Valuable insights here Cris. I’m preparing for my first trip ever to Mentawaii and this is by far the best content I’ve watched. Many thanks!!!

I've surfed morocco, and I reckon this board could be a good addition to a quiver over there, no doubt

Great video. I’m aiming for a trip to the Mentawais early next year and this is helpful. Another random question: I’m the exact same size, weight & build as you. It’s an endless quest to find jeans that I like. I really dig the ones you’re wearing in this vid. I’d love to know what brand, model & size they are? Thanks man 🙏🤙🏼

ahhh.. a fellow denim enthusiast. hell yah. These were Insight jeans (was a skate / surf company, not sure if it's still around). xara jeans usually fit quite well, as do Lucky brand. 30 / 32 baby!

Cris, what type of padding do you use for the rails, nose and tails of your boards? Do you any type of bubble wrap on them for extra protection? Leaving for Panama in July and wanted to know your thoughts on this.
@SurfStrengthCoach
@SurfStrengthCoach Жыл бұрын
I just line the bag with cardboard, and maybe some bubble wrap. Some people make “rail-savers” out of pool noodles or plumbing foam, but my quad board bag, with 4 boards in it, can’t accomodate all the extra width from foam. So cardboard liner on the rails / nose / tail of the board bag, and all 4 boards go in one big bubble wrap coffin

Hi Chris I'm going to the philippines siargao island. I'm bringing a 6'4 Ci-MId, 6'2 happy pin tail for a little step up, 5'11 CI Fever good wave board, and I cant decide if I should bring my 5'7 pyzel gremlin grovel board or my JS xero epoxy 5'10 everyday board. Waves are suppose to be 4 to 6 plus when we get there then drop to 2 to 3 the last couple days. Any advice or insight would be much appreciated brotha????

I need to preface this with the understanding that I've never been to the phillipines, and I don't know the gremlin or the JS everyday. It would depend on the wave quality. 2-3 foot in the Mentawais can still be completely surfed on a performance shaped board, and a groveler isn't really needed. so I guess it depends on the wave quality. is 2-3 foot weak and gutless? or does it still have some juice? a 5 10" JS everyday may be the choice if that 2-3 foot is still wonderfully powerful and fun

Hey Chris, my first Ments trip is in a month. I generally prefer to ride flatter boards.. my day to day for years now for anywhere 2-5ft has been a JS Psycho Nitro & more recently a JS Xero. Do you think I should go for something with more rocker or stick to what I’m used to?
@SurfStrengthCoach
@SurfStrengthCoach Жыл бұрын
do you ride flatter boards in really high quality surf? Or are your day to day flatter boards suited to lesser quality waves wherever you surf. Ultimately it's up to you, but it often helps surfers match a board to the wave. good quality waves have all the power and speed you need. you want a board that is designed to work with that power and speed, but that also calls into question whether or not you surf in the pocket, or out on the flats and shoulders. good waves are suited to boards with more rocker, but it also comes down to the inherent skill a surfer has, and whether he / she is surfing the board the way it's designed to.

@@SurfStrengthCoach cheers. I would say I’m working on surfing in the pocket more & more but historically my turns have been a little more on the shoulder. The waves I surf are mostly fatter point breaks & beachies but I’ve also used the same boards when it gets hollow without any issues.

Your call then buddy. Personally, I match the board to the wave and adjust my surfing accordingly. Wouldn’t drive a 4x4 on an F1 track.

Hi Cris, what about fins? Any size, rake, etc that you recommend?
@SurfStrengthCoach
@SurfStrengthCoach Жыл бұрын
it honestly depends on the board, and where someone is actually surfing on a wave face. more down the line holding and big arcing carbes... more rake. more vertical whippy turns and a bit more "looseness", get a more upright fin.

Hey man, I'm 5.3 ft do you think everyday boards should be as high as my height or a little more?
@SurfStrengthCoach
@SurfStrengthCoach Жыл бұрын
Board choice should be more about volume and what type of wave your often surfing. I’ve never really based a board off my height, and generally make choices based on wave type, board shape that is suitable for that wave, and then volume.

What r your thoughts on the famous hypto krypto for Indo, Chris?
@SurfStrengthCoach
@SurfStrengthCoach 11 ай бұрын
We tell our coaching camp guests that it is ABSOLUTELY NOT an ideal board for the standard of mentawais waves. This now brings into question what caliber of surfer, and what caliber of wave are they surfing. There are for sure waves in the Ments / indo that a hypto would be good for. But if you’re chasing high quality surf, absolutely not. Simply look at the outline and rocker and it’s fairly obvious IMO
