Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern that involves regular, short-term fasts - or periods of minimal or no food consumption. Most people understand intermittent fasting as a weight loss intervention. Fasting for short periods of time helps people eat fewer calories, which may result in weight loss over time (1Trusted Source).However, intermittent fasting may also help modify risk factors for health conditions like diabetes and cardiovascular disease, such as lowering cholesterol and blood sugar levels

I lost 95 pounds this year by intermittent fasting and low carb. I also eat kosher which helps immensely. I was 225 and now around 125 to 130 at 5'2 male. The only downside is the extra skin lol but hoping it will shrink eventually. I did absolutely no exercise as I am disabled.

Dr. Mike, I love aIl of your drawings, I’ve taught anatomy/physiology for 23 years, biochemistry one of my favorite courses. In teaching I used the mind maps that you draw as assignments for my students. I’ve been using IF for a few months, 16/8, and I’m exercising at high intensity at least 3 times per week and I count calories and eat more low carb. I’ve lost 30 pounds in 10 months, was 230 lb at the start. Thanks for the science, that energizes me that I’m on the right track!😁

I’m post/menopausal and decided to prove that women like me can lose weight. Not only that but I was in a bad bicycling accident and was in a wheelchair and using a walker and cane for a year. My weight crept up and I felt terrible. I decided earlier this year that I was going to lose weight no matter what. Based on a lot of info I got from this channel, I decided to avoid almost all processed foods, to do intermittent fasting, to avoid most gluten, dairy, sugar, and alcohol, and to focus on a Mediterranean diet. I’m 7 months in and have lost over 55 lbs. I only have 10 left to lose. If you ever wondered if your channel had an impact, Dr Hansen, well, you’ve had a huge impact on me. ❤

I concur. Started Intermittent Fasting from 5pm to 11am. I cut out Gluten and High Fructose Corn Syrup and have already lost 27 LBS in 31 days. I am a 60-year-old male, and I was 282 LBS and am already down to 255. My goal is to get to 200 lbs. I can't wait to get up in the morning and weigh myself. Just eating normal unprocessed foods and lots of water and iced tea! Easiest lifestyle change I've ever done!

Started 6 days ago and I'm down 7 pounds. 18 hour fast, 6 hour eating window. Mostly high protein and high fat. If I have refined sugar, I end up craving food so much after my blood sugar drops that I can't sustain the fast, so I accidentally became keto out of necessity. Beef, pork, bacon, butter, eggs, carrots, mixed nuts, and plant based protein shakes. That's pretty much it. I ate 3x a day on days 1-3, only 2x per day on 4-5, on day 6 I only ate once. My body is craving less food and I become full much sooner. Salt and squeezed lemon help any cravings. Other than that, I'm walking 3-5 miles on the treadmill at a pace that makes me work and I'm doing body weight exercises. I've got 13 more pounds up lose until I'm back to my ideal weight.

Lost 45lbs in 6 months. Key for me was completely cutting out sugar and severely restricting carbs, plus a 5k walk every day. That’s all it took. Diet changes did away with food cravings and I found I naturally ate less with less frequency such that I am approaching reduced eating windows. Such simple changes have had a profound effect, and in the end were not all that difficult to make. 20lbs to go, which now feels achievable! Enjoy your vids, they in large part inspired me to act.

Managing to keep my BMI 23.5 for about a year now , am wanting to get below 37.4 waist , so annoying it just won't reduce , probably too many handfuls of raw walnuts per day , the bitter taste of them seems to help etc Am giving intermittent fasting a try now , just a few days in now , hope to stay on it for life to preserve pancreas.

Dr. Mike Hansen explains here an amazing story of significant weight loss and the science behind it: 1. intermittent fasting (16:8 - 8 hour eating window) 2, eat unprocessed food 3. exercise (a five mile walk and high-intensity interval training) Any one of the above is good, any two will have a synergistic effect, and doing all three puts one at fat burning level 10. No meds, pills, supplement, fad diets, or calorie counting. Intermittent fasting works via AMPK. Exercise and ketones rev up AMPK. Ketones happen via intermittent fasting and a very low carb diet. The ketone beta hydroxy butyrate tells the liver mitochondria to make sirtuin-1 when then activates AMPK and inhibits MTOR. When you are constantly eating, especially simple carbs, you are not allowing your AMPK to turn on for a long enough time. Same thing if you are not exercising. mTOR determines if a cell will grow, remain stable, or die. mTOR is highly dependent on AMPK. When the AMPK switch is turned on, meaning your mitochondria are burning fuel to make ATP, the mTOR is shut off so there is no growing. This is what happens when you exercise and also when the (glycolysis to ketosis) metabolic switch happens. The autophagy that happens during ketosis prepares the cells for optimal functioning. The sweet spot for ketosis is 16-18 hours. Insulin needs to hit rock bottom for a sustained period of time for the benefits of ketosis. Intermittent fasting promotes mitophagy via SIRT3.

Intermitten Fasting does work. I have lost 60 lbs within 2 years. However, after my 2022 Cruise vacation and family problems came after, My stress leverl went to the roof. Then, I have gained back 30lbs back. I can't complained because my BMI is still normal. My point is that I.F. works.
@Mario-forall
@Mario-forall Жыл бұрын
I.F. works for sure, but the fact you gained 30lb in a year means you have some serious mental issues, like difficulty coping with stress and emotional eating. In your case, in addition to I.F. you should try to learn some techniques to deal with stress like meditation, hypnosis, psychedelics, etc. So that you can lose the weight and keep it down. Wish you the best in your journey

I completely agree - plus I would add 5 to 10 minutes of rebounding (see health jump). Rebounding is a low impact exercise that helps your lymphatic system (which only works with body movement) to get rid of toxins (which are normally stored in fat cells to protect you)! Plus rebounding wakes you up in the morning and is also fun! I lost 80lbs with it! But Remember - all the weight will come back if you go back to your old ways! This is the best way to burn fat (I never exercised- just did 10 minutes of rebounding. The reason it works is because with low carb eating you stop insulin from spiking (when insulin is up you can’t burn fat- so any calories you don’t burn gets stored as fat!). Only when you drastically remove insulin raising foods: such as; sugar. Bread, etc. your body will be able to switch to is backup energy source: Fat! If you don’t stop eating carbs, your body will just keep storing everything you eat as fat!

I’ve lost 110 lbs by my 3-step strategy of intermittent fasting 16:8 + Portion control + Maintaining 10,000 steps a day. But when it’s too cold outside to walk, a rebounder sounds like a fun alternative.

I lost 82 pounds after a lifetime of on-and-off dieting... It took a short 2 years and I have kept it off for 7 years...I lost 13 more during Covid by walking 5 to 8 miles a day (3 to 5 outings with the dog) My best tools were realizing one, it must be a life change, two, eating less in spite of mom's rant that I must eat what other starving children are not able to have, and allowing myself to "cheat" on Saturdays if I chose to...(cheat equals reward!) Also I did not go into great detail with others that I was dieting as I think it adds guilt if we mess up and perceived judgement which could sabatoge the goal. One last thing, I was traveling 3 to 4 days a week, on average, for work and I made a pact with myself to only eat half of anything I ordered no matter how delicious. Often the wait staff was concerned that there was something wrong with the entree, and when I did not take it to go that really confused them. It would be so advantageous if we knew how the body works as described by this video, earlier in life and put these basic into our eating choices rather than eat as we always have... I still think fried chicken is meant to include mashed potatoes and gravy, a popping hot biscuits and veggies are an option....lol What an amazing machine the body is! Thank you for this and your other videos!

I stopped because I really lost my desire to eat, and I started to have side effects (? I really don’t know if they were related to IF). I’m ready to try it again because I have 20lbs to lose. I’m going to ease into it with 12-14 IF, omit cake that I’ve slid back into, and the rest of my diet is plant based and some poultry. Will this help? Is 12-14 hours of IF enough? I wish that I had been told about sugar when I was first diagnosed with NAFLD the dietitian said follow the governments food guidelines it took my decision to go sugar free and processed food free to see the astonishment on my GP’s as he said Linda your blood tests are perfect what are you doing? Sorry for the essay teacher I’d do like run on sentences and optionally using some punctuation or not. See you in the next one🍀🌟🍀👍👍👍👍👵🏻🖖🖖🖖🖖🍀🌟🍀BTW that old lady has a round face I don’t 😅

I right there with you all. For years I ate late at night and went to bed within 10-15 minutes!! New years, started using Z-quil on hard nights sleeping. Ironically got a bad tooth ache Jan 1st. Couldn’t eat. It’s been ten days, tooth ache gone, now I’m fasting. Only eat from 1pm to 8pm. I don’t even crave the late night food anymore. Basically just wanted to say…I think my case was in my mind. Broke the habit…thank you cavity!!!

As someone who is fit and healthy I only engage in IF if I pigout and overeat and need to regain insulin sensitivity quickly. I still place a much greater emphasis on exercises than if. Because if oxygen is not available at end of electron transport chain cell necrose and initiate inflammation cascade. Sometimes I will fast just before exercise even if I am hungry. I know once I start to exercise my body will turn on "fight or flight" and temporary turn off "rest and digest". Once I finish my insulin sensitivity will increase and I just need to be careful not to overeat.

Fasting really has helped me so much. i was 170lbs before lock down, the ballooned to something like 186. Now i am 155lbs.

Do you think it makes a deference working out in the early hours in the morning or In The evenings? I tend to feel very tired in the mornings and more energized at night. However, in my 20s and 30s I was a morning person and worked out earlier in the day without having to do IF or any type of restricting diet. When I hit 40 it’s when things went to hell, I gained weight even by just eating lettuce 🥬 so I can try IF again but I tend to quit during the weekends 😅 and begin eating small amounts but more often 😢 I’m 45 and have had a very difficult time losing weight 😢

The reason it worked for her was because she was in a calorie deficit. I use intermittent fasting too, i eat intuitively and i guesstimate calories. You can eat “healthy” and still gain weight again it’s all about calories you don’t necessarily need to count but you do need to be in a deficit I lost 100 pounds eating out (fast food) and i even checked my blood markers Everything has improved drastically Follow whatever diet and or eating window that allows you to be in a deficit

IF works alone but if you combine keto, carnivore, or ketovore (KZbin has videos on all), you potentially achieve better/quicker results. I lost 50 lbs in 8 months eating just 3 sensible meals a day, staying as close to keto as possible to stay sane 😂…greatly reducing my bad carbs (only eating processed foods, white bread, and sugar occasionally). This was before IF became popular and not knowing, I was basically doing a 16/8 or 12/12 window . I did Leslie Sansome 45 minute walk at home videos during week days.

THIS DOES NOT WORK FOR WEIGHT LOSS. I have been adhering to IF strictly since 1 January. 8 weeks. I have only water between 7 pm and at the very earliest 9 am, usually later. In addition to that, every week I fast from 7 pm on Wednesday evening to about 10 or 11 on. a Friday morning. That’s a minimum of a 36 hour fast every week (usually about 40 hours) on top of the restricted times every other day. General diet: I don’t eat or drink anything with sugar in. No desserts, cakes biscuits sweets, fizzy drinks fruit juice, nothing like that. I do eat a lot of raw fruit. I only very rarely drink alcohol, maybe a glass of wine every few weeks. I don’t eat snack foods or junk food, no burgers or pizza or anything like that. No fried food. Not much bread, whole grain only, and I don’t eat butter or any spreads. I snack on almonds, walnuts, raisins, fruit. I do eat meat but not a great deal. I don’t restrict calories at the moment but I keep an eye on quantity. Activity: I’m usually fairly active in the form of brisk walking (8000 steps a day at 3.5 mph or faster) though that has dropped off the last few weeks for various reasons. RESULT: after 8 weeks of a weekly 36-hour fast and time-restricted eating on every other day and a healthy diet, I have NOT LOST WEIGHT, in fact I’ve gained a kilo. On the plus side, I would definitely say that as a sufferer of episodes of colitis I’ve seen marked improvement in day-to-day bowel function. But no sign of weight loss.
