrain/BTE, RegioJet, Wagonservice Bratislava. They got new bogies when they were modernized in 2001/2002 so they have a fairly decent ride but are still kind of old and creaky ... The other couchette cars are of three different ÖBB types built from 1981, 1991 and 2000.

That was really interesting! I'd like to visit Europe one day. Your trains are twice as fast as our trains in Australia. The carriages all seem to have steps to access them from the platform, and the aisles seem quite narrow. How is the disabled access on these trains? They don't seem to suit people in wheelchairs.

Hi, American here. When you get solo occupancy of a suite like this that fits three people, do your ticket prices go by berth or can you request/purchase solo occupancy of deluxe sleeper like this? Amtrak doesn’t do this with the only two sleeping accommodations they offer which are roommette and family bedroom, I was just curious. Love the videos, whether its and old one or a new one, they’re all amazing to watch and make me dream of travelling more outside of the US.

Another interesting trip. After a few days in Venice I liked the clean lines of S Lucia station (although I seem to remember it was very dark inside). Have you done a trip from Venice to Innsbruck during daylight (this was presumably the route of this train)? It's lovely going up through the Dolomites to the Brenner Pass and dropping down into Innsbruck.

At around 3:15 The ES64 U4 isint the workhorse thats The ES64 U2. The U2 is the most used and for nearly all services the U4 is mostly used for passenger trains

The ES64U4 (1216) is currently used for international passenger trains, the Vectron (1293) for international freight trains. The ES64U2 (1116) is not equipped for Italy, it is mostly pulling inland trains and going to Germany, Switzerland, Hungary and parts of Czech and Slovak republics (with AC electrification).
