Jennifer, in March of 2021 I started Intermittent Fasting (Tine Controlled Eating.). I was so inspired by you. I didn't have much weight to lose, just a few pounds, really, but this plan made sense to me as something I could easily do. I live alone, so that helps. I do have dinner with my kids once a week, and on that day I just eat normally without a time limit. As you have said, I feel that I just want to eat more high quality meals, without snacking, and not obsessing over food. I love how it makes me feel. I sleep better and have so much more energy. I have lost most of my sugar cravings too - a BIG thing for me. Thank you and Dr. Tae for so much good information in a relaxed manner. Not guilt inducing, no talk of "Bad" foods or guilt. It didn't take me that long to adjust. I do a 16/8 schedule. I so appreciate your making this information available.

Very informative. The part about when your stomach starts growling/hurting is because hormones are telling you, hey I ate yesterday at this time, not necessarily hungry. Also the portion size with the fist and deck of cards. This will be helpful. Thank you for having Dr. Patty Tae back on your channel!

Tip for not snacking/over eating after dinner is to put on teeth whitening strips. Your hunger reminders should subside by the time the strips are ready to be taken off. Helps to avoid overeating and gives you whiter teeth ✅

There was a study done on females who live with males like spouses, brothers, roomates, etc. They found that when the female was cooking and serving all the food, they would give equal portions to themselves and the male. And that is a big reason why women in long term domestic relationships with men tend to gain so much wieight over the years.

Ding ding ding!!! My husband has an insane appetite. His metabolism is just crazy, fast so he eats massive portions. It really did psychologically change my view of "normal" portions by living with him, and I did put on a lot of weight when we were first married. (That was part of it, although there was also a hormonal component to my overeating as well). Now, I give myself smaller portions and sometimes I can't even finish those hahahaha.

This was very helpful. I have lost 55lbs using Trim healthy mama eating , which changes up fuels, and spaces eating every 3-4 hours. It was something that finally worked for me, as I kept gaining, even though limiting calories more and more. Now I have stalled, and i think being mindful of portions will be helpful. We recently bought some beautiful vintage, blue and white plates, and i do find their size better for this.

Every time you post a new IF video, I get so excited to update my progress. I started IF on September 13, 2021 after I watched your results video. You inspired me to give it a try. I've tried every diet you can imagine to try to lose weight, but none of them worked for me long term because they were too restrictive. With intermittent fasting, I've lost 32.5 lbs so far. I'm amazed! I haven't been at this weight in over 6 years. I feel so much better. My clothes are getting baggy on me, and I'm reaching for things I haven't been able to wear in years. I am so close to my first weight loss goal. Only 5.6 lbs to go :) I still have a long way to go to hit my dream goal weight, but I am confident that I will eventually get there. Thank you so much for bringing awareness to this amazing way of eating. It has changed my life, healed my horrible relationship with food, and has shown me that I can achieve my goals. Happy New Year Jennifer! This was VERY informative!!! I have been dabbling in IF for about eight months. At first, the idea of not eating breakfast as soon as I got up was horrifying. But after trying it, I started to try longer and longer and now I can function normally without eating breakfast. Likewise, no snacks after dinner seemed impossible, but now, I never eat anything after about 7pm. Essentially it is HABITS that stand in our way. Once you make new habits, everything is super easy. I feel great and look great!! And I am not sacrificing or saying NO to any food or counting calories.

How do you figure out portions for plant based eating. I don’t often have a separate protein portion. It’s usually a legume that is mixed in with complex carbs like a grain.

My husband has taken over the cooking in our home due to not working for past 9 months. He enjoys it and I have struggled with his choice of meals and our new food budget. Theres lots of pasta and casseroles with not much veg. They are the types of meals where the protein is not served separate but it's all mixed together. I dont want to be too demanding re what he serves up but did ask for more veg. He bought small packets of frozen veg for me which was a great idea. I can have a bit of pasta or casserole and then just microwave some veggies to have with it. It keeps us all happy as we go through a bit of a stressfull time. I love your dont overthink it attitude to food Jennifer and this discussion was so relaxed and helpful. Eating should be enjoyable and a good communal experience, not a set of rules and maths calculations. At work they've told us to eat our lunch in our cars now. It's the saddest thing. No joy in that.

I really enjoyed this interview with Dr Tae. I enjoy all your videos on Intermittent Fasting and what you eat in a day. I think we are all overeating on the pizza but I think part of that is because we see the pizza as the whole meal. When we get Pizza, that is what we have. We don't count it as the carb portion or bread portion of our meal and then add more protein and a salad. Interesting.

Dr. Tae, you are wealth of sound advice & thank you for clarifying that you are a generalist, not a specialist! Just as an alternative to trying out expensive meal services, you can also look at purchasing "portion control plates". They are a less expensive starting point for figuring out portions and you can reuse them indefinitely (along with your fist and palm😉)!♥️🇨🇦

I inadvertently began following an intermittent fasting regime in March of 2021 when I told my friend that although I didn't feel inclined to diet, I guess I could at least stop eating anything in the evening after supper. I had no idea that I would be following your lead, as I hadn't at that time watched any of your videos on the subject. So far I have lost 49 pounds! I have only three rules- keep the serving sizes true, no seconds, and of course nothing after supper. Two things- the night time craving was really bad and only just now going away, and I have my last meal at 6p.m. and my morning meal may be at 9a.m. A question, have you stopped losing? How? Thanks a lot- Mrs. G

Once I started doing a flexible 14/10 or 16/8 IF my sleep has improved so so much. And I really really appreciate that the LARGEST portion Dr. Tae showed was comprised of VEGGIES! As for portion sizes I use a food scale and that works so well for me because I grew up overweight and was not educated on healthy portion sizes. While the food scale helped so much to re-train my brain and it worked super well for me that I do understand that it can be triggering for certain people so it's not for everyone.

One of the ways that I control portion sizes is using vintage dinner plates. I have a vintage set of dishes from the 1950s. The difference between a modern dinner plate and a 1950s plate is kind of mind -blowing! We rarely eat out & if we do it’s usually just a chick fil a drive through. lol I either get the kids meal or split a salad with my daughter. Our kid’s meals today are the average portion size of the 1950s at a restaurant for an adult.

What about eating according to calorie density? Studies have shown that eating foods that have the lowest calorie density first and filling up on those automatically. Makes you consume less of the more calorie dense foods. By doing this you are also consuming a much higher levels of antioxidant rich foods which is not only helpful in weight loss but in preventing disease.

It’s important to have a healthy balanced view on the subject of weight. Many women end up messed up because of the over emphasis on the topic of weight. I believe fasting is a good topic but not to emphasize it. Keeping it in its place is very important. Some people are starving in the world for lack of food. Others are starving themselves because of their low self image. Personally I find some curves very beautiful. ❤️

Love using our own body proportions and a divided plate to inform our food portions. No need for a food scale or measuring cups. Also, migrating motor complex (MMC) is the name for when the stomach growls. The movement in our digestive system pushes undigested matter through to the intestines, cleaning out the stomach. This increases good gut bacteria and removes things that would cause bloating. MMC can only occur if someone has not eaten for four hours or longer. People who constantly snack do not experience MMC. This is another reason why time-restricted eating or Intermittent fasting is so beneficial for our health.

I've not had much luck with time restricted eating yet, but I have been able to learn to eat smaller portions and find the benefits of that go beyond just losing a little extra weight (like less bloating and energy slumps). I also started a new habit of eating a kid's meal when we go to the Ikea restaurant, it's basically 4 meatballs, 1 scoop of mashed potato and whatever veg they have, and surprisingly it doesn't feel like too little, also leaves a little room for some dessert :)

My meals are very low carb no rice no pata no sugar no cereal,....etc fruits are rare orange or apple

I recently saw a post that said for women who have a significant amount of weight due to menopause or hormonal balance they should have a 5 hour eating window. This seems extreme and really unhealthy

I watched while on the treadmill. I tend to cheat with beverages in the evening but I’m really encouraged to be more careful about that. Now: off to enjoy some homemade yogurt after my workout. I was inspired by one of your videos to ask for a yogurt maker for Christmas! :)

If people ate the portions advised here, they wouldn't need intermittent fasting.

Thank you for this video. It's so helpful to visualize the portion sizes. I have been intermittent fasting for about a year and plan to continue this way of life indefinitely also. I feel so much better! One area I would like to see addressed though is for people who are allergic to dairy/gluten as far as altering the other food groups to compensate. Thank you for your channel. I enjoy all your videos!

Hi Jennifer, I enjoyed hearing what Dr. Tae had to say about portion sizes and diet in general. My husband's hand is much bigger than mine and so portion sizes should be adjusted accordingly. This video was so helpful. Thanks so much! xoxo, Karen

No mention was made in this about desserts. How and when do you fit them in. I do know from previous videos that you had tea and dessert in the afternoons. Do you still do this and is it included in the above talk? Thank you very much.

I, too, am very curious about how tea time desserts are included with no mention of calories even though Dr. Tae had daily calorie totals which seemed to be assuming only three meals per day since she was showing a plate with three divisions.

Thank you for the conversation you two! I’ve been attempting intermittent fasting for a month now and this explained A LOT! My portions have been too generous- and I’ve noticed now the “hunger pains” reminding me at odd hours the day after I “gave in” or “cheated” during the off hours. The mindset on the hunger pains makes a lot of sense and I think will help a lot. And funny enough- I’m excited to scarf down more veggies! Gonna miss the vasts amount of bread, rice and noodles though… 😜 How bad is butter for the diet?

If you do some updated research on fat, I think you’ll find that wholesome forms of natural fat are totally healthy for you. Fat doesn’t make you fat and it’s not bad for you. It’s a macronutrient that we need and gives us fuel just like carbs and protein. The key is to eat natural forms and always load up on the veggies so you aren’t overdoing then fat, carbs, or protein!

Our grocery store HEB has healthy meals with more normal portion sizes. Calculating calories, points, etc makes me stressed, and stress does NOTHING good for my weight loss. I do realize that my portion sizing is the problem. I already dealt with snacking, faux food, sugar, etc.

You're going to get much better nutrition advice from someone with RDN certification (Registered Dietician Nutritionist). Doctors get very very little training on nutrition, and the US government was heavily influenced by food company funded studies, and some really random factors. Though Dr Tae was very enjoyable.

I do not think fasting was covered in enough detail. Does time restricted fasting or eating move metabolic markers? Keto- is it healthy in regards to blood sugar levels? What is the effects on the liver and kidneys? Your metabolic rate is influenced by many factors - including age, gender, muscle-to-fat ratio, amount of physical activity and hormone function.

I think it’s important to remember that your carb portion does not have to be grains (grains can tend to make me feel bloated so I don’t eat them every night). Your carb portion could be a higher carb veggie like potatoes, sweet potatoes, or something to that effect. Also, a doctor I used to work for would always remind us medical assistants to eat some amount of healthy fat with our meals to keep us satiated. She recommended avocado or butter.

Wondering about the grain measurement. Dr. Tae says 1 c. or 2 oz. is the daily recommendation, but the chart says 6 oz. So, according to the chart, three cups is the daily amount. That is excessive. I’m guessing she recommends 2 oz.

I would absolutely love Dr. Tae’s advice on picky kids. My daughter is 17 and will not eat any veg and only apples. I feel like I’ve tried every strategy I’ve just given up 😭. But I worry about her health and she is overweight. Help please, her pediatrician taking to her hasn’t been able to make any changes.
